| timtog04-14-05, 01:03 AM | If a cleric doesn't have a specific deity (i.e., they are just "good" aligned as specified in the PHB), can they take the war domain? If so, would they forfeit the weapon proficiency and specialization granted by the domain, since there isn't a "deity's preferred weapon"? If they still get the benefit, what weapons are available? I thought I saw a rule for this once, but now I think I was reading the description of "spiritual weapon". HELP! thanks |
| Endarire04-14-05, 01:16 AM | I know of rules in Defenders of the Faith, but those changed in Complete Divine. See CD 188. -EE |
| pres_man04-14-05, 01:18 AM | I thought I saw a rule for this once, but now I think I was reading the description of "spiritual weapon". Really this is a question for the DM of the game, as some DMs don't even allow clerics to go deity-less. As for a (slightly) more legal answer, then you were actually on track with spiritual weapon from most discussions I've seen. Most say the weapon takes the form of the alignment closest to them. So: Chaos: Battleaxe Evil: Light flail Good: Warhammer Law: Longsword If your say Lawful Good, then again it probably depends on your DM. Most DMs will let the PC choose which one, they are more likely to be associated with, but not all DMs will do this. |
| Cold Napalm04-14-05, 04:48 AM | So what happens if they are true neutral? |
| Leap04-14-05, 05:44 AM | They use rubber bands :) |
| Leap04-14-05, 05:48 AM | For deity-less weapon choice i'd go with weapons that most suit the alignment: Chaotic - has to be flexible in use, so choose a wilderness tool weapon (shortbow, spear, axe, machette) Lawful - should suit a specialist role in a group (halberd, longbow, shortsword) Evil - should be well wicked (scourge, dagger, greatsword) Good - should be something that can be used non-lethal (mace, staff, hammer) well thats my opinoin anyway :) |
| quaiven04-14-05, 06:47 AM | Spiritual Weapon Evocation [Force] Level: Clr 2, War 2 Components: V, S, DF Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level) Effect: Magic weapon of force Duration: 1 round/level (D) Saving Throw: None Spell Resistance: Yes A weapon made of pure force springs into existence and attacks opponents at a distance, as you direct it, dealing 1d8 force damage per hit, +1 point per three caster levels (maximum +5 at 15th level). The weapon takes the shape of a weapon favored by your deity or a weapon with some spiritual significance or symbolism to you (see below) and has the same threat range and critical multipliers as a real weapon of its form. It strikes the opponent you designate, starting with one attack in the round the spell is cast and continuing each round thereafter on your turn. It uses your base attack bonus (possibly allowing it multiple attacks per round in subsequent rounds) plus your Wisdom modifier as its attack bonus. It strikes as a spell, not as a weapon, so, for example, it can damage creatures that have damage reduction. As a force effect, it can strike incorporeal creatures without the normal miss chance associated with incorporeality. The weapon always strikes from your direction. It does not get a flanking bonus or help a combatant get one. Your feats or combat actions do not affect the weapon. If the weapon goes beyond the spell range, if it goes out of your sight, or if you are not directing it, the weapon returns to you and hovers. Each round after the first, you can use a move action to redirect the weapon to a new target. If you do not, the weapon continues to attack the previous round’s target. On any round that the weapon switches targets, it gets one attack. Subsequent rounds of attacking that target allow the weapon to make multiple attacks if your base attack bonus would allow it to. Even if the spiritual weapon is a ranged weapon, use the spell’s range, not the weapon’s normal range increment, and switching targets still is a move action. A spiritual weapon cannot be attacked or harmed by physical attacks, but dispel magic, disintegrate, a sphere of annihilation, or a rod of cancellation affects it. A spiritual weapon’s AC against touch attacks is 12 (10 + size bonus for Tiny object). If an attacked creature has spell resistance, you make a caster level check (1d20 + caster level) against that spell resistance the first time the spiritual weapon strikes it. If the weapon is successfully resisted, the spell is dispelled. If not, the weapon has its normal full effect on that creature for the duration of the spell. The weapon that you get is often a force replica of your deity’s own personal weapon. A cleric without a deity gets a weapon based on his alignment. A neutral cleric without a deity can create a spiritual weapon of any alignment, provided he is acting at least generally in accord with that alignment at the time. The weapons associated with each alignment are as follows. Chaos: Battleaxe Evil: Light flail Good: Warhammer Law: Longsword, Note, personally I don't allow godless clerics. But presuming your DM allows it, I would say that a true neutral godless cleric should pick which way he leans (ie does he turn or rebuke?) and get the weapon from either the good or evil alignment. So a neutral cleric who turns gets longsword, if he rebukes he gets a light flail. |
| Draco Strang04-14-05, 08:45 AM | I had this come up in one of my games, and I just let the player pick any one weapon he wanted and gave him martial weapon proficiency with it. Not exactly RAW, but it kept us happy. |
| tiercel04-15-05, 09:31 PM | I'd make the player describe what philosophy he's getting his power from (note: I'd grill such a player on this extensively before considering allowing a godless cleric anyway), and see if that suggested a weapon. If he has some generic war-schtick going on, I'd probably pick whatever one of the most culturally common martial weapons would be (longsword for "standard D&D" medieval-European-style human culture, battleaxe for Viking-style culture, short sword for Roman-style culture, dwarven waraxe for generic dwarven culture, rapier or bow for generic elven culture, whatever). |
| Big Tom04-15-05, 11:36 PM | As a Dm and a player, I perfer god-less Clerics. It seems to me that a person who simply beleives in a cause and goes so far as to devote their life to them is more cleric-like than most clergy. I will admit that most of this is likely my real life issues with organized religions, which I will not go into here. As for Godless Clerics and War domain proficencies. I try to acertin exactly what weapon most fits the theme of the character, and make that the weapon. Some times its a simple weapon, so they don't get the MWP, but still get the Weap Focus, so it works out. |

| Borris04-16-05, 02:40 AM | According to Complete Divine's weapon of the deity spell, alignment weapons are as follows. Good: Warhammer Evil: Light Flail Law: Longsword Chaos: Battleaxe Neutral: Heavy Mace I hope that helps. |

| ToxicWiz04-18-05, 10:56 AM | I have a total agreement with quaiven; The weapon that you get is often a force replica of your deity’s own personal weapon. A cleric without a deity gets a weapon based on his alignment. A neutral cleric without a deity can create a spiritual weapon of any alignment, provided he is acting at least generally in accord with that alignment at the time. The weapons associated with each alignment are as follows. Chaos: Battleaxe Evil: Light flail Good: Warhammer Law: Longsword, that says it all (in my opinion) and the rest is also in his post about nuturals :D |
| Thuragrun04-18-05, 11:44 AM | I would not allow a godless cleric but if I did, I would allow any weapon the cleric chooses but not an exotic weapon. |
