| acarpenter11-18-07, 02:09 PM | I can't find the chart in the PHB that shows how many starting spells you get per level for a cleric? Every other class has a chart. I know how many I can use per day, but how many do I start with total???? Thanks, Alan |
| whitetrolley11-18-07, 02:13 PM | You get access to all the spells plus your domain spells. |
| DrMorganes11-18-07, 03:52 PM | To be clear: Clerics (and all other divine casters, including druids, rangers, and paladins) don't have a "spells known" mechanic. Since divine spells are granted to the cleric by some higher power (most commonly a deity), a divine caster in a sense "knows" and can prepare all the spells on his class list. Only arcane casters (wizards, sorcerers, bards, et. al.) need to worry about whether they know a spell. Of those, only wizards have the potential to learn every spell on their class list - provided, of course, that they can get their hands on a written version! |
| FarrenCronwing11-18-07, 03:55 PM | You get all spells on your list. My advice? Get every book with divine spells you can. :P Flaunt your list, and make sure that nobody suspects your antics. |
| Salla11-18-07, 04:48 PM | To be clear: Clerics (and most other divine casters, including druids, rangers, and paladins) don't have a "spells known" mechanic. Exceptions include the Favored Soul, Shugenja, and Spirit Shaman ... but there's a reason nobody ever plays those. |
| Wind of Darkness11-18-07, 11:34 PM | Exceptions include the Favored Soul, Shugenja, and Spirit Shaman ... but there's a reason nobody ever plays those. Yeah, it's called MAD. Those classes are all dependent on both CHA and WIS for their casting. Pity, really. |
| acarpenter11-19-07, 09:21 AM | Thanks for the replys. It looks like there is a lot of rules when it comes to playing a cleric. I have another questions about spell prep. The book says it takes about an hour to pray to prepare your spells. Does this account for all of my spells or do I have to pick just some to prepare? Does a cleric ever need materials for a spell? Thanks, Alan |
| Belkar11-19-07, 09:45 AM | One hour of meditation or "prayer" takes care of prepping all of your spells for that day. Keep in mind, you have to choose the exact spells from your class list to prepare each day. And you can only cast those prepared spells. (but Good clerics can convert any prepared spell to a Healing spell... so don't prepare those... ;) ) Some spells (it's in the spell description) require a clerical holy symbol. But none require material components (at such low levels... ;) ) |

| Grand_Commander1311-19-07, 12:24 PM | Thats where I am confused?? Why not just prepare them all? Or is this not possible?Like other spellcasters, a cleric can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. His base daily spell allotment is given on Table: The Cleric. In addition, he receives bonus spells per day if he has a high Wisdom score. You're restricted in your spells per day. You can prepare all of the same spell in your slots for that level, but you can still only prepare so many spells of each level every day. |
| wrecan11-19-07, 12:28 PM | Does a cleric ever need materials for a spell?Rarely. For most spells he will only need his Divine Focus (although some spells require a different focus). Here are the 34 spells in the PHB that require a cleric to use material components: Animate/Create Dead (a black onyx gem worth at least 25 gp per Hit Die of the undead) Astral Projection (A jacinth worth at least 1,000 gp, plus a silver bar worth 5 gp for each person to be affected) Atonement (Burning incense) Augury/Divination (Incense worth at least 25 gp) Bless/Curse Water (25 gp worth of silver dust) Commune (Holy/unholy water and incense) Consecrate/Desecrate (vial of holy/unholy water and 25 gp worth of silver dust) Continual Flame (ruby dust worth 50 gp) Forbiddance (holy water and rare incenses worth at least 1,500 gp, plus 1,500 gp per 60-foot cube) Freedom of Movement (A leather thong) Glyph of Warding (powdered diamond worth at least 200 gp) Hallow/Unhallow (Herbs, oils, and incense worth at least 1,000 gp, plus 1,000 gp per level of the spell to be included in the hallowed area) Raise Dead (Diamonds worth a total of least 5,000 gp) Refuge (gems worth 1,500 gp) Restoration (Diamond dust worth 100 gp) Resurrection (holy water and diamonds worth a total of at least 10,000 gp) Shield of Faith (A small parchment with a bit of holy text written upon it) Symbol of Death/Insanity/Persuasion/Stunning/Weakness (Mercury and phosphorus, plus powdered diamond and opal with a total value of at least 5,000 gp each) Symbol of Fear/Pain/Sleep (Mercury and phosphorus, plus powdered diamond and opal with a total value of at least 1,000 gp) True Resurrection (holy water and diamonds worth a total of at least 25,000 gp) True Seeing (ointment for the eyes that costs 250 gp) Undeath to Death (powder of a crushed diamond worth at least 500 gp) |

Thanks, Alan Your spells per day requires you to chose the exact spells you prepare at the start of the day. Let me toss you a sample cleric Bob is a level 1 cleric with 16 wisdom, and the domains War and Stregnth per day bob gets 3 level 0 spells 2 level 1 spells (wisdom adds one more bonus spell per day) and 1 level 1 domain spell Begining of the day bob must pray to chose his spells for his level 0 spells bob chose "virtue, guidence and Read magic" Level 1 spells he chose inflict light wounds Twice For his domain spell he chose "magic weapon" Now bob is mostly stuck with these spells for the rest of the day, he can only cast them as many times as he prepared them, with one exception, he can switch out any spell he wants for a healing spell of that level. IE he can swap Guidence for "cure minor wounds", or he can switch one of the inflict light wounds for a cure light. the switching a spell to a healing spell can be done on the fly, hence why there's no reason to prepare any healing spells. |
| Sunblast11-19-07, 01:20 PM | A quick correction... [QUOTE=acarpenter;14373902] IE he can swap Guidence for "cure minor wounds", or he can switch one of the inflict light wounds for a cure moderate. the switching a spell to a healing spell can be done on the fly, hence why there's no reason to prepare any healing spells. You typically convert spells into healing spells of the same level (You could pick one of a lower level, but never of a higher level). Cleric Bob could not swap out inflict lights wounds (a first level spell) for cure moderate wounds (a second level spell). He would get cure light wounds, not cure moderate wounds. Also, there are still clerics that can and should prepare cure spells. Anyone that channels negative energy (evil clerics and some neutral clerics) would still have to prepare their cures. |
