Does anyone know where the rules for applying poison onto your weapon are? My rogue is multiclassing into an assasin and it says that they can put poison on there weapons with no risk to themselves but I don't even know what the rules for putting poison on a weapon are in the first place.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Applying poison to a weapon is a standard action.

Normally, you have a 5% chance to accidentally poison yourself when applying the poison, and a 5% chance to accidentally poison yourself when you attack with the poisoned weapon.

The poison remains on the weapon until you hit a target or someone intentionally wipes it off or casts Neutralize Poison or somesuch.

the rule is unless you have a racial/class feature that says otherwise, there is a 5% chance that you will poison yourself becuase you messed up. it also applies to preparing any poison. additionally if you roll a natural 1 on an attack with the weapon, you must make a DC 15 reflex save or be affected by the poison. I found these rules in the 'abilities and conditions' section of the DMG. hope this helps

Okay guys thanks. Just one last thing. How much does poison cost and what exactly does it do? (I couldn't find poison in chapter 7 of the PHB)

Thats cause its not in the PHB its on page 297 of the DMG. Theirs a nice chart that shows the standard poisons, their effects, and how much they cost.

While we're on topic, does anyone know how I could find out what some of the more obscure poisons actually are? Perhaps a list of ingredients or if a type of poison is made of natural animal poison or plants?

The Complete Adventurer listing of Craft (Poisonmaking) says the materials cost less if their available locally. I don't know what would be available locally if I don't know what they're made of...yes, some of them are easy, I'm more interested in the less-than-easy ones for my question.
