I am a new D&D player, with a bit more than a months experience. My brother, who has been playing for a while, helps me with my charcters and other stuff. I am going to be in a lvl 9 adventure taking place on the high seas. I am a rog. lvl 9 focusing on archery. My brother made me pick leadership as a feat, and he wants me to make the cohort myself. There is just one problem, I have no idea what kind of cohort I want! After a while of thinking i decided on a fire domain cleric, since they can turn water creatures. I gave my cohort archery feats as well, since i plan on being able to attack and pirate other boats. As a new player, i need to know wheter, 1.) the fire domain is worthwhile, 2.) whether the archery feats are worth it, and 3.) whether the whole idea of the cleric as my cohort is a good idea. Please post suggestions!
Thank you!

Well, I take it that since you plan on pirating ships and turning water elementals you will be travelling the seas, and for the use of turning the water elementals, fire domain is good, but also remember: ships are made of wood, this may spawn some problems.
Clerics are always good to ahve around though but for the reason of being on the open seas maybe a dread pirate will prove for the better or a higher level cohort who is cleric/dread pirate.
Obad-Hai, will grant a cleric power over both fire and water, usefull when on the seas.
As for the archery feats, I have always thought they were worth it, and maybe a level or two in deepwood sniper on your rogue will help you with your attacks on islands and what not. The rogue side of you will allow you to sneak around and all that good stuff and the sniper side will kill things faster and better and allow you more knowledge of nature and the happenings on islands.
It all works together great if you are a sniper and your cohort is a cleric of Obad-Hai, because deepwood snipers would be drawn to Obad-Hai, and maybe that could be the reason you and your cohort get along so well.
Hope that helped,
Cinturon.

umm... Cint,
He's giving his Cohort the archery feats....
But, all in all it sounds like a good idea, but the fire domain could just as easily back fire on you, as it could benifit you. Take procautions, make sure your cleric wont do anything dumb, like burn your ship down and leave you all strandid in the middle of the ocean floating on the wreckage of your own ship. Mabey, since you're going to be on a ship you should pick a cohort with some sea legs, as a cohort without could prove to be very worthless. Make sure he has some expierence in the water.

I agree with drac about the "sea legs" and maybe you should consider "literall" sea legs. Lik an aqua elf or better yet a Locathah, MM page 129. The use crafts which come in handy if you give him archery feats, he can make his own arows, they are aquatic, and they are neutral. And to top it off they have blind-fight. it can be dark in the lower levels of those ships somethimes.

Why not Water Domain?? He could rebuke the water elementals, and it feets better on a boat. And also could bring the favor of the gods of the sea.

Like I said Obad-Hai, will allow you both fire and water domains, to create or destroy water elementals.
