In the PHB it states "At any one time, the cleric may command any number of undead whose total Hit Dice do not exceed his level." It also states under Animate Dead "you can control only 4 HD worth of undead creatures per caster level."

Does that mean you can command more then 1 HD worth of undead creatures per caster level as long as you use command multiple times? Or is it that you can command 1 HD worth of undead creatures per caster level? If the latter is true does that mean you can control 4 times your caster level from Animate Dead and another 1 HD per caster level worth;
for a total of 5 times your caster level?

I've always held that undead controlled via Rebuke/Control are tallied separate from Animate Dead and other undead creating spells.

I thought it explicitely stated that the undead totals were tallied seperately.
