( posted this in spells and magic but no response so I hope this is the correct location for the question as it does involve a Gm. )

In the Phb it states that when an evil ( or nuetral but rebuke-abled ) cleric rolls the effect commanded "A commanded undead creature is under the mental control of the evil cleric. The cleric must take a standard action to give mental orders to a commanded undead. At any one time, the cleric may command any number of undead whose total Hit Dice do not exceed his level. He may voluntarily relinquish command on any commanded undead creature or creatures in order to command new ones."

My question is this, what is the duration in which the undead is commanded? It strongly infers that this is a permanent state unless reliquished. I have searched the boards and only found clarification in regards to this in that your total commanded undead HD and animated undead HD are different pools and that a good cleric can break the command on a sucessfull "destroyed" turn roll. I have submitted this query to Ask Wizard but have yet to get a response, please help!

I wonder as well. But i do believe it is permanent though, just remember the HD cap is the clerics lvl.

Yes, the command undead through rebuking is quite permanent.
(Until destroyed, released, or the like)

An evil cleric typically has two undead "pools". They are effectively completely unrelated.

I use the term "command" for the rebuking/command effect, typically equal to your turning class level.

I use the term "control" for animate dead effects, typically 4 times your caster level.

WotC often uses these same terms, but mixes them up sometimes, so watch it.
