| Rathje07-28-05, 05:51 AM | Hello, all. Yesterday afternoon, I purchased Complete Adventurer, Complete Arcane, and Complete Divine. About a week ago, I got Complete Warrior. I must say, I love them. Complete Warrior was exactly what I was hoping for, Complete Arcane has some interesting feats I'd like to try out, Complete Adventurer's Scout and Spellthief jumped out and said "play me," but Complete Divine seemed a little lacking (at least in comparison with the other three). I'm not sure exactly why; I think I just put my standards too high. I was hoping for so much, since I love divine characters. That said, I was wondering what other people thought of them. Does anyone have a favorite? A least favorite? Do you dislike all four? Please tell me why, if you don't mind sharing. -Rathje |
| Temrek07-28-05, 05:54 AM | Of the complete series I have Complete Warrior (Actually I have Complete Arcane and Adventurer but I must go to the postoffice and get them first) and it is one of the best d20 accesories I have seen. |
| Pryrates07-28-05, 07:06 AM | Complete Arcane and Complete Warrior are the best in my opinion. |
| digoraccoon07-28-05, 08:29 AM | Complete Warrior is my 2nd favorite PC resource, only slightly outdone by the Miniature's Handbook (Which amazingly has a lot of neat PC options and feats too, not just for minis). These two book I have noticed my players use the most. 3rd place seems to go to Complete Arcane, and 4th to the Unearthed Arcana book (One player wanted the varient spontanious casting cleric and I agreed to it). :) |
| Ut-Napishtim07-28-05, 09:38 AM | Yeah, I have CW and CA, but CD and CA didn't stand out as having enough content I'd actually use. Normally with most supplements you only use about a third of the stuff in them, sometimes the really good ones break 50%. For CD and CA though I just didn't see anything I really wanted to use. |
| Taeldrin Laesrash07-28-05, 10:03 AM | I own CA and CV, and my friend owns CD and CW (Which I often read when I'm at his place). My favorites are easily CW and CA, for the amount of material that's actually fun and interesting. |
| LCD2YOU07-28-05, 10:08 AM | is my favorite. But then again it's upside down. The binding and the pages inside are 180 degrees out of phase with each other. Seems to be an omen. |
| Sir Knight07-28-05, 10:33 AM | But then again it's upside down. The binding and the pages inside are 180 degrees out of phase with each other. My Planar Handbook is EXACTLY the same way! My players keep asking me why I read it upside down. :) |
| DragonDeadite07-28-05, 11:28 AM | Complete Arcane is the best! Cool feats, awesome charcters (except no one's played a Wu-Jen yet) and the spell options are very cool. I like the Favored Soul, kind of a cleric/sorcerer hybrid. Very neat. Not a huge fan of the feats or the spells in it so I don't really use it very much. CAd. is nice too, cool PrCs and feats in it. Of course, I only OWN Arcane, but I borrow everyone else's books too. Libris Mortis is very cool too. Almost want to call those books the Complete Monster series... hehehehehe... okay, I'm done. |
| Siduakal07-28-05, 11:52 AM | Complete Warrior is my favorite.. Though It'd easily be surpassed if they made a 3.5 Arms and Equipment guide. |
| Taeldrin Laesrash07-28-05, 12:10 PM | (except no one's played a Wu-Jen yet) Of course not. They're wizards with an Oriental twist. Spell Secrets are cheap metamagic feats, and Guardian Spirit is just a replacement Familiar. |
| Fuzzyd2007-28-05, 01:06 PM | Complete Adventurer is probably my personal favorite. No particular reason, just illogical preference. I share the OPs disdain for Complete Divine. Moreso the web enhancement than the book. It basically kidnaps game balance and makes a dress out of its skin. |
| BeyondFated07-28-05, 01:10 PM | Yeah, I have CW and CA, but CD and CA didn't stand out as having enough content I'd actually use. Normally with most supplements you only use about a third of the stuff in them, sometimes the really good ones break 50%. For CD and CA though I just didn't see anything I really wanted to use. Ummm...which CA are you talking about, man? |
| Black Jack Davey07-28-05, 01:18 PM | My favorite was Complete Adventurer. I own all four of the books and think that they make great resources, even if only for inspiration. I am impressed by the artwork in all of them, but I do have one complaint about content. I think that they all focus too much on Prestige Classes. There are other things that would be better, I think. I do, however, like the new base classes, particularly the Swashbuckler and the Warlock. I agree that the Complete Divine could have been much, much better. Though it was not as good as the others, let us still not forget that it is not worthless. Everything has it's place. |
| Damien_Blood07-28-05, 01:29 PM | i like all four, though all except the Complete Arcane kinda leave something to be desired. Of course, this is probably because i'm a mage at heart. I have used one of each new class from each book, but the warlock stole my favor for the arcane |
| cvazi07-28-05, 01:39 PM | Complete Warrior is my favorite, though when the Complete Psionics comes out in april next year- that will change. |
| eudas07-28-05, 01:41 PM | I didn't really see much in CD, either, until I went about making a clerical cohort. It's much more useful if you're trying to do something with a cleric. Druids and paladins can benefit mightily, as well, but really it's all about the clerics for that book. It's not that the book is bad, just that it's rather targeted. eudas |
| Kintara07-28-05, 03:04 PM | I think some of my favorite material is in Complete Adventurer, specifically, I really liked many of the spells and feats. There are some really top-notch Bard and Ranger spells in that book, and I really like them quite a bit. Also, many of the feats really felt like they opened options that weren't there before. I also like many of the prestige classes, though some are poorly put together. Complete Warrior is great for the feats (like the tactical feats), and some of the prestige classes as well. I like the Hexblade and Swashbuckler. Complete Arcane has the Warlock, which I find is an interesting class. There are also some nifty spells that are hard to live without, especially in the mid-levels, when direct damage comes into its own. Many of the Prestige Classes are nifty, as well. I honestly don't look through Complete Divine that much. It's not as flashy for me, though Divine Metamagic can be pretty powerful. Many of the Prestige Classes do very little for me, and are often too restrictive to be of much use. |
| Ut-Napishtim07-28-05, 03:10 PM | Ummm...which CA are you talking about, man? D'oh! LOL, I totally didn't realize that. I like Complete Warrior and Complete Arcane, Complete Adventurer and Complete Divine didn't make my shopping list. Sorry, I was totally zoning on that one! I think it's something of a testament to the Complete Arcane that it's so popular despite the Wu-Jen. I mean seriously, when I bought the book I was thinking: This really belongs in Oriental Adventures or something. I have yet to have seen or heard of anyone using one. While they and their spells take up like a third of (wasted space in) the book. Even the Warmage (which also takes up a lot of space) doesn't see a lot of play, although they're banned from my games due to Sudden Metamagics being outlawed. Still, Warlock seems to have gotten the most praise and play - and it takes up less than those two. It's definitely one of my favorites, but imagine how great that book could've been without the Wu-Jen and the Warmage. |
| Rathje07-28-05, 04:23 PM | I honestly don't look through Complete Divine that much. It's not as flashy for me, though Divine Metamagic can be pretty powerful. Many of the Prestige Classes do very little for me, and are often too restrictive to be of much use. Thank you. That's exactly what I was thinking of. The Prestige Classes are (almost) all for Cleric and Druid. While I realize that it is Complete Divine, I wanted to see more options to make religious characters of other classes. Not everyone who worships a deity is going to be Cleric or Commoner. Complete Warrior was for martial characters of all classes, but Complete Divine is for three classes (Cleric, Druid, and Paladin). |
| UltimateReality07-29-05, 02:18 AM | I think it's something of a testament to the Complete Arcane that it's so popular despite the Wu-Jen. I mean seriously, when I bought the book I was thinking: This really belongs in Oriental Adventures or something.I noticed they took some core classes with Oriental twists and put them in each book: Samurai, Ninja, Spirit Shaman, Wu-Jen. Can't say as anyone's ever played a Wu-Jen in our campaigns, though I'm looking at giving it a shot. It doesn't seem to quite compare to my usual wizards and other full-progression casters power-wise, though. But it could be interesting; even flavourful (if you run Oriental stuff, I guess?). |
| Ad Infinitum07-29-05, 03:30 AM | I liked Complete Adventurer - Ascetic Mage feat, Daggerspell Mage Prc, so many wonderful spells - but my favorite feat has to be arcane strike from Complete Arcane. I like playing wierd stuff like melee sorcerers. The feat is just powerful enough to let you do that. Practised Spellcaster's a close second. I actually like complete divine, but only for their arcane PrCs. Rainbow servant is pretty cool, especially since it can qualify you for geomancer without actually having to take a divine casting class. And Sorcerers with Miracle... :) And favored souls, of course. They kick ass. |
| Ut-Napishtim07-29-05, 10:22 AM | I noticed they took some core classes with Oriental twists and put them in each book: Samurai, Ninja, Spirit Shaman, Wu-Jen. You know, I totally didn't catch that. Maybe it's because the Samurai didn't take up a third of Complete Warrior. :D |
| UltimateReality07-29-05, 12:35 PM | You know, I totally didn't catch that. Maybe it's because the Samurai didn't take up a third of Complete Warrior. :D Maybe because the samurai doesn't get spells? :P You know the first thing I noticed about the base classes in CA is that they all start with "W". |
| JStegmaier07-29-05, 12:54 PM | I noticed they took some core classes with Oriental twists and put them in each book: Samurai, Ninja, Spirit Shaman, Wu-Jen. The spirit shaman is not the oriental class in the Complete Divine--the shugenja is. As for the topic of this thread, I own all three and enjoy them all. The Complete Arcane is far and away my favorite, as it contains one of my favorite base classes, the warlock. The Complete Warrior is probably my least favorite, as I found all three of the base classes in in to be rather lackluster. The idea of all three classes is great, but fail in the execution. (For my campaign(s), I'm instead using the Oriental Adventure's samurai and the Invocation Hexblade developed on the classes board here. I'm also considering replacing the swashbuckler with one of the swashbuckler classes developed here also, but I haven't looked into it too much.) |
| Ut-Napishtim07-29-05, 01:31 PM | Maybe because the samurai doesn't get spells? :P True, but Wu-Jen didn't have to have a whole new spell list - they were simply designed that way. There are a couple good classes and PrC's in there (CA) that more people use and don't hog up the whole book. Perhaps because the writers incorrectly felt they (Wu-Jen) would be the next big thing to hit D&D. It's just a little dissapointing to see so much content wasted on something I doubt any of my players will ever take. :weep: |
| UltimateReality07-29-05, 02:04 PM | he spirit shaman is not the oriental class in the Complete Divine--the shugenja is.thanks, I messed that up. :) Wu-Jen didn't have to have a whole new spell list - they were simply designed that wayTrue. I think they wanted to hype up the whole flavour thing. Personally, it really annoys me to see classes who may as well have access to the Sor/Wiz list. I mean, instead of listing it all out, it'd almost take less space to say, "They have access to the Wizard spell list, with the following exceptions: ..." (It annoys me about psionics a bit, too, only they may as well say "They have access to the following from the Wizard spell list: ...".) something I doubt any of my players will ever takePlay an Oriental campaign. ;) Besides, didn't they intentionally make the non-core base classes less versatile than their core counterparts? I hate playing one-trick ponies, which means I stick to core. A couple players have played the ninja for the invis-SA combo. We had a warmage. One player was a fan of warlocks (he's just that kinda guy). Ummmm. We haven't used the 3.5 versions of the other ones yet, though. |
| Griff_Goodbeard07-29-05, 03:13 PM | My rankings would be CW, CV, CA, and CD bringing up the rear. It's not even that CD is that bad of a book, I've just gotten a lot more use out of the other books. The relics kind of rubbed me the wrong way, and the spells (and feats to a lesser extent), felt more Druid focused than Cleric. BTW I'm not a big fan of Druids so that might explain it. ;) |
| Bruunwald07-29-05, 04:00 PM | Hello, all. Yesterday afternoon, I purchased Complete Adventurer, Complete Arcane, and Complete Divine. About a week ago, I got Complete Warrior. Does anyone have a favorite? A least favorite? Do you dislike all four? Please tell me why, if you don't mind sharing. -Rathje The irony is, even though I like Complete Adventurer best, I usually end up using Complete Divine the most, probably because there are no clerics in the group, and as DM, I end up running an NPC cleric all the time. But I agree. I think Complete Divine came out first. But at any rate, they seemed to get better one by one, until Complete Divine seemed sort of sad and lacking next to my beloved Complete Adventurer, and my almost-as-beloved Complete Arcane. Though, let me caveat that by saying that I recently tooled up a goblin spirit shaman, and that is a pretty cool low-level bad guy. |
| Calatash07-29-05, 07:30 PM | Complete Arcane and Adventurer were easily my favorite two :) Complete Divine more or less sucked, cept for the Arcane Disicple feat that my Warmage took to get easy access to Argent Savant :) |
| Dauntless07-29-05, 07:43 PM | Warrior came out first. I think in my group, we get the most use out of complete Warrior, followed by Complete Arcane for feats and spells, Complete Divine for feats and spells (and one player made a Radiant Server of Pelor). Complete Adventurer is bringing up the rear since none of us have made new characters since it came out (with the exception of one scout). Complete Warrior: Simply because no fighter or barbarian in his right mind will NOT take a prestige class. Also oodles of fighter feats means more options = good. Every warrior we've had recently has had SOMETHING out of this book. Complete Arcane: Sudden Metamagic has become very popular with our group, especially sudden maximize for one hard hit to start a fight. I DM for a warlock, and in our other game is a warlock LBEG. I want to try a lot of the PrCs (especially the Iot7fV), but I never seem to get a chance. Complete Divine: All of our paladins and most of our clerics take a lot of divine feats, trying to get more use out of their turn attempts. Our druid player took at least one feat as well. Complete Adventurer: We have one scout right now, and I have a rogue aiming for spymaster. I like a lot of the options in the book and need to try them out eventually. |
