I am horribly guilty of being indecisive. My group switches off DMs (I do my campaign one week, my buddy does his the nest week). We live on a small island and have one gaming group, so it prevents any one person from being screwed into always DMing and never getting to play. Anyway, on to my story.

I cannot stick with one character. Both myself and the other DM have the same problem, and we're pretty lenient with each other. We can't finalize a character to save our lives. We both get bored with our chracters too quickly, even though they're all really cool. It's not so much that we get bored, we just always have new cool ideas. This is why we're the DMs. We make up awesome BBEGs, semi-major NPCs, and we can pull interesting characters for the PCs to interact with out of our you-know-whats. But I digress, the problem is not that we're great DMs (humble, aren't I?), but that we're both horribly indecisive players. I currently have a Mystic 1 destined to become a Battle Medic. He's going to focus on his shield mainly, but he uses a Scimitar as well (I wanted to break from the Light Mace+Steel Sheild stereotype). I'm having so much fun with him already, especially with being a foreigner in an Oriental Adventures campaign, what with the conflicts of basic morals and such. We've just started, so I haven't had a chance to switch, but in the last campaign it went something like this: Rogue, Sorceror, Rogue, Sorcerer/Druid/Mystic Theurge. In my current campaign the other guy went something like this: Samurai, Fire Sorceror, Cold Sorceror, Samurai, Lightning Sorceror (promised me it was his last switch).

Anyone else have this problem? One thing that I've found that helps is to sit down with a new character idea and flesh it out a bit, building a solid NPC that I can pull out of my folder (I keep everything on my iBook) and toss into an encounter. It helps because I get to see my new cool idea put onto paper, so I get a) to see if it still looks cool/feasible, and b) get its creation out of the way. It's even better when I get to throw the NPC into an encounter, because then I get to see if he's actually good and cool, or gets totally owned (as my dual-wielding Half-Dragon fighter NPC did, R.I.P. Irzokh). Anyway, I just felt compelled to post this. Not looking for a big solution ot anything, just felt like sharing what I figured might be a common problem. [/self-gratifying confession]

I got exactly the same problem. I play very little compared to how much I DM, and with time, I'm losing the entushiasm in playing. I get new character ideas on a daily basis, so when I got to create a character, I got tons of options. That's not bad, of course not, but I can't decide.
Then its personality. I got so many NPCs with cool personalities that I want to develop further, perhaps through a PC character, but then I got the same problem. So many options I end liking never what I got, wanting to be something else.

I think it's the "DM playing syndrome"

If you want to play a different character every week stop playing in a campain and just play one shot aventures,it takes 4 minutes of design time for each minute of play time for a campaign. It takes about 2 minutes of design time for 1 minute of playtime for one shot adventures.A one shot adventure features more action than talk as well!Eventually you will learn to appreciate campaign play again.
