Confused about bloodlines [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-08-04, 10:02 AM I can't seem to understand the bloodlines as given in the Unearthed Arcana. When a character takes a level of bloodling does he have to take in place of his class for the level? If so... what's the point of bloodlines if you have to give up class levels?

12-08-04, 11:36 AM I will take a stab at it... the reason you would take a bloodline are 2 fold... the 1st reason is RP reasons... the second is that in exchange for 1-3 levels you can get several abilities... and you dont lose all the benefits from your normal class levels... I believe bloodline levels will ad to your caster level, but not for spells per day.

12-08-04, 11:55 AM I do believe you only get your bloodline for that level...I could be wrong and thinking of the paragon classes, but as I recall the things in Urban Arcana are usually presented in class format.

Whenever you do something like that, be it a level progression for a template, a paragon racial class, etc., you only get what it says you do, and you don't also get a "class" level that level, since you are taking it in place of your regular class.

12-08-04, 12:04 PM I could of sworn bloodline levels while not give HD actually did count for more than jsut getting the Bloodline special abilities... but i dont remember exactly how... I will try to look it up later and post exactly what happens that is if no one beats me to it.

They do count for caster level checks.

12-08-04, 08:43 PM Right, they get Caster levels- sorta.

Basically, you get an LA+ race, broken down over many levels, and don't have to "pay" the La+ until later. Generally, the Bloodlines are a bit weaker than the equivilant La race (minor is La+1, Major is La+3, etc). But then again, you can start with a major bloodline at first level, whereas if you want an La+3 race, that doesn't start until level 4, and then you have one HD in a 4 HD party.
