It was baffling to us when we searched the equipment charts and descriptions for this info but couldn't find it. Did they omit it by accident? Is there a standard rule for how much volume fits in common containers, like 10x the item's weight?

I think its more up to the DM.

A belt pouch might carry 10 oz of herbs for spells or 30 gold/silver pieces or 2 potions. Not all belt pouches are the same shape, some might be more for herbs and some might be for potions.

A general standard I go by is: How much can I fit in my backpack when I go camping? And: How much stuff fits into one pants pocket?

i generally assume that adventurers are decent packers...

if they carry it on their backs, and only have "standard" gear, they don't usually have a lot of room for treasure, body parts, or lots of captives...(unless you have the captives carry the body parts...)

most of my characters get a wagon/cart and ALWAYS have a mount

then again, i usually play wiz/psion/clr char's, and often gnomes and halflings, so if i want to be honest about the gears weight (and carry all the stuff i want) it aint all gonna be in a backpack

my camping pack holds about 2000 cu inches (or 32 liters of storage)
belt pouches would likely hold 65 cu in (or 1 l)
maybe double or triple that for sling "purses" or single messenger type bags or wallets

This post has continually come up time and time again. No, there isn't anything in any of the DMing materials or Player books. But there was a link on the WoTC guides that had all of the container limits including the metric conversions.

Since the change to the new format, i'm not sure if I can find it, but I'll have to look. I have it on hardcopy currently.

Awesome, thanks everyone and thanks BobtheMighty!

Wow, 10 lbs. for a belt pouch? That's up to 500 coins, not too shabby at all.

Thanks again :)
