So Im playing a dread necromancer. I attempted to control the some undead before me, I rolled max HD 8, and damage of like 18. I was told I dont have the ability to control any of them (total controlled HD cant exceed my own). However, my DM and everyone in my group seems to think that controlling works the same way as destroying, which requires my HD to be twice theirs. So is this true? Does controlling undead require me to have twice their HD?

They get this from the sentence in PH 159, where it explains the difference between Good and evil clerics, they believe the two are the same in the sentence "Undead that would be turned are rebuked instead, and those that would be destroyed are controlled."

Correct. You need to be 2x level (HD) to control just like destroying.

You instead if failing that rebuke the lot.

That is correct. You could control 8 1 HD undead (Skeletons), 4 2 HD Undead(Zombies) or 2 4HD undead (Ghouls) or any combination equal to your level.

As has been said, Rebuking/Controlling mirrors Turning/Destroying perfectly.
