If you're going to DM, you'll be needing all three of the core rulebooks. The DM has a lot of stuff to read. It's not an easy job.

If you're going to be starting the game with others who haven't played the game before, I'd suggest getting the Basic Game boxed set, and delaying the purchase of the books until you've played around with the basic game.

The three core rulebooks all cover different material. There is very little overlap between them.

Actually, if you plan on running anytime in the future with the full DnD ruleset, I would recommend against purchasing the Basic Game, especially if you are short on cash, as can be inferred from your post. The reason being is twofold. First, and perhaps foremost, if you plan on playing DnD down the line, the core rulebooks must eventually be purchased/ To buy the Starter Game on top of this is just adding more cash to the already hefty pile you will have to dole out. Additionally, the Basic Game set out of the box is not entirely compatable with the full DnD ruleset. Even after fully comprehending the starter game, you are still left with little headway into the larger game. Many have been frustrated by the inconsistancies translating the Basic Game into the core rulebook set. I would recommend instead simply purchasing one copy of the Player Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide (Ask your group if they would be willing to contribute some cash, as these rulebooks will be essential to the functionallity of the entire group). I say only the PHB and DMG not because the Monster Manual is unnecessary, but because groups severely strapped on funds can find temporary, less expensive alternatives. Wizards has free downloadable modules on their site which provide not only a premade adventures perfect for novice DMs, but also statistics for the monsters involved in these scenarios. This works great for learning the mechanics of the game without having to delve into complex, campaign shattering cause and effect. However, once you have the means, I would suggest picking up the Monster Manual to finish out the core rulebook set.

Ultimately, the DM is going to need all 3 core books at least, but at the start, if you can trust your players, you might be able to get by with not getting the PHB. One of the players will need it, though for character creation. the DMG has more of the DM only information, whereas the PHB has info mostly about the characters. There are sections of the PHB you will need to study (preferably memorize or nearly so) particularly the combat section.

Btw, you can get about 85% of the books online at the SRD: (Link Here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35)) I say 85% since there are a few things you can't get there. For instance the SRD doesn't talk about stat generation for the characters at all (especially the alternate methods in the DMG) nor when the characters gain stat increases.

You can get by without the Monster Manual by using the SRD for a while, but the simple convenience of having a bound book can eventually get worth it.

If cost is the biggest issue, you might want to consider buying from an online retailer like Amazon or Walmart.com. You can get the PHB, DMG, and MM for only $55.24 at Walmart.com, and shipping is free if you are willing to pick it up from one of their stores. Thats quite a bit less than you would pay at your average walk-in type store.

Good Luck
