After a couple of weeks of tweaking and prodding and with the help of many of you, I want to introduce Corwyn Haverson.

Corwyn was raised in the backwoods, traveliing a lot as a child. He was raised exclusively by his father, his mother having died as a result of root flu when Corwyn was two. Not having much money, Corwyn and his father moved around a lot, living off the land when they could, spending their meager savings only for necessary items. Corwyns father did odd jobs in cities and towns when he could to make an extra silver piece or two, teaching many of these skills to Corwyn, he never was able to master any of them, but taught his son what he could.

As a child, Corwyn fell in love with his little bow and arrow, and soon became a reasonable shot. He made friends when he could, but moving so much made any lasting relationships impoossible. He learned enough social skills to survive, but would never be mistaken as a people person. Corwyns father did his best to instill in his child strong morals, even though he occasionally needed to steal to survive. Although a strong man, who passed the genes to his son, Corwyn's father taught his son to look for alternatives to using brute strength. As a result, although strong, Corwyn is keen and inquisitive, always looking for a new way to accomplish a task, rather than simply doing what has worked in the past.

As he grew older, Corwyn began to develop a fascination of Giants, whom his father had told him stories of. He learned all he could about them, even learning how to speak their language. He picked up on many of their quirks and nuances and consequently knows almost everything about them.

On his 17th birthday, Corwyn set off on his own, with his fathers will wishes, (and a dagger that was given to him by his father and his father before him) hoping to acheive sucess and be able to help his father as he aged...

I see playing him as a jack of all trades, able to do many things well, but nothing with mastery, other than archery, which has always been a lifelong love. Never having been in many social situations, he is weary of trusting anyone intially and isn't usually great in social spots. After having seen the big city, he is a bit jealous of what he lacked as a child. Despite his fathers strong moral teachings, he can't help but want wealth (some for him, some for his father) and struggles to sometimes see the proper morality in certain situations. He is able to use his intellect to get him out of and occasionally into sticky situations and it comes in handy in adventuring. He is willing to travel with companions to chase his dream of wealth, although it takes a while for him to really trust anyone, and he is fine with being alone if need be.

You never mentioned race or class, but I'm guessing he's a 1st level human ranger.

I must say, this is one very good first character. Seems like you have a solid concept of the rules (for making a character, at least), and an eagerness to really flesh out your character and make him come to life - perfect D&D player material.
Oh, question, is that list of skills you only took ranks in, or the ones you maxed out ranks in? Because you should have more skills than that as a ranger. Like, 8 skills with ranks at least.
Anyway, Good luck on your first game.

Everything looks good except the name.

Corwyn

Understand that I know you like the name Corwyn, and all. But of all names in RPG's for all time, I don't think there is a name that is more used then this. It seems to me that everytime I have a new player join my group, he'll always make his first character named Corwyn.

Other then that, everything is good.

Great job for a first time player.

Most DMs would kill to have their noobs grasp the concept of the backstory.

A few mechanics things:

Did you typo your INT and WIS scores in your post? Traditionally, INT comes before WIS in the score order, and it looks like the numbers may be in this order, and the labels not. Most rangers like to keep their wisdom higher in order to assure them access to their spells later on. If you did typo the order then no big deal, but ignore the intelligence based parts of the advice below.

As I'm guessing that you're a first level human ranger, you should have 36 skill points to spend: 6x4 from 1st level ranger; 2x4 from +2 Int modifier; and 1x4 from being human. May I suggest Survival and Ride be among those skills selected with these bonus points.

You also have another language available, as you will start with common and can learn 2 more, thanks also to your +2 Int modifier.

Good luck!

Lets hope to see Corwyn back here when he's 20th level.

Although the order may be different than normal, I do indeed have the INT at 15. I wanted to stay true to the jack of all trades theme so I tried to get as many skills as possible, and also the high problem solving ability. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think with WIS 11 I can still get access to some ranger spells, just not all. Also, I think I am using 3.0 core books as I don't see any survival skill that everyone keeps mentioning, is this the case or am I missing something?

I also realized that I left out two skills, I think I figrued 7 with four ranks each. (4+2)*4=24 + four more for human. Is that right?

Hmm, 3.0 is long gone in my memory, so I can't recall how the Track feat worked. But yea, you're math would be right at 7 skills at max, so you'd need to look for two more. May I suggest Knowlage (nature), that would go nicely to learning about the woods from your past, and maybe handle animal? I thought Rangers got track for free anyways... oh gone are the days of 3.0 in my head. (I might have an old PhB in my room somewhere)

As for your question about wis and rangers, yes, you'll only be able to use level 1 spells from your list with a wisdom of 11. And if I recall the spells/day pregression, you wouldn't be able to benifit from spells till your wis was at 13, or till you were around 7th or 8ish level as a stat of 11 won't give you bonus spells (The chart to figure bonus spells is at the very beginning of the Players Hand Book, you should be able to find it.). You figure out the highest level you can know by taking your stat, 11, and subtracting 10 from it, 1, so 1 is the highest spell level you can know that's cast off of wisdom.

Yes yes.. I'm a complicated explainer, so if someone else can simplify it, go ahead.

Never played 3.0 (I'm a born 3.5) but I remember that Wilderness Lore (or something) was the skill that was replaced by Survival. You should get that if you can.

He can always adventure to bump his Wisdom before he gets spells, but lost skill points due to a low Intel are lost & gone forever
