| BillyBob06-07-05, 02:20 AM | Hey, how are you doing? This is my first post, so bare with me. Not to long ago, I had a DM who issued a challenge to the PC's in our game. All of us had 1 million experience points to create as many characters as we wanted for this super dungeon crawl he was making. We all stayed in one of the PC's houses for a day and a half making characters for this game. So after some 30+ hours of character generation and optimization (we didnt yet know about these message boards) we were ready to fight. Most players had all kinds of sorcerror or wizard levels, but some of us knew better. My DM is the type to turn off magic. One guy was this cheesed out "thing" from the Oriental Adventures book, a book so broken it shouldn't be allowed into standard D&D games. One player had bout Golem Armour for himself, and at the last minute, he says that we can't have artifacts. The DM uses the wish spell to turn off everyones magic but his own. Then to top it off, he's got items on himself that somehow raise his AC to over 200. Is that even possible? Needless to say that the fight lasted about 15 minutes. Is this even fair? Someone please tell me, cause we're all still a little heated over the lost day and a half of our lives. |
| Asmodai_0006-07-05, 02:43 AM | Shoot him in the face. With a hammer. Quickly. |
| The nameles one06-07-05, 02:51 AM | Now who had that Hammergun(tm) emoticon? |
| Venom of the Yuan Ti06-07-05, 02:59 AM | This is a type ESS DM. I would have done sort of simmilar things as I am ES. ESS Stands for Evil(General type) Sadistic(Sub-group) Stupid(Cos there is no fun in killing PCs that easily...) I dont have the second S qualifier. NEVER PLAY WITH AN ESS However ES can be very fun. |
| Maerdash06-07-05, 03:00 AM | You know I came here expecting to give good advice but I find I must use the EVIL half of my brain for this. Take your DM (braindead) outside, hoist him by his toes from a tree branch, strip him naked, smear peanut butter all over his body, place bird seed in the peanut butter for maximum effect, tie steak around his mid section. Sit back and enjoy the pleas for help as animals and insects congregate for this once in a life time meal. Ok dont do that the legal issues could be bad, but I would definately use the hammer gun set on auto, dont aim for the face until youve hit the groin a few times though. :D |

I personaly am peved by this wonton act of stupidity and it dident even happen to me. I would bild a giant bunny leve it on his door step as a peace offering, hide insid then jump out at night taking him totaly by supprise!!!HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA :hoppingma :censored: :waits: |
| Yruc06-07-05, 03:40 AM | Get a new DM yours obviously believes in the DM vs Players mentality and that is a loose loose for both sides. Tell Dm you want a rematch but that he and you should all make new characters since you know what each other had on this time. Don't spend any time working on characters, just show up at next session, if the DM asks what character you are going to play, make up something say a level 20 warrior/cleric/rogue etc......then when the game starts, keep the pretense up until the DM is about to reveal his super duper munchkin of doom, then have each of you say that you are all level 1 kobold sorcerers with 3 con and 1 hit point, and that your characters realize that it is a foolish fight to try and BEAT the DM and they have no hope so they magic missles themselves to death and then have everyone get up and leave. Just for fun roll for dmg :) |
| allenchan06-07-05, 03:43 AM | The DM uses the wish spell to turn off everyones magic but his own. Then to top it off, he's got items on himself that somehow raise his AC to over 200. Wait, the dm is a dmpc? dear god. please let this be a troll. :( |
| Flushmaster06-07-05, 04:00 AM | Shoot him in the face. With a hammer. Quickly. Make sure that you've got a lot of extra hammers, because this process should be repeated. A lot. What you really need is a hammergun capable of firing a whole bag of hammers as once and a lot of large bags full of hammers. Seriously, this guy sounds like a major jackass. He's deliberately abusing his power as DM with that whole "turn off magic for everybody else" thing, which is possibly the biggest load of DM BS I've ever heard. If this DM comprehends the concept of subtlety at all (many of this type regrettably do not) then I fully endorse Yruc's suggestion of the rematch with new characters and making a bunch of first level kobold sorcerors with one HP each and have them magic missile themselves to death at the start of any combat. If you're not allowed to cast the spell at yourself then have the party take turns casting at eachother with the last one stabbing themselves in the throat with a dagger (while the coupe de grace rules require a helpless target, I'm pretty sure that a willing target such as oneself works too). Use any money you get to do every possible thing you can to improve your initiative so you can go first. If the whole "no magic for you" thing is already in place then just do the self coup de grace with a dagger thing instead. Then have everybody silently give the DM the finger and walk out, refusing to say another word. |
| BillyBob06-08-05, 03:04 PM | Get a new DM yours obviously believes in the DM vs Players mentality and that is a loose loose for both sides. In his defense, this isn't a regular thing. He doesnt always set us up in suicide, no win situations. But it has become more of a regular thing since the aforementioned event. I heard of one game he ran where he put the PC with an average level of about 5 against some epic dire rat. He said the object of that game was to see what the PCs would do. (why that's even a question, I dont know) He said that if they petted the rat, the conflict would have been averted. I think I forgot to mention, that this particular game was inside of a gladiator style campaign, where everything to that point had been "kill or be killed". Last week, we were in a game where we were all level 1 characters who were hired by a king to save his daughter from a monster. As it turns out, the monster is a level 20 Lych/incubus, and the girl wasn't kidnapped so to speak. She's there of her own free will. I got turned into a frog about 1 minute into the fight. Another PC got turned into a squirel. The DM said the object was to survive. He never outright tried to kill any of us, just have sex with the female characters. His games this summer have been kind of weird, and his rulings on certain things a little off. He said that the Star Wars RPG is 100% compatible with D&D, which if you've ever read it breaks the game horribly! We've got a group of about 10 people on average, and I think he's starting to get burned out. I run Palladium system games ( where it takes about 3 hours to make a character, yeah!) and the DBZ RPG, if you can even call it roleplaying. He doesn't seem interested in any of those. None of us are that familiar with a particular campaign setting in D&D, so he's to go to guy for that game. Is it possible to run a D&D game without having a predesigned campaign setting? Some light on the subject would be greatly appreciated. We meet on Thursdays, so any quick answer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help guys. |

We meet on Thursdays, so any quick answer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help guys. Sure it is. I do it all the time. Of course, it helps to have a bit of experience and some improvisational skills. But, the real crux is know what the players enjoy. If they want to crawl around dungeons all day, then a "world" with lots of dungeons is pretty easy to come up with. The "Ruins of great High-Exalted Mucky-Muck's Haunted Forbidden Fortress" can keep the PCs crawling for 10 levels if you want. World building is not all that difficult. The more work you put into it, the better and more lifelike the world will be, but if you are with a group that is willing to come back for a bashing like that over and over again, even the most rudimentary and contrived archetypical world with a basic plotline should hit them like a refreshing summer breeze. |
| Phrennzy06-08-05, 04:21 PM | Hands down the greatest DM ever. Ever. EVER. EVER! |
| Santrilla06-08-05, 04:32 PM | Honestly? Sounds like he's bored with D&D. Present a new hobby to him, like stamp collecting. |
| Capt. Pixel06-08-05, 05:42 PM | Building your own world is quite simple, really. Remember that you don't have to do all the work. Let your Players fill in the details too. for instance: DM: "You head into the forest. (PC1, what kind of trees are in the forest?)" PC1: "Ummm, I donno, how about maples?" DM: "Maple trees form the majority of the forest with small patches of lower brush and scrub." DM: "(PC2, roll 4d6 for visibility in the forest.)" PC2: (rolls) "15" DM: "Your range of vision is restricted to 150' or less due to the heavy underbrush." -or- DM: "You enter the small, fortified city named - (points to PC3 'gimme a name') PC3: "Wenglebottom!" DM: (winces - okay we might change that later) "There are two guards at the open gate." DM: the first guard says "name thyself and thy business" (at this point the PCs chatter with the guards. let one of the less active PCs actually play the other NPC guard) Your only real responsibility is to maintain some sort of cohesion and consistency in the world. If the laws of physics apply, make sure they apply uniformly. If it's determined that there are laws and consequences to actions, the DM should insure that those laws and consequences are acted out. If rivers run downhill, then all rivers should run downhill. You get the idea. It's much easier to get a group functioning within your homebrew world if they are part of the creation process. Then it becomes their world too. Let them live, work and play in their world, and you won't even need to create adventures. That'll take care of itself. Trust me. ;) |
| barret3b06-08-05, 05:50 PM | To be a bit more specific, he used miracle and prayed to Mystra so she would hit the "off" switch on us. And I was one of the afformentioned characters to go straight magic and as a result completely nudered. I think I took the whole thing worse than everyone else, as I am "newer" to the game and I still bring it up from time to time. In this current "Free World" campaign we all started off as slaves. There was an oppurtunity where half the PCs broke out, and most got away. I, however,(a Warlock with spiderclimb)didn't thanks to a Succubus who happened to be on the prowl. And I haven't had anything to do with what happened to my character since, 3 playing sessions ago. The GM is a cool guy, but he is wearing us(me) somewhat thin the way things are going. Okay, rant over. |
| Asmodai_0006-08-05, 09:12 PM | He said that the Star Wars RPG is 100% compatible with D&D Isn't Star Wars a D6 system right now? And seriously, why haven't you guys shot this DM in the face? If one of you ran a game without so much as looking at the DMG you'd be better than this guy! |
| Flushmaster06-09-05, 12:52 AM | If I'd spent that much time making an epic wizard and then the DM informs me that my character is essentially an epic commoner due to a deity "hitting the off switch" on my magic, I'd punch him. Seriously. By the sounds of things, he was present while you made the characters and obviously planned this "no magic for you" thing and let you waste your time creating a character that he planned to declare completely useless. That isn't a DM, that's a jackass, a bastard, and an ******* (among numerous other adjectives). |

Not to be rude or condensending, but is someone entering puberty or just now noticing girls / guys? Cause it sounds like it. Again ditch the guy you will be much better off. yes do not need your own world, not difficult to create, use these eash modules to start out with. They are free!!!! www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/oa/20030530b |
