Crazy mounts? [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-23-05, 04:32 PM We're finally playing in a low magic campaign (i.e. almost no magic at all). My character I've been working on (level 3) I have decided according to his past that he makes the most sense as a Ranger/Fighter. I decided he should also have a mount.

Edit: With a little common sense, I've realized my answer to most of the question, so it's irrelevant and confusing and I'm taking it out.

Here's the question:

What's the appropriate CR to CR ratio for mount to PC?

05-24-05, 02:27 AM I wouldn't know the CR to CR ratios for Mounts. I do however know that the PHB supplies the Ranger class with an Animal Companion that includes mounts. I also recall them gaining abilities as you increase in level.

Might be worth looking into IMHO.

05-24-05, 03:43 AM If you have the Handle Animal skill and an animal companion that is a size category larger than you, then you have your mount. To top it off, it gets tougher as you gain levels (in ranger, at least).

05-24-05, 03:53 AM Based on what you said about your character, you can't have more than 2 Ranger levels. Which would give you the following options for mounts: any normal mount you could buy on a marketplace.

As soon as you attain your 4th Ranger level, you could take an Animal Companion (which could also serve as your mount). You can choose between:badger, camel, dire rat, dog, riding dog, eagle, hawk, horse (light or heavy), owl, pony, snake (Small or Medium viper), or wolf (for aquatic campaigns crocodile, porpoise, Medium shark, and squid may be added to the list).

05-24-05, 07:41 PM Heh, guess I deleted too much. I'm going Ranger/Fighter 2:1 pretty much, because he is sort of styled that way but I want more skills (for Survival, Heal, Knowledge Nature, Craft Poison, etc...) so I'm going more Ranger.

My animal companion will be the same as a Druid of 1/3 my level. So... really, I don't think it's going to cut it. It'll die real quick.

I do realize Mounted Combat can negate hits on my mount, but just the one that gets through and bam! dead mount.

So, I want a mount that can keep up with me. Pretend I don't even have Ranger levels if you want, just pure Fighter. What do you guys think a reasonable CR mount to PC ratio would be?
