I saw an article in Dragon #323 that dealt with a sub-class of the Fighter: the Thane. The Thane advances exactly like a Fighter except that it must dedicate itself to a master (or suffer a -4 Charisma penalty... Something Fighters certainly don't need) and a Thane can take some extra feats. They are the following:

1. Aura of Bravery: your courage is so significant that even your allies benefit from it.

Benefit: all of your allies within 10 feet gain a +2 morale bonus on saves against fear effects so long as you do not suffer from a fear effect. You do not gain this bonus.

2. Improved Aid Another: you are skilled at aiding allies both on and off the battlefield.

Benefit: when successfully using the aid another action, you grant your ally a +4 bonus (as opposed to the normal +2 bonus).

Stalwart: you are particularly sure-footed and resistant to attacks that would move you.

Benefit: you gain a +4 bonus on the opposed Strength check made to resist bull rush, overrun and trip attacks.

All of these feats may be selected as one of his fighter bonus feats.

Do you think this variant is worth using? Which (if any) of the three extra feats would give me the best advantage? Do you know anything else about Thanes that I do not?

Edit: in the Aura of Bravery feat, it states that your allies gain a +2 moral bonus on saves against fear effects so long as you do not suffer from a fear effect. What does it mean by this? For example, if we're fighting a terrifying spectre of some kind, and I pass my fear check is the bonus conferred to my allies? I would imagine so. I would also suppose (from the description) that if I were to fail the save they would not gain any benefits. What if we were fighting against two spectres and I passed my fear check against one and failed it against another? Would the +2 bonus be conferred on one spectre but not on the other? Or would not +2 bonus have no effect?

I think it means the benefit for allies disappears if you suffer any Fear effects.

As for my opinion on the Thane, I do not think this sub-class is uninspired. It is easier for a DM just to add those three feats as General feats and leave off the insipidly flavored "master" restriction.
