Sorcerors can use a crossbow I believe, but not wizards. Bow/Sword are fine since they are elven weapon proficiency. But you should also carry a quarterstaff for it's blugeoning damage (if you are truly worried about hitting stuff). So you will have slashing (longsword), bludgeoning (quarterstaff), ranged piercing (longbow)..so you can also try to go for a bludgeoning ranged weapon (like a sling?) and a piercing melee weapon (dagger maybe?). Your hitpoints will equal 3d4+6(1d4+2 if you use my con/dex switch) or 3d4+9(1d4+3 if you keep con the way it is). For you the AC will be 10 + 3 (Dex, my way) = 13 or 10 + 2 (Dex, your way) = 12. GP will be 2,700. So your equipment and money shouldn't cost more than that total. Skills/Feats/Spells are more upto your own tastes though..so I hope I helped some. |

Also, being a half-elf doesn't mean you get the elves racial weapon familiarity, so no longbow or longsword. I'd settle for a light crossbow. Keep in mind your spellbooks has only 100pages. At every lvl gained you get two place two new spells into the spellbook. Other then this, you'll need to spend 24hrs and 100gp to learn and record a new spell. Remember that each spell takes up a number of pages equal to it's spell level i.e. 1st lvl spells take 1 page while 5th lvl spells take 5 pages. Cantrips (0 lvl spells) take up one page. In terms of specialization, it depends on what you what. If you're the party's mobile artillery, I'd go for Evocation school. Specialization allows you to prepare one additional spell of your specialty school per spell level each day but you'll need to give up two schools in return. For HP, add the whole d4 + CON bonus at 1st level. In the campaign I'm playing, we add 1/2HD+1+CON bonus at every level after the first. In your case, you'll likely roll. Since you have a very high INT modifier, I'd say go for Concentration, Craft, Decipher Script, Knowledge(arcana) and Spellcraft. Concentration is a must for battle-casting, Craft will be for when you gain the Craft Item feats, Decipher Script so you can read scrolls, Knowledge(arcana) to aid your Spellcraft checks and finally Spellcraft, to help you indentify spells so you can counterspell or dispel them. Okay, that's all I got for know. EDIT: Wizards are proficient with the club, dagger, heavy crossbow, light crossbow and quarterstaff. For future items, I would also recommend the Mithral Buckler (1,015gp), Ring of Protection and Cloak of Resistance. Please refer to the DMG for details. |
| Faeirlyte10-13-04, 10:50 AM | Thank you! This is exactly the kind of things I need help on. I have printed up your suggestions and will pore over the PHB and see what I need to do about the changes, etc. Where do you find the chart for goldpieces, so I won't have to ask such trivial questions in the future? And where do you find the one for experience points for a 3rd level wizard? I need to make a system for marking important charts-these manuals are full of them!! |
| Veomyr10-13-04, 11:29 AM | Here's my list of suggestions. I recommend leaving Cha & Int alone. Switch Str and Wis. You're more likely to need the extra bonus to Will and Wis skills than you are needing the extra strength. For Dex/Con, I suggest leaving them alone. Having a +3 to AC over a +2 is good, but eventually you'll get hit, and you'll wish you had the extra hitpoints from a +3hp/lvl vesus +2hp/lvl. Those extra hitpoints add up over time. Go with a light crossbow. Stay at range and pluck away. If you are forced into melee, go with the quarterstaff and fight defensively/total defense. For skills, you'll want concentration, spellcraft, and knowledge(arcana). Keep these maxed. After that, it's a matter of taste. Keep Tumble in mind, because at 5+ ranks, you get a bonus to fighting defensively and total defense. For feats, if you plan to cast offensive magic, go Spell Focus/GSF for whatever school you plan to use most. Combat Casting is never a feat to scoff. Augment Summoning if you plan to summon alot. |
