I'm playing a wizard/air elemental savant and I'm thinking of creating some new spells due to the lack of a lot of interesting electricity spells..

One I was thinking of was basically an electricity-based fireball. I basically get that already with fireball, but, that's not as much fun..

The other I was thinking of is something like an electricity-net. Probably a 4th-level spell, it'd send out a net of electricity straight forward, anyone in it's path gets a reflex save or be paralyzed for caster level/2 rounded down rounds. The only problem is I think it may be too powerful... what do you think?

I know a lot of this is up to my DM, but..

So its like a hyper version of Web?

Web is 2nd level, so for that to be 4th level doesn't seem unreasonable.

Take a feat called Energy Substitution it changes a spells element to what element you want, its in the Tome & Blood and in Complete Arcane. If you want additional spells of electrical element try also picking up the Pocket Arcana by Mongoosepublishing.com it has alot of spells all dedicated to an arcane spellcaster. Or look in Forgotten Realms settings books and you will find alot more additional spells for electrical energy.

For 4th level, this seems too powerful. Compare it to Hold Monster. Hold Monster = 1 target, Will Save, 1 round/level, and a will save each round to try to break the spell.

Your proposed spell can feasibly catch more then 1 monster (range and AoE of spell will determine how many targets can get caught), 1/2 the duration of hold monster (if I got the hold monster duration right to begin with), and a reflex save instead of Will save with no opportunity to break the paralyzation down the line. If it was a single target spell, I'd probably still be bothered by not having second chances to try to break the paralyzation since hold person/monster offers that opportunity (though I don't think ghoul touch does so maybe I'm wrong about the power of paralyzation).

Maybe a 6th level spell and that's a very rough guesstimate without knowing range and AoE of spell and if there's some kind of penalty even if the save is successful and stuff.
