creating players [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-30-06, 07:36 PM so im trying to regroup my friends to play again.
none of us have, we tried once but couldnt create players successfully and ended up doing something else.
with all the race and class and other additions, making stats seemed harder than the book was leading on.
we want to paly but i dont want it to end up like last time.

is there some sort of a chart or something or a list that shows what races get waht and what classes get what.

we also basicaly need to know what to get started, so any other help is welcomed (and needed:D ), but please, at least the character stuff.

There is a step by step guide in the PHB as well as the charts that you are requesting.

There are doctors who specialize in that sort of thing. And you can always adopt.

11-30-06, 08:52 PM In your case, seeing as nobody has played before - just take the plunge. Choose a race and a class - then look up what they can do. Practise without your friends. See if you can work it out. It will be easier than trying to do it as a group. I assume you have the players handbook.

How are you guys generating stats anyway? Nothing too hard about rolling 4d6's and adding up the top 3. e.g. I roll 4 six sided dice, i might get a 3, 4, 5, and 6. I discard the lowers (the 3) then add up the others - I get 15. Do this 6 times and you have your stats. You can place them where you like.

At this stage don't be too concerned with what's the best way to do something. You will get the hang of it after a couple goes. Just place stats where they feel right. Want someone strong? put a big stat in strength etc..

After than choose a race, add or minus what the race says from your ability scores. For example, if you are a halfling it says to add 2 to dex then minus 2 from strength. Do this. You now have your final scores that you can place on your character sheet.

As Einvaldurinn_mikli said - There is a step by step guide in the players handbook. Try starting from the beginning and making a character as you go.

12-01-06, 07:43 PM It can be a little intimidating if you do not have someone to look over your shoulder on the first time. Nick gave good advice, roll your stats, pick a class, pick a race, choose what score will go to what atribute, then modify the ability score according to the race limitations and bonuses.
Keep coming back to this thread as you create. i would like to see what you come up with. I am willing to check back and offer help along the way, I am sure others would as well.

Yes, it takes about 9 minutes to make a first level character, and about 9 months to make a first level player.

Yes, I enjoy running gags into the ground. :D

12-02-06, 11:38 AM You seem more interested in playing than they do (or they'd be posting here too), perhaps you could practice in your spare time? Run through the directions and make a few characters just to see how it works. Then you could help them through it when you get together again.
