I was thinking of making a wizard character for my next campain. Not because of the firepower but because of the creative ways you can use the lowest level spells to defeat high level oponents.

I allways hear wizards brag about that one time they tricked this one npc with this or that spell. PCs come up with some preaty creative ways to use their magic. So whats the best useage of magic you've ever come up with?

his I have done or that were done in one of my game

Hold someone in the middle of a blade barrier. Self explanaory ouchie time.

Disorganise a buch of troops with a ghost sound. My players were fighting this horde of goblins and there was this small hill on the goblins flank. The spellcaster used ghost sound to emulate to sound of approaching cavalry. The goblin had to send some troops up the hill to make sure that they were not being flanked. Thus they had to divide their forces.

I Fooled an assasin guild for 6 months (game time) with ghost sound. This guild was after a baby princess that I was supposed to keep safe. But I had left the baby with some powerfull and trustworthy friends. I kept up the illusion that I carried the baby by carrying a doll wrapped in blankets and some cooing sounds were made by a wand of ghost sound when witnesses were present.

I read a story about a wizard who was climbing up a ladder to escape some gnolls. In a clever act of desparation, he cast the spell Summon Mount to drop a surprized donkey on them. ;)

I used Silent Image, Rope Trick, Invisibility and Fireball together once to good effect. My party was attacking a warband of orcs and goblins which included a hill giant and a few ogres. We were only about 6th level, so it was a major challenge. I told my friends to hold their position about a 1/4 mile or so from the camp until they saw "the signal".

Then I cast Invisibility on myself and snuck up to the camp. I got close and cast Rope Trick. Then I cast Silent Image and made it appear that a large giant stepped out of a Portal in the middle of their camp. When a bunch of them rushed up to attack it, I lobbed a Fireball into the middle of them and climbed into the Rope Trick.

It took out over half of the lower level monsters and singed some of the ogres. The rest of the party then rode in and mopped up. I watched out of the window of the Rope Trick, and when the enemies had basically given up trying to get me and instead decided they better take care of the rest of the party, I opened the door up and blasted some more of them.

Basically anything you can do with a Silent Image spell.

Make a wall to hold in animals (including horses that have riders), children and other fools.

Make a fake spell to trick the gullible.

are two of the most common ones.

If you want creative spell use, play a sorcerer rather than a wizard. It's amazing what you can do with, say, Tenser's Floating Disc, when that's all you have to work with.
