Talking over ways to get a lot of attacks without Warshaper or Thri-Kreen cheese with a couple other players, I think I worked out a way for a normal character as a Dervish to pull off a 20-attack full attack, once per day. This led inevitably to the topic of critical fumble variants/houserules, and playing with or without them. And this led to another question, which I'm asking you all now.

If you were playing in a game where natural 1's on attack rolls only meant an automatic miss, and you made a 20-attack full attack and rolled a natural 1 for every single attack, would you want to stick with the misses only, or would you want/expect the most amazing disaster ever to befall your character?

I myself would take the horrific death, and actually be very disappointed if the DM didn't grant it. I don't like critical miss variants at all under normal circumstances, but the way I see it, if you roll 20 natural 1's in a row in one round, something pretty spectacular better happen.

I think that having a 20 attack full attack and rolling 20 nat 1s would be the most amazing disaster ever for that character. In other words, I'd expect the DM to stick with whatever rules had been determined for nat 1s to stick.

Well, considering the chances of rolling 20 natural 1's is 1 in about 105000000000000000000000000, I think—regardless of whether or not the DM decides to simply have the dervish slice herself into 20 pieces by accident—the entire group will stare dumbfounded at the dice for about 30 minutes of awkward silence (with crickets chirping in the background).

But, even if it is beating a dead horse, I suspect that every other member of the group would expect something fatal to happen, while the player of the dervish sits there refusing to believe that the dice just insta-killed his character.

Just wait until it actually happens, then you can make judgments.

Aren't polls against the Code of Conduct?

Who's polling? It's a simple question seeking to determine who else would be willing (maybe even eager) to give up a character's life to the most spectacular, legendary accident a campaign might ever see. I think it'd be pretty funny to go down in history as the guy that blundered so badly he turned himself into a red mist, I'd be sad if it didn't happen after I rolled that badly.

Even if it were a poll, it's a legitimate question, not off topic spam.

the character would simply explode. his tiny little non-hitting remains would cover a 3-mile radius.

(guilty) yes, i have done that very thing to a char that merely rolled straight 1's for one full turn. (4 attacks)
when the next turn came about and I picked up my weapon and stood up (standard action) and took a swing (standard action), another 1.........BOOM

DM:

party members: :uh-huh:

happy gaming

If I were DMing, I might have a big pit open under him with demons pouring out, They'd grab him and take him to hell where he'd be tortured for 20 years. Makes for good roleplaying.
