Welcom, freinds.
We all have particular instances in our roll-playing careers, as GMs and Players alike, that we consider to be most memorable.
What is your favorite roll-playing memory?
Did your 1st Level fighter somehow manage to take down a band of Hobgoblins raiding a village?
Was there a point in a game you played whene you thought "yup, it's over, give me th PHB, I'm makin' a new character" and yet somehow managed to survive almost certain ruin?
Did an acidental trip or fumble somehow manage to swing a fight in your favor?
Let me hear from ya'!

I was a 5th level dwarven cleric. Our plane was invaded by devils. I was face to face with a Balor. I beat him on initiative and had a spell readied that allowed for no SR, and I cast it. It hit. It actually did damage.

I laughed heartily, and then ran like a wuss.

Thing that still makes me laugh: A game a few years ago when I was in college. My friend and I both played Assassins...played the characters for close to six or seven months. The number of strait up, roll init combats? Two!
We each had unholy bluff, hide, move silently. When we decided someone had to die one of us would chat the guy up. The other would hide in plain sight and then death attack. Eventually we each ended up taking the Leadership feat so we mainly just threw minions at things.
Oh yeah. My character murdered his brother for putting Dust of Dryness in his wife's underwear drawer. I thought it was funny because the guy who was playing the soon-to-be horribly dead guy was responsible for just about every TPK in any game I ran.

As a DM, I had a square spiral in a one-off dungeon session that had a magic mouth cast at each corner (there must have been at least a dozen corners) saying "this is not the way".

I've never seen a party agonize so much about their decisions; there were about 8 players; about half refused to go past the first mouth; the rest went past the first couple of corners; you could see the doubt growing on their faces; nothing happened as they passed each corner.

Finally, more players got nervous and returned to the start of the spiral. 2 players went all the way to the middle; the dead end also had a magic mouth which said "you were warned."

The catch was that each corner on the way back had a trap, spell or a wandering monster to deal with.

The players who didn't go all the way in reacted with "I knew it!" or "I told you so!" or even laughter at the tormented players who went to the middle...

Only one of the two got back out. The other died only 5 feet from safety, crushed by a rolling boulder (I know, I know... hardly original, even in '88 when this happened "Run, Indy!"), creating much mirth among the other more cautious players.

I guess my favorite incident so far would have to be when I played my wizard Wolfgang. He manage to get shot...in the back...by his own allies three times and to top it all off the shooters were all elves. I've had a grude against elves ever since. Spooty elves.

Fantastic! Your elf friends need to learn how to fire a blasted bow!
I don't know if I, myself, would count that instance among my favorites.
Then again, we all have fun with different events!
Take it easy, pal.

"Picture it, Sicily ..."
(Golden Girls)

My group was teleported to an island where we had to collect 3 Artifacts before another team did ... and on top of that ... on a time limit.

I real time, it was 10pm, and as a gaming group we weren't sure as to whether we should do this first battle or not. Some people were sleepy.

We decide to do it.

Resources already low, we go up against a Titan and six Gargoyles! We're all sure we're screwed.

Druid wins the first intiative ... casts Deadfall ...
Titan rolls a natural one on the massive damage chart ...

INSTANT VICTORY! YAY! Free XP!
We get to call it a day in ten minutes!

My group was fighting some strange creatures from the Oriental Adventures handbook. They looked like half-people and held swords that did a butt-load of electric damage. I realised this after I ran up to three of them in a rage. At first, I asked for help, seeing as the others were having problems with just one on each, and I had three. However, the electric damage allowed evasion, so after making all of those saves and avoiding damage, I turned around and said "Actually, I think I'll be okay," as I cleaved into the second one, followed by a mass Snake's Swiftness from the artificer that put the third on ice. I still had a round of raging and my DM ruled that I had to do something crazy if I could not break my rage. I didn't, and hurled myself at the last one standing...

... who was at the bottom of a 70 foot cliff. Thus, the DM ruled that my character pounced from the cliff simply to land on the sucker (As getting over there and jumping took both my move actions). He rolled 7d6 for damage and rolled a ton of damage for who I landed on (Like, 23)... and 9 damage on me... It won us the fight. Throughout the whole thing, I took only about 27 HP of damage, mostly from my single failed reflex save, while others were reduced by half their HP and some were nearly critical.

We kick open a door and find ourselves face-to-face with a mind flayer. He cuts loose a mental blast and half the party falls. I sink my axe into him. Next round he cuts loose again with another mental blast and the rest of the party falls…except for me. Shouting a warcry to my gods I launch into him with two more axe hits, both for near full-damage criticals and drop his pasty purple ass. To ensure he was dead I stomped his head into pudding, and ever afterwards the PC's coat of arms was a mind flayer's head over a pair of crossed axes.

I would have to give this to Vicros, my assassin.

Mastered using dual daggers in combat, one being Striker (A vicious dagger which allowed him to turn the ability on or off at will and dealt acid damage) and the other Shrieker (which screamed and when it attacked, making the victim roll a will save DC14 or become shaken, successful save allowed immunity for 24 hours, as well as cold damage).

I basically made him an expert at the style of combat my party decided to call "Scary Movie Attack". Basically, I maxed Hide and Move Silently, aquired magic items to enchance these, my mobility, and my ability to conceal myself in plain sight or in the shadows, sneak my way over to a person, and leap out behind them, kill them or drag them into the darkness to be gorily mutilated, killed, and found later.

He was NOT a nice person. He was made CE because he had no problem in killing his targets and had no issues about killing painfully, slowly, and brutally for no personal or legally acceptable reason, albeit he only attacked what he thought to be wicked or evil people or anything that tried to kill or imprison him. Luckily that wasnm't too common, because he had a secret identity as the Ghost Mask, given because of the enchanted mask he wore while on his runs that basically hid him from any form of detection or divination short of a wish, limited wish, or miracle.

A level 10 party, yes there were 8 of us but we were fighting the BBEG, a balor with the monster of legend template. A wish had done away with it's DR so we could actually deal it damage but after a massive combat two of us are dead another three are bleeding out, two more have failed their saves vs fear and it's just my ranger staring this thing down. He's badly injured but he only needs one good hit to take me down and he's plainly lining up a charge on me.

With rapidshot I had three attacks before he was able to do that but it's still plainly got a fair chunk of HP left and the general feeling is that we're looking at a TPK on the final hurdle. Then I rolled my attacks and in plain view of everyone at the table got natural two twenties and a nineteen, I was using keen arrows. My confirm rolls: two more nineteens and an eighteen. 9d8 +3d6 + 9 damage later and my Ranger has just killed a CR circa 24 creature and saved the Western Coast of Faerun from demon invasion. I think it's fair to say that I've never been so proud and that happy dances were involved. :D

We were somewere near Calimshan in a tavern. We had just lost our camels and were looking for someplace to rest an get a bite to eat. My cleric convinced my friends Barbarian (who happened to have an affinity towards animals) that the half orc in the corner was eating the leg of his camel. In true barbaric diplomacy the barbarian went up to the half orc and grabbed the piece of meat that he was dining on. After the bar fight in which the barbarian used the half orc as an improvised weapon to attack the floor I was asked to resurect the camel. I took the piece of meat, told him to wait here, went around the corner, threw away the meat, and bought a new camel. The barbarian was confused considering that this camel was a lighter shade, a different sex, and had an extra hump. I told him that magic was a funny thing and he was satisfied.

Quite a few good ones spring to mind. Best one for one of my characters was David, my Goliath monk, drop-kicking a Hag off of a broom of flying above an effectively bottomless pit, retrieving the broom, rejoining the party and gifting the broom to the Mystic Theurge, played by my wife.

In another campaign, my wife, playing an Irda Diviner, successfully used her racial abilities and one humungous bluff check to successfully convince a Dwarven army that she was Moradin and the war they were trying to persue was against His will. Another member of our party successfully stole the airship the dwarves arrived on in the same encounter.

Then there was the final encounter between my Goliath's party and a cabal of 6 mages: CR16 encounter, our party was 6 characters of 9th level.

Our half-dragon fighter and Wu Jen ace their initiatives, and between them drop the two fastest-reacting mafes with acid breath and an area effect. the Mystic Theurge follows up with another area spell, the Goliath charges up and cleaves through a couple, even the rogue-sorceror Kender and rogue-bard human get off sneak attacks on the last two standing. One round massacre.

Two come to mind. The first was in my first ever session of DnD. First dungeon, first locked door. As it turns out, my first TRAPPED door. I also suffered my first critical, and my first character death as the arrow struck my fighter in the throat and killed him dead right there on the spot. -11 hit points.
That was years and years ago but I still loath going first when the party dosent have a rogue.

The second was with the same party but a new character, and my half-orc barbarian had made solid friends with the mischievous half-elf sorcerer. We were in a bar, and in said bar was a half elf bard hogging up all the ladies, and a table of ten or so half orcs. The barbarian (Krunkt) sat down with the orcs, the Sorcerer (Sanchez) sat down with the bard. Krunkt convinced the orcs that the bard was talking trash about them and thats why the ladies were giggling like that. Sanchez convinced the bard that he had heard the half orcs conspiring to take and ravage the ladies. A little trash talking later, and we had a bar brawl on our hands. Needless to say, the bard was slaughtered. Then Sanchez and Krunkt turned on the orcs and took care of them - now looking like heroes, we took the ladies into our rooms and the rest, as they say, is history.

Oh. Also we stole the bards decapitated head and used it to frame the BBEG when he confronted us in the middle of a town square to threaten us. He was trying to call us out and give us a time and place for our fight. Sanchez threw the head at him and yelled for a guard: "Guard, guard! That man has a decapitated head!!"

Good times. I have no idea if we got experience for that. Hm.

I'd have to say mine goes to Rowan, my halfling barbarian.

The party was going against what we thought to be some sort of wizard- he lived all alone in a palace of ice way up north, and had recently kidnapped his only friend's wife (a strange turn in behavior). Well we get there, and after swimming through a small cavern and into a larger one, we meet him face to face at last.
Everyone is kinda worried at this point, as we don't know what the heck he can do.
Well, everyone except Rowan. Taking his two dogs (Boedica and Cavall-he rides one of them), Rowan goes into rage and charges right at him.

And is promptly cut down by a horribly viscious cone of cold. Both the dogs are dead. Rowan is down to his last 10 HP and lying in two feet of water. Everyone takes their turn, and haven't caught up. It's Rowan's turn again. So what does he do?

Struggles to his feet, and charges again.

He actually makes the distance this time, even gets an attack off...and it's here we discover that the 'wizard' has damage reduction. A lot of it. Rowan's greatsword only does a point or two of damage, at best. The wizard, no longer concerned with Rowan in the slightest, laughed and moved on to the others, but the rest of the fight, Rowan did his darnedest to take him down...usually hovering just above 10 or 15 HP.
It was later revealed that the 'wizard' was some sort of monster-can't remember the name-but Rowan took a finger as a trophy.

Later in that same campaign, Rowan leapt off of 15/20 foot ledge and onto the back of an ogre...there was a grapple check to avoid being thrown off, and if I hadn't forgotten to add the strength bonus from his Rage, Rowan would've won...instead of being flung across the room and into a pen of dwarf slaves...

Good times.

Our party (ECL 15 or so) was entreated to speak with Bel, Lord of the First. We were on a mission to destroy Orcus, the Demon Prince of the Undead. Previously, we had recieved a message that Asmodaeus wished to speak with us at a later date.

Well, needless to say our reckless teasing and taunting ****** off Bel, so he decided to give us a good whoppin'. Mr. Asmodeaus, however, didn't think too highly of that course of action and sent a big ol' purple lightning bolt to sap some of Bel's power off. First round, our Monk delivers a few solid hits. Second round, my character (Elf Fighter/ Rogue/ Swash/ homebrew PrC) delivered his full attack, including a critical resulting in about 67 damage. Jokingly, we demanded a Massive Damage save on Bel's part. The DM obliged us, rolling a natural one and exclaiming "Whoopdy doo, I rolled a one and still passed!". Then realized his folly when he saw us all shaking our heads.

So, long story short, my character became lord of the First with a well-placed natural one.

It was a long time ago, and I think it was the Sinister Secret of Salt Marsh. It was the one where there was a smuggler hideout in the cliffs just outside of town. Low-level module. I was DM, and my good friend was playing a Wizard. The party caught the BBEG in the caves as he was about to escape in a boat. Dave's Wizard was knocked out of action immediately for a couple of rounds. The party fought and killed all the BBEG's minions. However, the BBEG cast his last spell, I think it was Color Spray, and knocked out the all the fighting party members. The next round, Dave's Wizards stands up to fight, but he is out of spells and so is the BBEG. They tied for initiative, rolled again and tied. They both look around at the ground and pick scimitars at the same time off the ground. They both charaged each other at the same time. Dave's Wizard just yelled "ARGGGGGGG!" as he charged. The Wizards clashed scimitars. They fought for several rounds, and Dave's Wizard finally cut down the BBEG with only 2 HP left. The Wizard single handedly saved the party without casting a spell.

I was in an evil campaign. It was my first long-running game. 3.0. I was playing a half-orc cleric / fighter wielding a greatsword and my group of 8 13th-18th level characters were sent to Heironeous' realm to steal his divine power for our demonic lord. I run up to Heironeous and swing my greatsword. Toss the dice and there, staring up at us, is a 20. I smile, and don't even bother rolling to confirm. I just roll damage, which was a total of 50+, just enough to damage him past his reduction. I was the only one in our party to hit a god. I was so proud...even if he did turn and drop me to one hit point on his turn...he was being merciful for some reason.

I later learned that the DM was thinking of offering me a sword that would turn me good and give me tons of power to turn on my friends, but he didn't think I'd take it. He didn't know me too well.
