Greetings, I rarely even take a glance at message boreds. So bare with me, this is a situation which I need as much help as I can get. For myself, and my group. We are currently with in a rather complex, and serious adventure. We have gone through allmost all of it, and now we are near the end. We are facing off with the avatar of Orcist(Spelling error?) Demon god of the undead. We are barely holding our own against him. I myself am playing a lvl 15 Human ranger Weilding the mace of St Cuthbergt, the rest of the group as stated Half celestrial, Rogue, Wizard Unseen Master lvl 17. Asamar, Winged, Were-tiger druidlvl 15. Dwarf Soul knifelvl14, and the rest are out of the picture (Dead  ). We've managed to clear a good deal of his servant horde, but he has even more at bay. At that our dungeon master is playing him out rather well, he's pummeling us left and right, and we are each barley able to hold our own. Himself, and a balor he summoned maintain a shroud of darkness around them which sets in place the Darkness enviromental setting. Then as they teleport about, striking at our party members. They use Powerword:stun in order to take out other members of our party.

At that there is a -HUGE- sized orb of darkness which is slowly making its way to us, which from what I can tell is teleporting creatures into the battlefeild. Or that is a seperate effect I know not. Yet we are with in the Avatars home plain, for myself nor the druid have any acess to our divine spells. (We rested eight hours, with luck trying to gain our spells back with no gain.) I need a sound strategy as to how we can down this horrid avatar, and his minions with out the entire party being destroyed.

Have you considered running away and regrouping? Perhaps coming back stronger, with a better idea of what your going to face? Don't think of it as a retreat, think of it as a tactical advance to the rear. Just remember, only your character is vital. Everyone else is expendable. :D

Good luck.

Sounds like your DM has devised a situation that you do not have resources to defeat. I know the feeling. Icosahedron's advice is good: get out while you can. Go elsewhere, and return when you have the resources and the knowledge to deal with this very powerful foe. Pick up a few levels seeking out homeboy's enemies and perhaps round up some powerful good-guy allies who know his tactics, terrain, and weaknesses.

Looks like you want to return with lots of anti-darkness (Daylight, Sunburst), anti-undead (Sunburst, Searing Light, Death Ward) & anti-summoning/teleportation (Dimensional Lock) items & powers at the ready. He's using a lot of magic to mess you up, so a few Anti-Magic Fields, Greater Dispel Magics, & Mordenkainen's Disjunctions would certainly help level the playing field.

Do you know what separate the fighter of the warrior, IMPROVISATION!!!

Try to lure your enemy into natural trap, like a rockslide or an avalanche

Don't let your enemy make the rules, try to make new friends, if Orcus is attacking you, he will kill everyone to make them zombies, so try telling ogres, trolls, and other monsters what danger they are occuring with, extraplanar allies would be great to, try to go to the plane of Celestia, it's a plane of great goodness, they will send you help, leonals, angels, everything you need, they live to fight evil.

Try getting stronger to, get better spell and things like that

And don't forget to find what is disturbating your deities so they can give you your divine spells

If you want a sound strategy, you would have to post more on what the surroundings and specifics are. By what I see of the situation I say that you should try to retreat and regroup. Being overwhelmed and outmatched only means that you should flee and fight another day! I couldn't tell you really tell you much unless you post more and gave more details.
Hope this helps!

Avatar of Orcus... Avatar of Orcus...
Hey! There's no Avatar of Orcus!

Aspect of Orcus... Hm, CR 9. You'd kill that guy easy.

Priest leader of Orcus... CR 17. A Tough fight, but nothing completely undefeatable.

Servants of Orcus... Ah, I can see you having trouble against his two servants, being CR's 17 & 18.

Orcus... CR 28... Plus, this guy was the only one who could have summoned balors so far. And the balor must be casting power word: stun. But I'd need a little more help on whether or not you're fighting the BoVD Orcus or not. Um, has the DM said simply that someone dies when he gets hit by the weapon of the "Avatar" and fails a fort save?

sounds like the DM has given Orcus some Divine Ranks or something, ChilliGod. Or maybe he's invented a house rule to give Demon Lords avatars, who knows. Whatever it is, it seems to be well beyond the party level.

I believe the correct term is "strategic redeployment". :D

Of course. I stand corrected.
