Hi

I`ve got a problem. We are playing with a nem Dm this game. We started out on level 4 and we currently are level 8. I have already made 2 new chars because the other two died. The problem is that our Dm doesn`t think of the concequenses of his actions. We have seen quite a few unbeatadle monsters.

My current character is an ECL8 Astral Deva and has 5hd now. We were going though the treasure and I took a +2 greatsword from it. Now it seems the Item is cursed. When I attack with it I will go into a sort of rage and will attack whatever is nearest to me and wil not stop fighting untill either I am Dead or everybody else in 30 feet of me. This includes my partymembers.

The problem is that I know the item is cused but my char doesn`t know that. So there isn`t a reasen for me to not attack the next time we have to kill a evil guy. I`m afraid my party will kill me to prevent me from killng the rest of the party. But I am playing a deva and therefore cannot be resurected.

I don`t want to die again and i`m tired of spending ohours on making a new char to see him die again. Please help me find a way out of this.

If you are willing to take the level loss, then your Deva can be resurected.

There is a spell in the Spell Compendium which can do that very thing.

I havn't got the details handy - and it's probably not OGL anyway - but it's food for thought.

That's way my group NEVER use any magical items until we IDENTIFIED it
Those anyone have any DISPEL MAGIC and REMOVE CURSE? Dispel magic on the Sword and then Remove curse from the Character and you'll see the mistake and throw the sword away before the magic in the sword would come back

well we did identify the item. That`s how we found out it was a +2 greatsword There was apparently a chance we woudn`t find the item was cused. It`s a beserking sword from the DMG. How it is possible that we didn`t see it I don`t know. Maybe the Dm made a mistake. As i pointed out it is his first time as a DM and in four levels three chars died. And two were mine.

Usually the IDENTIFY spell will give all the property of the item unless it is an artifact or it is CLEARY WRITTEN in the book
But remember that the master can FREELY create different magic items.
Remember: Dispel magic on the sword and remove curse on the PC and you can FREELY throw away the weapon. Each PC with a decent value to "knowledge(arcana)" should know it

I looked it up. According to the DMG, an identify spell only has 1% per casterlevel chance to reveal the real propertiet of the cursed item

Take it to a high ranking priest, and have him look at it. In one campain i had a curse dagger that was able to be cleased after handing it over to high priest.

Just a thought...

I'm playing in the same game as the thread starter

the actually problem is that her character actually doesn't know that the item is cursed. So when we hit our next encounter, she'll go berserk and will just attack the pc/monster nearest to her. which wil probaly lead to at least 1 dead PC.

Is there a way to avoid without relying on metagaming?

This is the item in question for reference:
Sword, Berserking: This item appears to have the characteristics of a +2 greatsword. However, whenever the sword is used in battle, its wielder goes berserk (gaining all the benefits and drawbacks of the barbarian’s rage ability). He attacks the nearest creature and continues to fight until unconscious or dead or until no living thing remains within 30 feet. Although many see this sword as a cursed object, others see it as a boon.
Moderate evocation; CL 8th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, rage, bestow curse; Price 17,500 gp.

Simple solution!

When he turns to hit the first person, everyone runs away! Now you are more than 30' away and he stops raging. Now you break the curse. Done.

Just treat your character like a frenzied berserk.
All the party can buy a wand (or scrolls if you're short on money) of calm emotions.
Then, when in a fight, just let the raging character go alone in melee, while the others attack with spells or ranged weapons.
Then, the bard/cleric uses the wand, and the killing machine turns into a party member, ready to be healed and colect his share of the loot. That way you win the die hard feat, the barbarian rage ability, and a +2 sword.
However, if the character passes the will save... well, you better hope the party is not on reach. You can also keep a scroll of wall of (something) to keep the raging astral daeva away from you, as plan B
