I have question for the more experienced pen and paper role players as I am primarily a console rpg gamer, In Baldur gate dark alliance to Yaesurun the moon elf necromancer used a spell called dark ribbon that used shadow damage, can any character in pen and paper D&D create a spell similar to that which attacks with shadow damage???

Also can you mix two elements to create a new type of spell class e.g.
force (like magic missle) & fire to create plasma ???

As me and a friend want make a new form of mage that uses different magic compared to other characters, also he will be neutral. :D

If the DM allows it.

The only rule about spell creation (apart from epic magic) is, "the DM decides" together with some rough guidlines how balanced spells look like.

Dark Allience isn't the best example of how the actual D&D rules work. Actually the only similarity with the D&D rules are the names.
Creating a new energy form has always the problem that nothing has resistence against this energy and so it must be weaker than the established energy types to stay balanced.
Personally, I would stay away from creating new energy types and just describe my spells different.

I agree with Derren...if the DM allows it. Usually, though, I have found that creating a new spell really isn't worth the time as WoTC has many books with a lot of spells to fill almost any need.
