Hi. I've come across some strange people when getting groups for D&D and would really rather not be in a situation like that again where the roleplaying is extreme. So, I was wondering if there was anyone who knew of a good way for just me and my fiance to play D&D together without anyone else. We really don't have schedule where we could play with a group and I want to avoid the weird guys. If there's a way for just us to do small encounters here and there, that would be awesome.

My roommate and I just started a campaign like this. Basically the campaign has no mega-plot... the basic story is that he is a bard; a drifter looking to travel from city to city, telling stories and learning new ones, helping out when needed. I play a beguiler, who acts as his carrying mule when travelling to a city. When our characters arrive at a new city, they split up, and see who can have a more interesting adventure in the city. My roommate DMs my beguiler's adventures, and I DM his bard's. This way we have little interesting things happen in one city. It's a neat way to play.

I used to have a sizeable group years ago (anything up to 8 players plus an assistant DM at times) though many of them drifted away so quite often most of the quests were simple DM plus 2 players in the last few years I was playing before we all went our seprate ways. it wasn't uncommon for us to have only one player at times in which case we would play simple adventures (usually a simple small dungeon crawl) with only a few small encounters that a PC (plus a NPC run by the DM) can handle with little or no challenge.

the other posibility is you can have the player to play two charicters and the DM to play one or two charicters to make up the numbers for a full sized adventure party though this can lead to a bit of stress as everyone has to remember a lot of extra numbers and stats.

then you have the posibility of trying to get a few close friends or family members in to play (especially if you have children or even neices/nephews before they are brainwashed by computer games lol)

I work at a local Boy Scout camp, and female staff can't be in the same tents as the male staff, nor a small cabin, thus, we get small groups together at the pool or we will build a small fire in the fire ring in the staff quarters area and play. Since the guys are mostly off in a cabin playing, the few of us left must make 2 players or just have small or solo encounters and quests.

OPTION 1- just have an npc and a pc doing small adventures with easier monsters..

option 2- make multiple pcs for the both of you

option 3- put up with the weird guys

Feel free to PM me, i may come up with better ideas later :P

happy adventuring and good luck with the relationship ^_^

This is in fact, quite a common way to play.

You'll find the answers to many of your questions in these two threads:

I'm really intrigued to find out what you mean by "Extreme Roleplaying."

Could you give some concrete examples?

Now you've done it. I was wondering the very same thing, but refrained from asking to avoid the possibility of having to wash my brain in bleach.

I'm a bit scared of what we're about to find out....

The 'lessons from DMing with my GF' thread is probably one of the best resources on this topic out there. I recommend it.

My fiance and I have done sessions like this. We first got into D&D playing the board game together and enjoyed it so much that we started playing the 'proper' game. Now we're in a bigger group so the one-on-one sessions are restricted to when a character somehow gets seperated from the main party, which can be interesting.
I've always thought that groups with only two or three PCs are the best. It means everyone can 'enjoy the spotlight' more often and I find it easier to work and roleplay together.
Although, it does mean you miss out on the whole epic battle thing: when five or six PCs have to fight to near death to rid themselves of a particularly nasty monster...

You must read KJW's analysis of two-player D&D (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=553739), it's fantastic. (Same advice as posted above.)

It's so fantastic, as a matter of fact, that the thread is over 400 posts long. Believe me, if you want to play with one player and one DM, especially if those two people are spouses or the equivalent, you'll want to go look.

Extreme roleplaying - always find it hard to retain my dice whilst bungeeing...
