I want to know if there is any way to play D&d on the net something like a web site but not a video game

Yeah, just use any chat prog for dialog, passing info around or whatever. Lack of a grid can be a pain in the posterior, but there are other progs that can do that (though I'm not familiar with 'em so someone else will need to provide that info).

As for doing the rolling thing publicly to keep everyone honest, if you use mIRC these can be quite helpful: mIRC dicebot scripts (http://richards.sdf1.org/dice/).

www.mirc.com

Use that, and see if you can get a dicebot somehow that displays on mIRC.

Or you can use AIM, but mIRC is much more user-friendly; you can change your chat name on the fly (for getting 'into' character or discreetly announcing you need to make a quick Mountain Dew run or something. DMs can also use this to better distinguish themselves from NPCs in-game) and once you register a room (which costs nada), the person who does so always has the power to boot unwanted people (trollers and the like, which does happen but can be avoided)

:D Now someone just needs to link to a free grid program and he's set.

I'm getting prepared to start an over-the-Internet game with a slightly different approach. Here it is.

First, I will be setting up a table in my living room with miniatures and a battlemat.

Over that, I will be mounting a USB Vid-Cam from the ceiling, pointing down at the table.

I will then broadcast that from my computer.

Following that, people will connect using a ventrilo (voice chat) program I have so that they can all talk in real time. (Ventrilo for eight people or less is free)

As for me, I will have a microphone in the living room with a good reception (I'll have to purchase one) and a keyboard with a weight on the transmit key so it always transmits. I will turn it off if I ever need to.

The stickiest part of all of this is the rolling of the dice.

And so, as a programmer, I plan on making an interface that can do two things:

First: It will capture your basic information whenever I need it, like skills and saves, etc.

Second: It will connect to me and when you want to roll for attacks etc, you plug in the appropriate roll method and hit Roll. It rolls and displays the results for all the players to see.

The server, which will be my computer, will be the one doing the actual rolling.

It will probably be two months or so before I get all this started.

Gametable, my favorite. (http://gametable.galactanet.com/) It's minimalistic and easy-to-use. It has a real vestigal chat/dice feature too, but I greatly prefer IRC for that sort of thing.

OpenRPG is an older but frequently updated and fixed Online Tabletop RPG program. It has maps, chat features, room administration, dice, and content areas where you can put character sheets in the program and send them to your DM so you all have a copy or just click the skill or attack of your character to have it display in the chat area. Very good program; I use it and reccomend it. It runs on Python and should be compatible with multiple operating systems.

Wow. This makes a compelling argument to scrap my overhead Vid-Cam idea....

I tried using it and couldn't get even basic functionality out of it.

Is there a tutorial out there somewhere?

This links to a tutorial and FAQ on the program. If you are stuck at any parts I've installed it enough, just ask me in a PM or on this thread.

Let me second openRPG. It does take some getting used to. As a matter of fact, I have an online game in an hour...using openRPG.
