| Crash16912-12-05, 12:45 AM | Okay our DM is strictly against min/maxing and definately will not allow me to take char dips for anything! With that said, I've been trying to work on a dagger Thrower build. Once I started thinking about it I instantly thought of Fighter2/rogue3/swash3/master thrower/invisible blade.. Then I realize what I fool I am for thinking of such a min/maxed build. So the plan so far is to take two weapon fighting feats, point blank shot, far shot, precise shot.. and maybe like ranged disarm. I first off didn't really care about sneak attacking.. I wanted to go Straight fighter5/master thrower5.. But then after looking at it for a while I realized how beneficial sneak attack would be with the special thrown weapon trick, Palm Throw. I'd be throwing a crazy amount of daggers with palm throw and TWF.. and the daggers would be adding insane sneak attack damage. So I was wondering if anyone could help me with a build that isn't min/maxed.. that would be actually good for throwing daggers... |
| Dragonsblood12-12-05, 12:57 AM | Rogue/Fighter/MT is perfectly fine. Rogue/MT can work too but you won't have much freedom with feats, though you get more sneak damage. Stick to core and complete series feats only and I wouldn't consider these min/maxed combos at all. |
| AcidAngel12-12-05, 03:12 AM | I have tried this build and this is what I came up with, just using core, Rogue/Fighter. Good number of skills and feats plus sneak attack damage. Rogue first: lots of skills, sneak attack damage Fighter first: BAB +1, two starting feats (3 if human) Feats: Quick Draw (3.0 a must, 3.5 BAB +1 allows you to draw a weapon as a free action) Two weapon fighting (and related feats) precise shot, pointblank shot, rapid shot (and other bow/shot related feats) weapon focus/specialization (a must) I never really got to finish playing the character (halfling) This build can also be pretty deadly with a short bow and two short swords. (definite back up weapons) When you have the gold, upgrades like keen, returning and a +# bonus |
| Kintara12-12-05, 03:14 AM | Hmm, my favorite build was a Halfling Paragon 3/Fighter 12/Master Thrower 5. Sneak Attack is nice, but sometimes it's hard to set up, and it's completely ineffective on occasion. The cool thing about going with Fighter 12 is that you can pick up Greater Weapon Specialization, which adds a decent amount of damage. Halfling Paragon (from Unearthed Arcana) gives you another bonus to damage with thrown weapons, and a nice bonus to Dex. The fun thing with this build is that you WILL hit with EVERY dagger, and you'll be hitting with a lot of them. Of course, it can cost quite a bit of gold to have a full set of +1 returning daggers. I believe there's an item in the Player's Guide to Faerun that adds the Returning property to any weapon you're holding. Oh, and remember to take Trip Shot (or whatever it's called) from Master Thrower. With your Dex score you'll be set to trip everyone, and the best thing about it is that it's free with each attack. Oh, and try to get someone to play a Bard. Think about how much damage you can do with a nice Inspire Courage on. ;) Oh, and as for Sneak Attack, unfortunately, here's the eratta: Page 58: Master Thrower’s Thrown Weapon Trick (class feature) The master thrower’s palm throw ability counts as a volley attack, and only one instance of precision-based damage applies to the attack roll.So heads up. ;) |
| Kes Alanadel12-12-05, 12:34 PM | Another way you could build it is to go with a Scout/Fighter. Same skill points as a rogue, trapfinding, and the skirmish damage is applied everytime you move at least 10 feet, instead of sneak attack which is not as easy to get. The Scout also has other class skills that would benefit a throwing character (and the fast movement helps the halfling emensly :D ). ~Kes |
| Lincoln Hills12-12-05, 01:09 PM | Wrong board for this sort of stuff. |
| Kes Alanadel12-12-05, 02:23 PM | Wrong board for this sort of stuff. Actually it isn't :). This board is for help in creating characters as well. The CharOp boards are for maximizing the potential of your character, so a question like this is just as appropriate here as it would be there, depending on what exactly the OP is asking for :). Plus this OP stated that their DM specifically dislikes min/maxing. Just my 2 coppers, ~Kes |
| Purkake12-12-05, 02:36 PM | Feats: Quick Draw (3.0 a must, 3.5 BAB +1 allows you to draw a weapon as a free action) Two weapon fighting (and related feats) precise shot, pointblank shot, rapid shot (and other bow/shot related feats) weapon focus/specialization (a must) Actually a +1 BAB only allows you to draw a weapon during a move action. you still need quickdraw, but you can now hold quite a few of them daggers in your hand, redy to be thrown. |
| Crash16912-13-05, 01:18 AM | Wow, thanks everyone... I would have posted this on the Character optimization boards but they just rip chars to shreds.. the min/max like crazy.. and I'm sure that most of my replies would be.. "You should go fighter2/rogue3/swash3/barb1/masterthrower/invisibleblade" I hate that crap.. It would be really hard to RP a char like that in our Campaigns. When we change classes we have to have reason to in character. It's sort of like metagaming.. "I'm gonna go and roam the wilds alone an try to survive with my hunter instinct for a while just so I can get rage" As far as my character goes, I pretty much have it planned out.. But I'm not sure whether I should be human or halfling. The extra human feat is definately Tempting, but so is the extra dexterity I'd be getting for being a halfling. I'm going to need, Improved initiative, Two weapon fighting, Weapon focus (dagger), point blank shot, weapon specialization, Rapid shot (I'm not so sure about this one.. Can I shoot 4 daggers with rapid shot using two weapon fighting?) Ranged disarm, Ranged trip, improved two weapon fighting. Hmm.. So I got the statistic part of the character pretty much done.. And I still have to think of a backround.. I'm pretty sure I'd be some sort of renegade bounty hunter.. that sounds cool.. and it's different than what I usually play. |
| Kintara12-13-05, 01:34 AM | I'd really consider skipping Ranged Trip, and going with Trip Shot from Master Thrower. It's simply a great ability. What have you decided to go with? My vote is for halfling, obviously. ;) Seriously, Halfling Paragon (http://d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/racialParagonClasses.htm#halflingParagon ) is a good way to go, and easy to roleplay and justify. |
| Crash16912-13-05, 01:50 AM | oops, I meant to say Trip shot from master thrower. Oh umm.. If a halfling uses the trip shot trick shot.. does he get a -4 from his size? |
| Purkake12-13-05, 07:42 AM | Don't forget quickdraw ;);) |
| Kes Alanadel12-13-05, 09:33 AM | You're right, the extra feat and skill point from being human is good, but if you go halfling, you get the dex modifier, +1 to all attacks, and an extra +1 to your attack when throwing :). I am currently playing a human archer (fighter) and am going to multiclass her into scout. Those two classes just seem to fit much better together than rogue/fighter to me, and from a roleplaying point, easier to find a mentor/trainer for a scout than it would for a rogue. Plus the scout has the same BAB progression as a fighter does. ~Kes |
| xantan12-13-05, 08:17 PM | This is the kind of charcter i play as often as possible! so i should know the decent build. Race: if you want the extra feats definetly go human, any other choices would definetly have to be into races that either raise wisdom (you'll see), dex or give you darkvision. - the darkvision may sound stupid but the build i make involves a lot of stealth and my DM's campaigns usually leads underground.. but i digrese(sp) Class: CoA's Ninja, her sudden strike may not be as versatile as a sneak attack but if you can go invisible often enough it won't matter. in my past builds enemies usually don't live long enough for you too run out. as well here is the no brainer, master thrower. the palm toss ability only gives SuSt to each attack but with the right abilities it won't matter. Build: ninja X/ master thrower X the amount of levels you pump into each of these is dependentt on you. feats: quickdraw may seem neccesary but if you can go without, you get it as a bonus freat in your first level of MT. iy you want it it's still really worth it ( i still praise it every time i attack) point blanck shot, rapid shot are both very much needed. if your going for the crazy thrower who turns his enemies into pincushions you will not have lived untill you get these. the rest is fairly open-ended and depends on what you want them to be able to do. but always remember that your ki pool is there to be used so don't be shy about going invisible often. also stay away from melle, this build is fairly fragile, lol. if i missed something say so |
| Crash16912-13-05, 08:56 PM | I doubt I can get the amount of feats I want being a ninja. I'm also going to want my character to do fairly well in melee. I was thinking of having some wrist daggers ready for when people come up close. If I play a halfling, I really wont be very mobile. I'll have to fight melee pretty often. The type of character I'm making has to be fearless.. I don't want to hide in the shadows and shoot daggers.. I want to be out in the open, ready for anything! I hope to make my character seem like a very skilled Fighter, doing amazing weapon feats like tripping/disarming people before the fight even starts. I've also jotted down a bunch of feats that would prove helpful in this type of build.. I'm still not sure of which ones to pick.. but here they are: Two weapon fighting, point blank shot, weapon focus, far shot, precise shot, weapon finesse, weapon specialization, ranged disarm, quick draw, dodge, mobility, shot on the run, ranged pin, throw anything, brutal throw, power throw, snatch arrows, deflect arrows.. Besides feats.. I also looked at the trick shots from the class Master thrower.. The ones that catch my eye are: Double Toss, Trip shot, Two with one blow. The strategy would be to double toss or rapid shot a bunch of daggers to attempt to trip as many foes possible. I am aware that this will not be a high damage character, but I really don't care much for it. I'm really just making this character for Roleplaying and style. I also looked at the class Exotic Weapon Master and found a couple of things that catch my eye. I know that daggers are not exotic weapons.. but I'm sure I can get my DM to stretch the boundaries of the prestige class. I want my character to be a master of his weapon. Here are the abilities I saw and wanted: Close Quarters ranged combat and Show Off. I'm still not sure of what feats to take.. I still need to know If I can throw 4 daggers with rapid shot and Two weapon fighting. Thanks! |
| InfernalSlave12-13-05, 09:00 PM | personally, i think a fighter/rogue/wisperknife(RoW) is the way to go with thrown weapons. |
| Worguron12-13-05, 10:56 PM | Wow, thanks everyone... If you are worried about that one feat, be a StrongHeart Halfling from the Forgotten Realms. They get a bonus feat like a human. . . . I am not sure of the other exact stats, but yeah. |
| Crash16912-14-05, 01:00 AM | If you are worried about that one feat, be a StrongHeart Halfling from the Forgotten Realms. They get a bonus feat like a human. . . . I am not sure of the other exact stats, but yeah. Awesome, I just checked the Strongheart Halfling and it made the decision of Race so much easier. I'm definately going to go halfling now. This way I get the bonus feat and the +2 Dex I wanted. I'm still stuck on the feats. We're starting this campaign at level 1, but I like to be prepared. Since we've never passed 10th level, the build I have so far is for 10 levels. Fighter 6 / Master Thrower 4 Stats are somehting like.... Str 15, Dex19, con16, int12, wis9, cha13 (before ability score boosts) By 9th level I should have 9 feats. Here is a list of 11 feats I definately would like to have: 1)Two Weapon Fighting, 2)weapon focus, 3)point blank shot, 4)far shot, 5)precise shot, 6)quick draw, 7)improved initiative, 8)weapon finesse, 9)ranged disarm, 10)rapid shot, 11)Improved Two Weapon fighting. Now I just have to figure out the order to get them in. Any Ideas? |
| Kintara12-14-05, 02:14 AM | Hmm, personally, I think I'd go with Weak Spot instead of Double Toss. The great thing about Weak Spot is that you'll never miss with your attacks. Here's a build that I made a while back: 1 HalflingParagon1 Point Blank Shot 2 HalflingParagon2 3 HalflingParagon3 Precise Shot 4 Fighter1 WF (Dagger) 5 Fighter2 TWF 6 Fighter3 Far Shot 7 Master Thrower1 Trick: Palm Throw, Quick Draw 8 Fighter4 WS (Dagger) 9 Master Thrower2 Rapid Shot 10 Master Thrower3 Trick: Trip Shot 11 Master Thrower4 Snatch Arrows 12 Master Thrower5 Trick: Weak Spot, Improved Critical, ImpTWF 13 Fighter5 14 Fighter6 GrTWF 15 Fighter7 16 Fighter8 GrWF (Dagger) 17 Fighter9 18 Fighter10 [Improved Precise Shot?], [Weapon Finesse?]/[Exotic Armor Prof.: Gnome Twist Cloth?] 19 Fighter11 20 Fighter12 GrWS (Dagger) Full Attack +19/+19/+19/+14/+14/+9/+9/+4, not including the Dex Bonus (which should be in the 30s by level 20) and Point Blank Shot. That's 16 daggers doing 1d3+6 damage, 1d3+7 with Point Blank Shot, not counting any magic bonuses from the weapons. [s]Yes, you can use Two with One Blow with Rapid Shot, and any other extra attack. |
| Crash16912-14-05, 10:52 AM | I looked a the FAQ on the skills and feats page.. and it says you can only use rapid shot to get 1 extra attack per round.. so with TWF it would be 3 attacks. Are you getting the 16 daggers with palm throw? or??? |
| Kintara12-14-05, 11:54 AM | I looked a the FAQ on the skills and feats page.. and it says you can only use rapid shot to get 1 extra attack per round.. so with TWF it would be 3 attacks. Are you getting the 16 daggers with palm throw? or???Yes, how else? :) Oops, I think I know where the confusion is. Forget that last sentence (I didn't read your question carefully enough). Yes, you're right that Rapid Shot and TWF add up to 3 attacks total. Rapid shot doesn't add to each hand. So, it's +19(Rapid)/+19(Primary)/+19(Off)/+14(Pri)/+14(Off)/+9(Pri)/+9(Off)/+4(Pri). |
| Crash16912-14-05, 07:53 PM | I just have questions about the 16 daggers.... Thats one hell of a lot of daggers to be throwing in one round... How the hell would you be able to hold that many ready for throwing.. and with quick draw.. and palm throw.. you would have to palm 2 daggers in 1 draw.. It just seems very so Impossible to do! Would you happen to have a way of doing this every round? When I think about it.. I really don't see somebody throwing that many daggers in 6 seconds.. a round is 6 seconds right? I'd think it would be possible with some kind of Item of minor creation that just keeps pumping daggers into your hands, but I don't see it happening any other way. Even if the daggers are returning.. Would you catch each one and the sheath it back? Can you make them return straight to their sheaths..? I'm sure this has already been debated to bits somewhere else on the forums. |
| Kintara12-14-05, 09:45 PM | Keep in mind that that's a twentieth level character. How do any characters of that level do the things they do? How does even a reasonably low level barbarian with Great Cleave kill eight solidiers in one attack? It's possible for a character like that to throw that many daggers because he's superhuman, by our standards. A fighter of that level could kill regiments of first level Warrior infantry without a problem. This one is no exception. I imagine that he has the daggers strapped to his body, and he tosses them out two at a time, simultaneously, with both hands. Four daggers at once. Each motion has been trained for so long that there is no wasted movement. Not only does he throw sixteen of them in a round, but he throws them instinctively at the most vulnerable spots on his enemies' bodies in such a way to make them fall to the ground as if he had swung his legs under them. The daggers do as much damage as a swing from a greataxe. He could easily hit a butterfly from a hundred feet away. And for fun, he can pluck arrows from flight with a free hand. As for how returning weapons work as far as being ready to throw again, I figure he catches them and slips them between his fingers, two at once, and throws them out again like that in following rounds, undulating the daggers like coins between his fingers as he flicks the top ones with his thumb and pointer. Or perhaps he throws them into the air, and plucks and tosses them as they fall. Is that a nigh impossible trick of sleight of hand? Sure. But he also likely has a 30 Dexterity by this point, and Sleight of Hand is a prerequisite for Master Thrower. ;) |
| Crash16912-14-05, 10:16 PM | Yep, I'm convinced.. Your description was amazing.. and thats exactly what I want my character to be like! Have you ever made it to 20th level with any of your characters? Like I said before, I've only made it to 10th level.. and I was using a fighter5/kensai5. Oh and thanks for all the replies Kintara :D |
| Kintara12-14-05, 10:52 PM | Hmm, I've never made it all the way to level twenty, but I got pretty far in a really high-powered game with the Forgotten Realms adventure City of the Spider Queen. He was a gestalt fighter/druid staff fighter. He got instakilled by the Big Bad at the very end of the game, but he was pretty darn tough. :) Have some fun describing your character's style. I think dagger fighters like this are inherently on the flashy side. I think you'd fight like that because you want to show off, deep down. ;) Maybe even make him, or her, a bit of a braggart. :D |
| Crash16912-15-05, 11:03 PM | Our first Quest was yesterday, so I had to have the character done. I ended up going with the halfling paragon, with point blank shot and precise shot, as my first level feats. I got the Extra feat from being a Strongheart halfling. So yea, so far I'm loving it! I get like +8 to my attack at first level! I never miss! of course the damage could be a little better, but I'm loving it so far. People try to put me down cause I'm a halfling, but I mean business, and if you insult me, you'll be feelin' me blades! The whole quest, we fought about 4 or 5 different encounters, against hobgoblins, goblins, NPC party and a CR 3 Centaur!. It's off to a gerat start, and I'm really loving the way the character works ! |
| Kintara12-16-05, 12:39 AM | Hey, that's great! Be sure to tell me how it goes. Your damage should improve a bit next level with Thrown Weapon Mastery. :) Damage can be troubling with this character, at times. Be sure to carry daggers that can puncture DR. Adamantine is pricey, but cold iron and silver are a bit easier. Aligning lots of daggers can be a pain. The best solution I could come up with is to take Sanctify Martial Strike, an Exalted feat from the Book of Exalted Deeds. It requires a Cha 15, though. A set of +1 holy daggers would be cool, but what a price tag.... And that's if you can use that magic item from the Player's Guide to Faerun that can save you the expense of making them all returning. But then once you get Trip Shot you can still mess everyone up nicely just by hitting them. :) Make everyone in the room bow to the halfling! :D |
| Crash16912-16-05, 01:24 AM | Ahh yes! don't worry I will be sure to tell you how I fair a few levels from now. I was also wondering what book those different metals like adamantine and cold iron are in. I already though about damage reduction.. and I hadn't a clue what I was going to do. Thanks for the tip! |

| Kintara12-16-05, 02:26 AM | Ahh yes! don't worry I will be sure to tell you how I fair a few levels from now. I was also wondering what book those different metals like adamantine and cold iron are in. I already though about damage reduction.. and I hadn't a clue what I was going to do. Thanks for the tip! They are talked about in the Dungeon Master's Guide. It should be pretty easy to have sets of non-magical daggers made out of cold iron or silver. Adamantine is going to be expensive, though, so any adamantine daggers will probably be a part of your magical arsenal. You'll probably want at least two adamantine daggers so that you can make at least one volley each round (probably as a standard attack action). Aligning your daggers Good might be tricky. I'd say that your best option is to get them a +1 enhancement that aligns your weapon. I believe there are two options. One of them does extra damage vs. undead (check the undead monster book), and the other confirms crits against evil creatures (check the Book of Exalted Deeds, if you got it), in addition to aligning your weapon Good. Then you enhance your adamantine daggers with it, maybe a couple of cold iron or silver daggers, and any other daggers that you can afford it for. Sanctify Martial Strike is easier and probably harder in its own way too. You need to be really Goody Goody to take and keep Exalted feats, and you need a Cha 15 to take Sanctify Martial Strike in particular. -- Stranger, I think that's pretty cool. When I picture this character, actually, I can't help but think of the dagger throwing assassin in Desperado. His name in the movie is Navajas, which means "Knives." ;) |

Halflings are the best race to play by far. There role play is great. Go Halfling barbarian, and tell me it's not the best combo you ever played... |

| Crash16912-16-05, 10:45 AM | Damn, I'm going to be getting a hell of a lot of disadvantages on Abilities like Ranged Disarm and Trip Shot. I think it's like, if I try to disarm a medium creature with a Two handed weapon, they get +8 to their attack bonus to keep their weapon because of their size and weapon, and I get -4 for size, and a -4 for using a light weapon. As for trip shot, it isn't so bad, They only get a +4 for their size, while I'll be getting a +4 also.. and Since my Dex should be rediculously high by then, I'm not so worried. I'm really thinking about dropping the ranged disarm feat out of the build.. as good as it may be, I don't see my little daggers disarming people too often. |
| Kintara12-16-05, 02:38 PM | Hmm, I found another possible solution for aligning your weapons. The Planar Handbook has a fighter substitution level for level 8 that allows the fighter to align his weapons as he sees fit. Of course, that'll take some time to get to.... Anyway, yeah. Ranged Disarm might be a little difficult to use |
| Crash16912-17-05, 01:36 AM | Hummm, I'll be sure to check that out whenever I have access to the book. I think I'm going to end up getting those gauntlets you mentioned earlier. We usually play semi-low gold campaigns though, so it'll take me a while to actually get 10000gp. hahah, my DM's a jerk. In the first quest, he had us do a little mercenary job that involved taking care of a patrol group so that merchants can move Illegal Shipments. We fooled the patrol into letting us use their map to try and find out where the city we were coming from was. The leader of their group agreed to show us the map. He came in close, and we attacked and killed him and the rest of his group. We search the bodies, and guess what I find? A regualr sized +1 dagger :(. Why couldn't it be a Small sized +1 dagger! or No dagger at all! I swear, he's trying to make me regret taking a halfling or something, it was such a tease. I was like "OH nice! a +1 weapon first level!" then I realized that I use different sized daggers than others. DAMN TEASE! |

| Crash16912-17-05, 05:25 PM | I know it makes perfect sense for it to be a regular sized dagger, but I'm sure my dm just put it there to tease me. He could have easily made it a +1 longsword instead, or nothing for that fact! I'm sure it was some type of subliminal message! It's going to suck findinf armor and weapons and stuff that will never suit my size :( |

Or was he even using the dagger?? Does your dm role the treasure randomly after a battle (I hope he doesn’t). If it's randomly there is a good chance you'll find something small. . . But I hope he roles it before, for the sake of "if the NPC had it on him, why the hell wasn’t he using it?"... And why would your dm care if you make a small character?? Nothing more fun then playing a small character... |
