Damage reduction is a weird thing, but in terms of a critical, it's quite simple. Always after.

EG:
If a fighter uses a non-magical longsword and does 10 damage before a critical against a creature with DR 5/magic, then his critical would be 20 damage and the creature would still take 15.

Your example is correct, except that remember when you crit you roll damage multiple times, you don't just roll once and multiply.

meh. Many, many DMs don't bother with the time multiple rolls takes. They call it a "damage multiplier" for a reason... ;)

Damage Reduction is a good feature to have, however make sure u have the right Damage reduction u are applying it to. Example if it says Good/Silver the damage reduction will apply to all weapons or damage save a good aligned weapon thats made of silver. Personaly I dont like how they changed the Damage reduction from 3. to 3.5 but hey its how they have it so whatever.

Just as long as you ascribe to one or the other and stick with it.

Offically, the rules say to roll multiple times. Over a long period of time, either method will produce roughly the same results.

This is only true if the damage reduction is #/good and silver. If the damage reduction is #/good or silver, a good weapon or a silver weapon will do it, it needn't be both.
