| Dick Dastardly07-03-05, 02:21 PM | i had a character i spent ages and ages making and fleshing out a back story for, and in the first session i can use him in he is killed by a lucky hit by an ogre npc, which was my fault really for getting too close. but anyway he is a level 4 rogue that is based around killing silently, hoping to go assasin. the ogre was slaughtering the part and i was just going in to flank, sneak attack then next chance i get tumble out, but i hit him and he hit me killing me outright. i want to bring him back, ecause by a strange series of events i am now dm. his back story was pretty much that he was born into a poor fammily, and was kinda left to the side, not really noticed by his parents, or ignored, he could never work out which, but one day his dad a farmer came home drunk, and was going to beat my character, named murdock carter, murdock was tired of this, and would stand it no longer, so he killed his father by falling down the stairs and using a candle stick, but anyway he fled his horrified mother and younger brother. he took to theivery but found more money lay in contract killings, and was inspired by watching an assasin, move in on his prey one night while murdock was out trying to rob a local merchant. but anyway his brother who is now a paladin is reputedly hunting him down. to exact punishment for killing the inocent. so now he is dead. left stapled to a tree in the woods by a large dagger through his throat. i was thinking his brother the pladin, might catch up to him, and decide to take him back to a cleric or wizard or someone that can resurect him, to resurect him so the paladin can face him in mortal combat and kill him after a rousing speach so he knows he died as peneace for his crimes. this would bring him back and i would need to roleplay out the fight. my question is this is this a reasonable idea? some other helpfull info i would just like to know he is alive somewhere even if i never play him again. he is chaotic evil his brother is lawfull good as is the norm with paladins he will only drink milk :D and his name is murdock carter, his brothers name is tyrone carter. |

| Dick Dastardly07-03-05, 03:38 PM | no thats not it, i dont want to play him while i am dm. i just want him alive cos i spent so much time on him, even if he is never used again. its just nice to know he is alive. sorry if my previous post was worded badly. |

If the answer is no, don't do this. Why would the Paladin bring him back? If he knows that your rogue was evil, the rogue has already paid for his sins with his life. No need to bother, his death proves the error of his ways. If he brings him back because he's familiy, bringing him back and *then* fighting him to the dead, that Paladin should probably reconsider his choice of career. (In a fair match you know who'll probably win, if the rogue isn't extremely lucky. This fight is nothing but an noble form of execution and how lawfull good would you consider bringing somebody back from the dead to execute him again? And since the Paladin can't do it on his own he'll need to convince a member of his church -and himself- that his reasons are just. ) Again, I would advice: don't do this. Find another way to bring him back if it's really what you wish. Has he some important allies (4th level... I doubt it, but who knows he might have made some good contacts) that would consider him more usefull alive? (They would probably insist he'd pay this debt to them with service). I know it hurts, I had a NE rogue going spymaster or zhentarim spy (infiltrating Cormyr and trying to win the favour of Azoun the IV) with a 10 page background story. She was killed in the 3rd session by my own stupidity. Rogues - especially evil ones- shouldn't stay behind while the rest of the group ran (We'll do ranged attacks and cast spell, you keep those XYZ at bay. Well, I shouldn't have told them I was a good fighter in order to join the group, I guess. Lying can be your death...). Well, my DM offered me the chance to plea to the god I had chosen. If he thought I'd further his cause I'd get a second chance... Well, since we were playing a faerun campaign and my god was Cyric and neither he nor my superiors tolerated failure in a mission I didn't succeed... |
| Yruc07-04-05, 11:25 AM | The pally wouldn't want to bring back someone fromt he dead just so he could kill them again.... Though he *might* bring his brother back to see if he could give him another chance at good and then if that didn't work, then send him back to the eternal slumber. Though as everyone else here says: "advise against returning said player from death. It will give you players the impression that, 1) death doesn't matter the DM will save us. 2) This character is more important than what we do, so it dosesn't matter if we start doing xxx (not going along with plot, killing random NPCs, etc) Just save the character sheets and some other game bring it and use if the DM there approves... |
| Lord Schpungus07-04-05, 12:38 PM | If he'll never, ever, ever show up in the game you're DMing, and you just want the satisfaction of knowing he's alive inside your head, just do it. Pretend that he existed, and died, and now he's alive again. I don't see the problem. |
| Shaken, not Stunned07-04-05, 12:54 PM | Why? Whats the point? Look at it like this. There are an infinite number of D&D timelines and worlds. Just because he died in this timeline doesn't mean he has died in all timelines. This is so, so far away from your job as a DM that I don't even want to try to tell you what you should do. Damn. Look, you, as a DM, are supposed to make the players look heroic, big, important. You should keep the spotlight on them for the most part. An occasional departure from them is ok, so long as it furthers the story and puts them in their place a little. You DO NOT want to use a character they know to have been used by you as a PC, because they will feel (and will be correct in feeling) that you are elevating your PC above their own unfairly. Leave this instance of your character dead. |
