At the moment, I'm playing a heavilly modified Sunless Citadel campaign, (Example: It has beholders) and the party is kind of struggling. our sunless citadel is right above the underdark, so naturally some pretty nasty stuff moved in. At the moment, our level two party has just escaped from a superpowered Snig The Axe, (I don't care about the cost. I am NOT being killed by Snig.) and ended the session with the promise of something nasty next time. Luckily, the DM was really looking forward to it and ended up telling two of the players what was going to happen with no provocation. It seems Snig is running a slavers' operation, and there are many more troops outside. So far we know Ninja Mcninjerton can make it out with ghost step, but that leaves me, (Gnome Sorceror 3) Tordek the fighter, and Arianna the cleric looking mighty screwed. He also told us the people buying us would either be A: Drow, (Eh, they're all CG now...) B: Mind Flayers, (A certain template springs to mind) C: A Lich, (He mentioned it would be an undead-heavy Campaign... Never thought we'd be the undead...) or D: Something not nearly as bad. He said he would roll a d4 to determine the result, but he could be toying with us. (As he's known to do) The slavers are also quite likely to accompany the goblins during this encounter. We're not meant to win this one, he said it was a plot hook... However, he's great at thinking on the fly and would support any attempt to escape. The room in question has three exits, and little else. (We've already been there, the plan was to take on Snig on our terms) My current plan is to mount a charge and go out with a bit of dignity, but escape would really rule. ;)

Any plans aside from praying to pun-pun for a D?

Disclaimer: We have a great DM, his games are just a bit more laid-back than the norm. On the other hand, so are most of ours. He also has no qualms about killing PCs. ;)

If you're honestly not meant to win the battle, then do the valiant hero thing and go down swinging. Obviously, your eventual escape is part of the campaign plan, so Ninja McNinjerton probably won't escape either. My only advice is to fight for all you've got, and hope they do subdual damage.

Either that, or pick a door and hope it leads to salvation (Yay! Go Deus Ex Machina! :cheer: )

You see, my DM's outlook is pretty much ideal. He creates the obstacles, an intriguing plot, and allies when applicalbe, then lets us do pretty much anything, come what may, using Deus Ex Machina if he misjudged the difficulty and made something impossibly overpowering. (Beholder mentioned previously. Let's just say the party cleric now has a petrified foot which is slowly spreading to the rest of the body.) Thusly, we can escape. It will just be a great challenge. All that it being a plot device means is we're expected to fail. That doesn't mean we will fail, and our foes have no reason to have access to see invisibility. Our DM is awesome that way. :dancin:

It would also stand to reason we'll be surrounded come next challenge.

EDIT: Assuming most of them are Goblins, I might be able to jump over them to safety.
