| Gamebird10-23-06, 04:41 PM | My question is whether (and which) spells remain functioning on a character when they die and are immediately revived. Last game, our group had the misfortune to have two members die. Both adventurers had many buff spells on them: Bull's Strength, Fly, Barkskin, etc. They also both had a number of Permanency effects: See Invisible, Resistance, Darkvision and Tongues. (permanent effects placed on them by way of Ring of Spell Storing) They died. The next round, before the dead member's initiatives, the other party members cast spells on them that revived them. (It was a house spell called Death's Door from 2nd edition, though a nearly identical one exists in the 3.X Spell Compendium - the spell allows the caster to restore a creature to life if they died no more than one round previous to casting, no level/xp loss. Raise Dead or Resurrection would have had the same effect.) What I want to know is if any of the buff spells would still be in effect? What about the permanent effects? Now, being a wise player with a sometimes-bogus DM, I kept my mouth firmly shut during the game about this and the DM didn't think about the spells maybe not working anymore. After all, dead characters aren't valid targets for most spells - most of them specify a living target, or at least a "creature". Once brought back to life, we continued the difficult job of slaying the mosnters. But as a DM myself and as someone who wants to know how things *should* be done (even if we choose not to do them that way in the interest of a better game), I want to know what was right. |
