Ok, I got a bit of a laugh off this.

I recently stopped DMing a campaign and my friend started his as replacement. I couldn't make it for the first session, but yesterday I made it for the second one. I rolled up my character and joined the adventure.

Ok, so this DM is normally awsome. He has good storyline, good rule-knowledge, and in general fairness toward players and monsters. But that day he made a mistake...a funny one none-the-less.

We're all level 3 (and at this point and time almost level 4). We went through this dungeon, cleared some things out, and soon we will be heading back (Though that doesn't matter much). During our first run throughout the dungeon we ended up finding a deck of cards.

After we got back to town, got items identified and similiar stuff to that, we ended up finding out the deck was a "Deck of Many Things". Well you can see where this might go.

After a while the adventure was starting to die down and one of the players had to leave. Well the guy who has the Deck of Many Things was like "As you leave you get to draw a card". Well the guy draws a card and it turns into a magic broom that you can fly on. His character then jumps on the broom and flys off. Well the funny things about that is, the guy who owns the Deck of Many Things has been saving his money for like ever to buy a Broom of Flying... boy... his expersession was priceless.

Then he other guy left not bothering to draw a card. Only four of us and the DM are left so are characters basically sat in a circle and drew cards. My friends character drew a card first. He got an eight of spades and was instantly paralyzed (permentantly). His friend then drew a card and also drew the eight of spades (As it was shuffled back in) and was instantly paralyzed (Also permanantly). I then drew a card and got cursed with -1 to all saves (also... permentantly...). Then my friend kept drawing things and got very rich, a 4th level fighter minion, and some other random junk...

Was this the end of the adventure and these characters are no longer being used? If yes, then yipee fun fun!! :D

If not...keep the DM away from the Dwarven Ale!! yikes :pint:

lmao, our DM had his level 20 wizard port in and tell us we could draw from this deck as a *reward* for saving a town and clearing out a rather large orc den. several of us ended up dead (made new characters), 1 of us got 50kxp, i got a cloak of major displacement, and one of us got something like 2.5mil gold worth of diamonds. we were given the options of not drawing, or drawing 1,2, or 3 cards. before they died a couple characters got their own keep, lost the keep, THEN died. we were...mostly level 4, i believe the rogue and i were level 3 still because we died once and were ressurected

I'm pretty sure most of what happened is going to be erased... though I'm not sure... but this certainly isn't the end of the campaign. Only the begging for a long fruitful campaign.

I have been DMing the better part of a decade and honestly..... I HAVE NEVER seen a Deck of many things last more then ONE gamming session...

and accually, ... Every time i've seen a deck of many things in a game... the game is ALWAYS ruined.....

I think that is one item that should not exist.

I would never give my players a DoMT. I did however give one of them a rod of wonder. The RoW in my game is a major artifact and has ~90 effects. Some of them are good, some are bad, some are useful only if you're resourceful, and some are just silly. Quite amusing.

My astral deva character grew a Rod of Wonder appendage when her hand was cut off.

It created lots and lots of butterflies.
I wasn't very effective, and got slapped often for being useless.

Is it possible, as the owner of the cards, to simply spread them all out and take out the good ones? Then you could run around with a Deck of Many Horrible Horrible Things. Have NPCS draw them and cackle. Or maybe get a BBEG to draw a card...

heehhe. I know there is a problem with this because naturaly it seems too easy.

or is there?

in order to spred them all out you'd have to supress the magic and know what each card did. and your deck of bad things wouldnt last too long since the deck gets shuffled after each draw

The deck of many things makes me cry. I've run across is three times in 10 years and each time is has mangled my character. Why do I keep drawing from it? Because deep down part of me is an optomist and one day that thing will cut it out and stop picking on me! :weep:

One of my characters, being the evil Vasharan Shadowcaster that she is is going to do something nasty with the Deck of Many things AND the Deck of Transformations. She found both of these in the same adventure and took them before the party could stop her. The plan is simple, combine the two. The DM said he would allow it and even likes the idea. Poor...poor party.

I just found a deck as well, and the overall effects to my character were:
about dead even.

Go figure.
Lost all my magic items, got them replaced.
Fought death, defeated death.
Had my listed alignment changed to the alignment I was playing anyway.
