Defining DMPC [Archive] - Wizards Community

This thread is not for debating the definitions or concepts. Please just post what you think DMPC means and then move along. I will compile everyones answers after enough different people have posted. I will be running this thread on both boards to get the greatest cross section of gamers possible.

People should read the preceding post (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=698236) by Atiriakis that spawned this thread before responding.

That said, my definition is simple and direct:

A DMPC is an NPC that travels with the party as an ostensible co-equal.

Some people attach a negative commontation to the term, particularly when DMPCs are used as Mary Sue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue) characters. It is not a necessary definition of the word.
