That said, my definition is simple and direct: A DMPC is an NPC that travels with the party as an ostensible co-equal. Some people attach a negative commontation to the term, particularly when DMPCs are used as Mary Sue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue) characters. It is not a necessary definition of the word.
