I've recently got to thinking: does D&D provide us with any rules for having a chariot for battle? Could you just imagine hooking up a couple of Dragonnes or something and riding into battle? Awesome.

I'm just not sure how to convert this Roman battle vehicle into D&D terms. I just know how you fight in one (Latin class, after school, private tutor - I'm a geek. Love it! ). Normally 2 horses/Special Mounts(?) serve to pull the chariot, with 2 people on it. The charioteer takes care of driving, while a second person is an archer/crossbowman/javelin hurler. After ammo is used up, the ranged fighter draws his/her melee weapon and leaps into the fray. Charioteer drives off and waits by the sidelines [if possible. If not, run (drive) away, or drive through enemy ranks to scatter them.]. Should the battle turn ugly, the charioteer rescues the fighter and brings him back to be healed. When used in the Roman army, both charioteer and fighter were essentially circus performers, specially trained to be able to pull all sorts of stunts (therefore the rider did not have to slow for the fighter to board again). This could be a feat: Chariot Boarding Training, or something, to allow the person to choose to take a 10, even when injured, but mobile.

I'm looking for mechanics here: cost, requirements/restrictions, upgrades (spiked wheels for a drive-by attack), feats, any skills or feats needed to drive it or to fight on it.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Sword and Fist 3.0 rules for chariots.
Pretty much the same as rules for mounted combat with a couple changes.

My bad. Never read Sword and Fist.

Then again, that's 3.0, and we're in 3.5. Don't know the 3.0 rules. Ok, so I'm still learning the 3.5 rules.

Thanks.

By the way, what are your thoughts on the chariot rules: Do they need any updating to 3.5? Are they good for playing (I'll guess maybe not so much, if they didn't get upgraded into 3.5. But I'll give it a shot).

If there were any changes for the mounted combat rules, make the same changes.
It's really quite similar, all the same feats and skills but with (chariot).
Additional rules for sideswiping and etc...

Third Party Products are your best friend.

Green Ronin has Testament: Roleplaying in the Biblical Era, Trojan War, and Egyptian Adventures: Hamunaptra. All of which have rules for chariots and chariot-related stuff (and they're d20 books, of course).
