I need to 'guest-star' in a friend's campaign as a detective on the heels of a couple of fugitive characters. He asked me to get a (NPC-ish) character ready for his game ASAP, but I am getting hung up on some more "flavorful" parts of his character.

I can roleplay more than well enough for this guy (thanks to my mom's obsession with Law and Order) but I need help with the actual abilities/feat/skills ect. part. I have made him a Hexblade just so that he's a little out of the ordinary and he has both magic and melee (as the DM kinda requested).

I need some spells and feats and suggestions on equipment that would add a whole lot of flavor/flare/taste to a Hexblade Detective. If you have any ideas let me know.

If you had any good ideas for this character there is one other post up called "Knight" for which you may also be able to contribute you ideas. Thanks to all.

Ranger/bloodhound (CAd) is great for tracking down fugitives.

There's a prestige class in the Ravenloft accessory Heroes of Light called the Detective. Its abilities focus around gathering clues from crime scenes, gleaning information from interrogation and they gain temporary bonuses against opponents they've studied. PM me if you want more information.

Otherwise, the character could be just about any class combo. Put emphasis on skills like Sense Motive, Spot, Search, Listen, Gather Information, Knowledge (law/criminal sciences), Craft (alchemy) and the like. Look into spells and magical items that focus on gathering information.

I'm not sure how well you could qualify for it as a Hexblade, but the Eberron Campaign Setting (if your DM is running that or allows some setting-specific material) has a feat called Investigate and a Master Inquisitive prestige class that would seem to be right up this guy's alley.

Investigator types will likely find social skills (Sense Motive, Bluff, Gather Information, Intimidation) useful for interrogating suspects. High ranks in Search and Spot will be useful for finding clues. Ranks in Hide and Move Silently for getting the drop on the bad guys.

If you don't already have 6 or 8 skill points per level, a decently high INT (say at least 14) will come in handy. Recall, too, that the feat Open Minded (a General feat in the XPH) grants +5 skill points each time its taken.
