| Monk of Silence06-11-05, 04:17 PM | Okay I'm a level 4 gestalt druid/ranger elf I rolled a six 4 times and put it in dex my dm said I should stay in18 insted of 20 [ plus 2 elf] can you help me. :ayyyy!: |
| Fargren06-11-05, 04:34 PM | He is wrong, and he has no irght to reove an 18 out of you. The rules specify thatif with the racial bonifiers, your roll exceds 18, you have an abilitie score higher than 18. |
| Archangel_James06-11-05, 05:26 PM | There's no magic glass ceiling of 18 that prevents stats from exceding it. It's merely the highest you can get on a set of dice. Racial mods can absolutely overcome it. Keep your 20 Dex, then poke the DM in the arm and stick your tongue out at him :P . |
| Sir Ferdinand06-11-05, 06:08 PM | Here's the quote from SRD 3.5: ABILITY MODIFIERS Each ability, after changes made because of race, has a modifier ranging from –5 to +5. And 20 in an ability score means +5 modifier, so just show this thread to your DM and he should change his mind. |
| ehrin06-11-05, 06:20 PM | I wish my DM would let me roll 4d6 for my stats. Sheesh, that's a NIIIIIIICE DM. If he let me do that, and told me to stay at 18, I would. Why would you argue with someone about a free gift like that? |
| Flushmaster06-11-05, 06:23 PM | Actually, abilities can go a lot higher than 20, just not for first level characters of a PHB race. Various magical items can increase ability scores and you also get to add a permanent +1 to any one ability of your choice at fourth level and every four levels after that. In this case it would mena that you could have a dex of 22 and a +6 modifier at 8th level; it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect such a character to be able to afford a pair of gloves of dexterity +2 by that point as well (4,000gp) or maybe even a +4 set (16,000gp, IIRC) which would raise this even higher. This of course assumes that you're using 3.0 or 3.5 rules. If you're doing 2nd edition then it gets funky and you can't hit a 19 in any stat. Otherwise, your DM is being a jerk. |
| Thorak06-11-05, 06:23 PM | I wish my DM would let me roll 4d6 for my stats. Sheesh, that's a NIIIIIIICE DM. If he let me do that, and told me to stay at 18, I would. Why would you argue with someone about a free gift like that? So say you're rolling 3d6. And you rolled 3 6s. And your DM told you that you couldn't get higher than a 16. That's what the DM is doing. That's why it's an issue. |
| Monk of Silence06-11-05, 07:48 PM | thank you all . |
| ehrin06-11-05, 08:35 PM | Thorak, rolling 3d6 and capping below max is indeed, "unfair". But if my DM allowed me to roll 4d6, and then houseruled that my stats couldn't go above 18, then I figure that's fair. Heck, letting me roll 4d6 is a houserule, so if I get that houserule to my benefit, why should I complain about the next one not being beneficial? Seems to me I would still be far better off with 4d6 on all my scores, cap 18, than 4d6 drop the lowest, max whatever. I will take the sure thing with a cap, thank you, and not complain a bit. |
| Wolf7206-11-05, 09:02 PM | for a little more heroic scores ... roll 4d6: 3 ones = 18 roll 4d6: 4 ones = 19 roll 4d6: 4 sixes = 19 2 ones, and 2 two's gets still gets you a 5 |
| Dragonsblood06-11-05, 09:50 PM | ehrin, sounds like he DID do 3d6 (4d6 drop lowest). He rolled 4 6s. His DM is making him lose one of his main elf racial bonuses. |
| ehrin06-11-05, 09:58 PM | You assume the "drop the lowest"... it isn't stated in his post. That says his DM let him roll 4d6, period. Also, give his other post about all the nice magical items his DM gave him to start off with (at least 3 +2 items), I took it all to mean a very generous DM... 4d6, uber magic items free, monty haul campaign. All that, I wouldn't complain about standing pat at 18. |
| Sarella Starshine06-11-05, 10:53 PM | ahh yes, but he stated that he rolled 4 6's (which is 24) but the DM told him that his max for dex was 18 not 20 (20 being 18 (he dropped one of the 6's) plus 2 for the racial modifier), so it was right of those that assumed that he had the 'drop lowest' in effect, otherwise his dex with the 4d6 period would be 26 (24 for the 4 6's plus 2 for being an elf). sometimes its not what is written, but what is not written that can be infered by what is written :) . |
| ehrin06-11-05, 11:57 PM | Ah, see, I interpreted it that he rolled a six (sided die) four times, not that he rolled the number 6 four times. The total of his four rolls with the six (much like we tell someone to roll a twelve, or roll a twenty... we mean the dice, not the number) was eighteen, and his DM wouldn't allow his racial adjustment. |
