| mvander09-07-05, 09:19 AM | my DM has gotten a d20 the size of a softball and the reason for this is so we won't cheat. is there anything your DM has done so you won't take advantage? :plotting: |
| High Octane09-07-05, 10:55 AM | Rolling in a small dish in front of everyone. If it lands outside the dish, it doesnt count. Theres also a marble on the inside for added randomness. We have dubbed it the Cthulu bead. |
| Draco Strang09-07-05, 11:10 AM | We roll in the open, in a very plain and blatant fashion. Also, if you're rolling multiple attacks, each attack had a pre-determined color, so nobody can fudge their results so that every last one hits. |
| DarkWarriorKarg09-07-05, 11:15 AM | I've generally noticed that certain players roll a lot less effectively if they sit near me... (I'm the DM) |
| Baned09-07-05, 12:39 PM | I (DM) trust their rolls, but early in the campaign, I was suspicious of HP rolls. They always seemed to be very high. Then after a few sessions, I started watching them roll. They weren't cheating. Virtually every level, they roll one of the highest numbers on the die. |
| Thoronmir09-07-05, 12:58 PM | As a DM, I discourage cheating by only associating with players who don't cheat. As a player, my DM has followed my example. |
| Draco Strang09-07-05, 01:22 PM | As a DM, I discourage cheating by only associating with players who don't cheat. As a player, my DM has followed my example. Boooooooo......Why would you voluntarily remove such a constant, volatile source of conflict from your group? |
| Bane09-07-05, 01:37 PM | I had a DM who had a softball sized D20 to discourage cheating. If you cheated, he would throw it at you. :D |
| Dougbert09-07-05, 01:47 PM | I've got one of those. Weighs about 3 pounds and has the numbers arranged in a nonstandard, consecutive pattern? I think it was originally for a Magic counter or something. I slide it across the table when I think a player is using the old "non-literal die result interpretation". It's more of a joke now. It started when a new player to the group was using clear dice, without colored number grooves, and rolled inside the lid of a file folder box. Heck, HE couldn't even read the darn things. |
| Sunblast09-07-05, 03:31 PM | You're forgetting one of the most obvious ones. A screen to shield the DM's documents and rolls from the players' view. I made one for my DM out of matte board and light-proof tape. :) He still has it, but now he uses one he made from a board to an old D&Dish board game. |

The offical 3.0 screen, and the free one for 3.5 from Dragon Magazine a few years ago. |
| ^Graff_EpsilonIX09-07-05, 08:39 PM | I recalculated the character's stats, and suchlike. Whenver they either picked up the dice too fast for me to check the number or fudged the roll in any other way, they missed. Simple yet effective. Most of the people I have to deal with don't think of cheating. I also place a lot of importance on my documents, as long as they can't see the campaign notes I'm fine. They know the MM by heart so it comes down to adjusting stuff a bit. |
| Phrennzy09-07-05, 09:58 PM | The first time I sit down with a group as DM, I place my freshly oiled and polished 357 Magnum on the table in front of me. I say nothing. THe game proceeds, until I see someone cheat. I then snatch up my weapon and blow the offending die from the table. You would be surprised at the impact this has on players. |
| Super_Demolition_Christ09-07-05, 10:10 PM | my DM has gotten a d20 the size of a softball and the reason for this is so we won't cheat. is there anything your DM has done so you won't take advantage? :plotting: no, are DMs and players arent poons like that |

You would be surprised at the impact this has on players. wow. that is scary I would **** myself if someone did that at my table. But I totaly agree with it and think it awesome at the same time. (back on topic) no one in my group cheats, and we allways roll out in the open (except for the DM). Idk what I would do if I caught on of my players/someone in my group cheating. I do know that I would feel very cheated by them and probably would never want to play with them again. Would I have the balls to kick them out (assuming I am DMing) idk but I would watch their rolls more carefully. |
| UltimateReality09-08-05, 12:10 AM | my DM has gotten a d20 the size of a softball and the reason for this is so we won't cheat. is there anything your DM has done so you won't take advantage? :plotting: Kicked the cheaters out. As a side note: when DMing, I can't sit still any more than I could while playing. This has led to a couple of results. One, I carry my notes with me and roll in the open, so no need for a DM screen. Two, I replace non-climactic rolls with pre-printed random generated sheets that never leave my hands. This leaves me free to wander around the room in my fidgety style. wow. that is scaryOh yeah, you know, that Phrennzy is one crazy mofo. I would seriously not **** him off, or he will bust one huge cap in your...um....yeah. n/m I'm going to shut up and leave now. Because I'm scared of Phrennzy. :shifty:  (If I can spell his name right...) |
| braindead34509-08-05, 01:53 AM | I (DM) trust their rolls, but early in the campaign, I was suspicious of HP rolls. They always seemed to be very high. Then after a few sessions, I started watching them roll. They weren't cheating. Virtually every level, they roll one of the highest numbers on the die. There are more ways to cheat die rolls than just lying about the result. Modified dice (a.k.a. "loaded" dice) aren't just for Vegas anymore. I won't go into different ways of making dice biased for one result or another here, but there are ways and they are usually quite inexpensive and easy to do. If you are truly paranoid about the die rolls, have a common set of dice used by all players and demand that DM (or some honest bystander) holds on to the dice between games. Better yet, get a lockbox that requires two different keys, one key goes to the DM and the other one gets copied by the players to distribute amongst themselves. Of course, these are extreme measures and go far beyond the needs of most. The reason is simple, since a majority of players only game for fun. Does it really matter if you or other players fudge their rolls? Does it detract from the overall enjoyment you and your friends get from the game? Is it worth the exchange of heated words and hurt feelings? Some things are just too irrevelant to worry about. Of course, it should be noted that most players are mature enough not to gain pleasure from cheating. It is a most juvenile thing to do and only makes the game predictable and boring. |
| Tyler Do'Urden09-08-05, 04:15 AM | I tend to roll really well on hit points, too. For example I had a monk character who's HP was just above average for a fighter of the same Con. I've never met an honest player that had a problem rolling on the table. The other option is to have a dunce cap. If anyone is caught changing a roll in a non-joking manner, he has to wear the dunce cap and either the DM or an antagonistic player gets to roll for him. |
| High Octane09-08-05, 10:08 AM | Hmm, Ill just have to explain to my players that if I ever find out they are cheating, I will take a slightly bent gold colored Louisville Slugger and beat them until candy comes out. |
| Phrennzy09-08-05, 10:09 AM | Tyler, you have one of the greatest screen names on these boards. You also have one of the greatest sigs. "You are already dead." Perfect. |
| Phrennzy09-08-05, 10:17 AM | Hmm, Ill just have to explain to my players that if I ever find out they are cheating, I will take a slightly bent gold colored Louisville Slugger and beat them until candy comes out. How festive! |
| Callista09-08-05, 11:54 AM | *shrugs* We just have a "Roll on the table" rule. We do have one player who likes to cheat; but only to the extent that when she gets a natural 1, she'll just pick up the die real quick and say "Missed". That's because my DM (despite my telling him how silly they are) insists on using critical misses, and she's tired of throwing her crossbow across the room. Frankly, I don't blame her sometimes... We do know she tends to do this, so generally when she rolls a "1" we'll say something like, "Oh, nat 1, bummer"... that gets the point across generally. |
| jukar09-08-05, 07:19 PM | Hmm, Ill just have to explain to my players that if I ever find out they are cheating, I will take a slightly bent gold colored Louisville Slugger and beat them until candy comes out. Do you wear roller blades while doing so? |

In this case, keep the cheater, toss the DM. |
| Pryrates09-08-05, 09:23 PM | My DM is completely opposite, he pretty much trusts that we wont cheat, hell he even allows us to roll stats at home and bring them in. Some might think this inspires cheating but so far its worked out really well infact it sometimes turns into a hinderance if you do roll an 18 because youre not sure if he'll believe you or not. I once rolled two 18s in fear of being called a cheater they changed to a 17 and 16. |
| Lyranis09-08-05, 10:20 PM | Our group rolls on the table out in the open. None of us even considered rolling it privately. As for cheating. Yah, We joke about cheating, but no one actually does it. We've taken a 2 and rolled it one side over to a 20 and then said "Oh, look Natural 20" when the dm already saw the two, he's just laugh and go, Okay, so what's the total.. we'd answer... uh.. 8. As for nat 1's? We USE the crit miss rule.. And the DM is VERY well known for rolling 1's! It's the only thing that's saved our butts sometimes... And as for our natural 1's? Some pretty funny things happen, and we never carry less than 3 weapons each! |
| spectralphoenix09-08-05, 10:33 PM | I once played with a group of players that were somewhat on munchkinny side. Someone decided that while you had to roll 4d6 and drop lowest to find your stats, it didn't matter how many times you rolled. While most players did so in public, after a while one player claimed he rolled all afternoon and got straight 18's. I explained that the odds of that were about one in 5 or 6 billion, and if he rolled and totalled his dice once a secound it would happen once in 1752 years, but he stuck to his story. While we were all overpowered, I guess that still didn't stop die fudging. |
| Tiran09-09-05, 12:20 AM | The first time I sit down with a group as DM, I place my freshly oiled and polished 357 Magnum on the table in front of me. I say nothing. THe game proceeds, until I see someone cheat. I then snatch up my weapon and blow the offending die from the table. You would be surprised at the impact this has on players. I'd think you'd have no players if that was in anyway serious. That would probably scare the hell out of me. |
| Callista09-09-05, 12:26 AM | *nods* He's no more serious than I am when I say I'll strangle my DM the next time he gets us in trouble with a great wyrm dragon... (Yeah. He's done it more than once. And we couldn't have predicted it either time...) I might withhold his Doritos if I'm really mad, though. |
| Phrennzy09-09-05, 09:57 AM | I'd think you'd have no players if that was in anyway serious. That would probably scare the hell out of me. No, actually, I really do that. I feel that most players want their DM to have a strong sense of discipline. I don't use real bullets - I use blanks. But it really is effective. I did use real bullets once, when I had taken my weapon to the firing range and forgotten to switch back to blanks before the game. Wouldn't you know that someone had to try to cheat on THAT day. I still haven't repaired the hole in the table. I think it serves as even more of a warning. One of the players uses the hole as a cup holder. Good times. |
| cambric09-09-05, 10:52 AM | Everyone rolls in the open, on the table. When I DM, I even roll in front of them. I have a belief that I'm telling a story and even I'm affected by the dice. So if I hit them with a crit, the know it was the dice! The look on their faces too when they see the die stop on "20"...I literally watched the wizard begin to sweat!! (they are all around 11-16). He knew if it was a crit, he died. Thankfully, it wasn't...but they know that I believe in NO CHEATING!! Where's the fun in that anyhow??? If you need to cheat, why play? Come on in and I'll tell you what's suppose to happen, you just tell me what is going to happen and we'll call it a day. Don't waste my time by turning your dice over to the number you want. When I play, my DM has everyone look at each other's rolls. If you touch the die before anyone has seen it, it's "auto-missed". But it's a rare time we have anyone cheating. Usually, someone gets "down" about missing everything and all of a sudden, "finally a high number" and the die was changed. Rare...but it happens. Phrennzy, man, you would have to A: clean me up, because my drawers would've been filled, B: then you could carry me out. To see the expression on those people's faces...shoot, I bet you were stunned too!! Cam |
