different familiar options [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-06-07, 09:33 PM I have an elf/Grimly Born(pc created race on these forums) wizard in a fairly standard campaign, as in not all psychic or set in some odd plane of existence. I looked at the list of familiars I could choose from and just wasn't too interested in any of them. The abilties for the most part ok, although some of the reflex saves and will saves and all that seem a waste of a familiar, but the familiars themselves just weren't too appealing to me. My DM is pretty cool and will let me choose a non-standard familiar as long as it's not overpowered or anything, but I don't know what to choose. I'm pretty open on ideas for the creature and the abilities, and am not against taking a non-standard familiar with standard effects, such as a raccoon with the beetles' health buff. Please help, I'm fairly open to ideas but am just unable to come up with my own.:weep: :confused:

01-07-07, 01:09 PM This thread should be in Magic/Spells thread. Anywho, I would say a monkey or a, if you want to go a big more magical, a Shadow Asp from FF (minus the Create Spawn feature).

01-07-07, 02:58 PM BoED has celestial Familiar where you get a celestial as a familiar dependign on alignment, Coure Eladrin are really fun and they have tongues.

01-07-07, 08:48 PM I have the phb 2 and am not too interested in losing my familiar, just changing it to something non-standard. While the butterfly and monkey ideas are interesting I'm looking at some sort of small mammal or animal associated with evil, such as rats, bats, and all of that. Animae, I don't have BoED as I am not too interested in Good characters, I have ordered the BoVD though, do you know if that has anything in there of that sort?
I have also thought of a couple ideas and was wondering what you guys(and girls) thought of them.
My first was an undead familiar, maybe a skeletal weasel or something. The effect of it would be giving me more HP like a beetle does, or maybe giving me a bonus on concentration checks due to becoming somewhat like my familiar and not being as effected by pain.
My second idea is loosely based off of the imp in WoW. My character is going to be going Elemental Savant prestige class eventually and I was thinking my imp could be based around whatever element I decide upon. If I choose fire, my imp is fire-oriented and gives me a bonus on concentration checks when casting fire spells, or adding to the DC of fire spells I cast.

01-07-07, 09:48 PM What youre lookign for is a Stitched Flesh Familiar from Libris Mortis, you get a familiar that is undead. I suggest a Stitched Flesh Anthropomorphic Bat. It's just icing on the darker caster cake you seem to be playing.

BoVD contains nothing as far as familiars go, but maybe your DM would approve a tiny sized devil or demon as a familiar for you.

01-07-07, 10:59 PM i agree that the familiars are pretty dull, im currently looking into (being a DM) finding a way or small quest to taim a magical familiar (Imp or some such) and in a necromancer's case an undead familiar.

01-08-07, 11:11 AM Dragon 341 has an article that presents a bunch of new familiars - including rabbit, squirrel, chameleon, crow, dog, monkey, and platypus. Among others. :) It was co-written by yours truly. :D

01-08-07, 06:05 PM Thanks for the idea. I talked to my DM today and the only way she is accepting an undead pet is if it is an undead monkey. She apprently doesn't want much undead in the campaign and the only reaoon she made the exception for a monkey is because supposedly(I haven't seen the movie) there is a funny undead monkey in Pirates of the Caribbean(sp?) 2. I'm still searching for something although the tiny devil/demon sounds like it would be a lot of fun for me to have. It could be like the classic angel-and-devil-on-your-shoulder type thing, cept I don't have the angel to balance me out, lol.

Nope, can't link it. It was published in Dragon, and WotC owns the material. Paizo sells back issues of the magazines on their site. :)
