Ok, my DM has recently decided to give the psion in our party an ankylosaurus baby which he found in the forest. We are level 14 characters and I play a druid. It seems more than a bit unfair that the psion, who is by far the most broken character ever, should get an ankylosaurus when I was only eligible for one last level. Oh, by the way, the ankylosaurus has the psionic template, so it can apparently communicate with the psion telepathically.

When I brought up how ridiculous this was, my DM attempted to turn it back around on me by bringing up the animal companion he custom made for me (a polar bear half-black dragon, totally broken). So now he thinks it only fair that I have to give up my companion if I want the psion to give up his.

Am I being penalized for my class abilities, or am I overreacting?

Polar bear half black dragon? Wonder how that first date went...

Dark Sun had psionic companions, but psionic dinosaurs? Whew. Any chance you guys just go back to the normal rules? If one person has to give up an extraordinary creature, I'd say it'd be fair that you both give it up. As a druid, you can just meditate for another one, so no big loss.

I'd be glad to give up my companion in order for this to happen, but losing the dinosaur would make my friend angry. I just don't see the sense in a psion having a freakin' dinosaur.

Stop talking about ''making sense''. God just killed a kitten.

Emphasis mine.:D
(Just kidding)

Seriously, why don't you two have a talk? It'll resolve more problems than we can.

P.S: Could you tell how can the psion be the most broken character ever?

What exactly is a "baby" ankylosaurus capable of? The adult is CR 7 (MM2) so a baby should be something like CR 1 or 2?

As long as it never grows up, it is practically a Familiar.

If it is a baby Cave Ankylosaurus (MH) which is CR 6, I guess that would be even weaker?

Ask other players. If they feel underpowered next to him, you might have a case. Or they feel underpowered compared to YOU. Hard to tell with this amount of information. Got builds? Items given and not bought?

I'm going to reiterate what GuyrtheadamantineOne said: talk to your fellow player about it. Also talk to the DM about it. (Which I see you've done already). Maybe both at once (if only to have the DM handy as mediator). But try not to need a mediator. I doubt your DM will enjoy being drawn into the crossfire. Also, could you expand upon this "psionic" template? I'm not familiar with it. If you mean Phrenic, then that's may be stupidly overpowered. At least, it's one of those cases where LA is perfectly on the dot rather than gimping you. And how is the psion broken? Or do you just feel psionics is inherently broken?

Anyway, it may be that the DM had another reason for giving the psion his pet. It may also be a roleplaying or adventure hook in the making. It may be an attempt to foster a connection between the druid and the psion, now that both are taking care of a rather unique creature. Or maybe it's just to give the psion a more interesting companion than a pet rock (psicrystal). I wouldn't request he get rid of his pet. At worst, require a feat to have it. (Wild Cohort, Leadership, etc. Or maybe just investing a feat slot to have this pet, without taking a formally defined feat).

Everything said above is great, I would just add that in the long run of Roleplaying you'll have a lot more fun if you don't worry about "how powerful" the other PCs are.

Poor widdle druid with a half-dragon animal companion! The other guy has something cooler! Waaah!

Yes, you are overreacting. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dog_in_the_Manger).

Polar bear has CR4 - then add 1/2 dragon template(+2 CR), then add druid animal companion stuff.
I don't know what psionic template this dinosaur has, or what being a psionic companion gives it, but the adult is CR 7, so it's probably about equal to your companion with all the extras the psionic stuff gives it.
Also - A druid calling a psion broken, something is wrong there. I'm currently playing a psion in a game and I know a druid of equal level would kill me in a one on one fight, no questions asked.

I'm quite interested in seeing some builds here, mainly becuase I think that if the psion is broken, the player and the DM may have forgotten a key psionics rule: the character is only allowed to spend power points equal to their manifester level per power (unless they have the overchannel feat, then they can spend 3 extra points, but take damage).
