DM Alters story just to mock me? [Archive] - Wizards Community

so heres the scoop..

in a prevous session there was an NPC who was going to help us but I (apperarently bieng over paranoid) casted det evil on him and the dm told me "he doesent regester- you can't detect anything" and implied that somehow I could normally detect at least the preasence of other creatures even though they wernt evil, and that this was a special case where I failed to detect anything at all, let alone something evil.

well, lets ignore how det evil works and skip to me thinking it was odd and casting divination to find out wether we shuld trust this "non alignment radiating" NPC. after 1/2 hour he says "he will take you to where you need to go" and when we go there, the NPC betrays us and screws everything.
(granted that without the betrayal the story would end and it would be more fun- I guess this seemed like an OK use of DM rule bending)

now while we were waiting for the next installment of this epic adventure to be released (10 points if you can guess the adventure!!) my group kinda made fun of me a little here and there for bieng so paranoid- but ya know what? - I was right.

and now finally tonight we played the first installment of the new chapter and we were suposed to give a powerful artifact to a good priest. I, having been screwed before casted det evil and the DM said that he radiated "nothing" again, as opposed to the guy standing next to him who radiated "neutral" on a det evil. well, I figure this time I'll cast commune and try to be sure we are giving this powerful artifact to the REAL good guys when the NPC argues with me- asking to hand over the artifact now. this goes on for about 10 minutes when the entire table erupts with laughter!

I was then informed that for the past 6 months all of the other players knew
the DM was planning to change this encounter so he and they could all have a hearty laugh. the DM then says none of that happened, he never radiated "nothing" and then continues with the adventure as though nothing happened.

I wanted to leave right then, but was afraid of bieng labeled a "baby", so I stuck i out and contrubuted very little to the rest of the session.

what shuld I do?

Get over it. Time to move on.

I wouldn't call it a little prank, the DM planning it for six months puts it up a few notches. It isn't a huge deal, true, but it was still a jackass thing to do.

How about you realize that they think enough of you to tease you a bit.

If they didn't like you, they wouldn't even invite you.

Now grow up and take your teasing like an adult.

Unless, of course, you're not an adult. Then you can feel free to engage in another childish outburst.

As far as people teasing me a bit, I roll with the punches. I enjoy being teased, cause chances are I'm gonna tease them back.

And I'm not invincible. I'm nigh-invincible.

Granted, this one was a little lame. But you gotta appreciate the DM's dedication.

Dude, if they've been keeping secrets like this for 6 months, imagine what else they're keeping behind your back, just waiting to spring on you and prank you again. I hate pranks like that - they remind one of old schoolyard bullies that say, "Oh yeah, we'll let you play basketball with us."

A good prank would be something in-character, like an illusionist playing with his spells. Akin to the schoolyard mates saying "Look over there!" then scoring a point while your back was turned or something.
A bad prank is something like this, where the others then pull down your shorts when you're in the middle of the game, making you feel embarrassed. When you pull them back up, they continue as though nothing had happened, but the damage is done, and they might do it again, or worse.

At the risk of seeming to mock you, I recommend you ask the DM if that one situation was a one-off, that you aren't just in this game to be poked at and made fun of.
And seriously, if this happens again, pack up.

Note that I am still pretty much a child, and one that abhors any kind of bad prank done on anyone else, never mind myself.

Back at that age, I didn't know how to react. In some ways, it's a challenge. You gotta up the ante and prank them back.

Course, I'm kinda discriminating in whom I tease and play pranks on. I only really like to play around with people that will do it back. I don't bother those that are too sensitive about these kinds of things.

Back at that age, I didn't know how to react. In some ways, it's a challenge. You gotta up the ante and prank them back. But how, I wonder?
It depends on how sweet the DM (and the other players) are feeling about being pranked on back. To do a prank properly, at least one other person has to be in on it, otherwise it might just give the impression that the OP is being a jerk about it. Usually, this other person is the DM, since he can so finely manipulate events and features to facilitate the prank.
So, in actuality, asking the DM to help you with a prank on the other players might actually be a good way to determine if they're a group worth sticking around with. If the DM is willing to do along with it, then a good prank can go ahead. If the DM says something that would give the impression that he's not going to let you do anything that "ruins the other players' fun," then the group might not be worth it.

Mind you, I've had to adjust my former stance. 'Good' pranks - ones that are designed to be fun for all those involved - are fine. 'Bad' pranks - ones designed specifically to humiliate or hurt someone, most of which are the 'schoolyard' variety - are not.
...
Mostly because I just remembered pulling a 'good' prank on another PC in one campaign (everyone had a good laugh at the DM's description - even the target player), and I try not for hypocrisy.

another motivation for something like this is if you have made the party and the dm feel that you were too egotistical and they wanted to show you that you werent infallible.

currently in my game one of my players keeps getting cocky and then lucky and it has started getting to the other player and me so we decided that the next time he says "im like untouchable" while he is in melee the other player is going to shoot him.

in a prevous session there was an NPC who was going to help us but I (apperarently bieng over paranoid) casted det evil on him and the dm told me "he doesent regester- you can't detect anything" and implied that somehow I could normally detect at least the preasence of other creatures even though they wernt evil, and that this was a special case where I failed to detect anything at all, let alone something evil.

Detect evil only detects evil, not any other alignment. The NPC could have been neutral and still betrayed the party.

The problem with detections is that they can be fooled. Nystul's magic aura can make magic items appear mundane, and other spells just block them.

well, lets ignore how det evil works and skip to me thinking it was odd and casting divination to find out wether we shuld trust this "non alignment radiating" NPC. after 1/2 hour he says "he will take you to where you need to go" and when we go there, the NPC betrays us and screws everything.

Well he did take you where you needed to go right? The divination never said if that NPC would betray you or not.
Count Arioch the 28th

04-02-07, 08:29 AM
Well, if you use Detect Evil, anyone of Good or Neutral alignment will show up as nothing, as Detect Evil only detects presence or absence of evil.

If they're not evil, then they don't detect as anything.

I'd say that this particular action was a Richard maneuver, but I'd say let it slide for now.

Come on! Go ahead
In my party it happens every now and than that 2 or more players (sometimes me, the DM... all between 25 and 35 years old) make stupid baby jokes! It's all a matter of fun and stay some hours with friends and be a stupid kid for a while (before going back to stay with my beloved 4 month old baby!)

P.S.
Detect evil DO NOT detect "neutral". If something is evil you see the evil aura, if it isn't evil you do not see nothing and you cannot know if it is "good" or "neutral" or "undetectable (there are more ways to make things undetectable)

Hey, if the DM flat out lies to you solely to ridicule you as a person (rather than the character) then I suggest you return the favor: Build Pun-pun. Or the King of Smack. Or the Hulking Hurler. Make your character a vicious psychopath who loves nothing more than to kill people and eat their bodies (just for added insult). Now proceed to level the DM's cities, murder his gods and NPCs in a single standard action and at the very LEAST murder all the other player characters. Then ask them how funny they thought it was to be on the receiving end of obvious, childish and malignant mistreatment. Or you can simply become a better person than any of them, leave the group and look for a group with decent human beings rather than the filthy refuse these ***holes seem to be.

As for Puritan, just because mistreatment happens a lot in life doesn't mean we should embrace it or encourage it. I've been hospitalized no less than twelve times in my life because of people "playing pranks" on me, and this is how it all got started - with words. Yeah, I grew tough because of it, but I'd rather it'd never happened in the first place.

04-02-07, 09:07 AM
Why so much "rage"?
Why so much people are so sure that the players were evil?
They were joking... and if you feel offended... well, you aren't friends!

04-02-07, 09:07 AM
I guess there's a lot more people that take themselves too seriously than I originally thought.

And any prank that ends up putting a person in the hospital (12 freaking times? get some new friends) ceases to be a prank. What the OP's DM did had about 0% chance of hurting the OP other than a bit of embarrasment.

I got news for you: You're going to be embarrased quite a few times in life. Cowboy up and learn to dish it out too.

04-02-07, 09:14 AM
I'm still confused about what the actual "prank" was. It seems that the only thing he changed was the "alignment" or lack thereof of the priest and made him argue with you. Depending on what was said, I don't really even see a "prank" so much as a pointless waste of time. If I was one of the other players I'd kind of be upset if my DM wasted 30 min. just for a cheap laugh. Maybe I misread something.

I think it may be time to find a new group, but thats just me.

04-02-07, 09:27 AM
The prank seems to have been that the whole player group decided to to plan this event ahead of time, with the sole and express purpose being to ridicule him as a player, not his character. The DM even broke rules and lied about it just to cover his tracks (which of course means that even if it were just a prank, it'd been a bad one). That does NOT sound like something a friend would do to another.

So like others have said, these people are NOT your friends. Friends don't go out of their way for the sole purpose of ruining your day so they can enjoy your misery. You may as well stop treating them as if they were your friends and treat them like the schoolyard bullies that they obviously are.

It seems almost ironic that your character used Detect Evil on evil people in game, but you as a player failed to detect the evil that was surrounding you in real life.

And those people who put me in the hospital were never my friends. Just people I went to school with. But this thread isn't about me. I was just using my experience as an example of how bad it can get.

I think you should pull your DM aside and tell him how you feel about what happened. Try to present it in a reasonable and mature manner. Keep your cool as best you can and try to take the high road. You might want to give yourself a little time to cool off before you do this so you don't blow up at him. If he can't or won't see why this made you feel uncomfortable and upset, then maybe its time to move on and find another group to play with.

To the OP: You've heard a lot of opinions here on your reaction and your group's "prank" and yadda yadda.

Well here's another one! :D

I have what another poster called a "thick skin," due to many many years of being the butt of many jokes and pranks and yadda yadda. Apparently I'm a big juicy target for bullies and the like. Now, people can spend all day teasing me and I just ignore it, knowing in the end I'm better than they are because I'm secure enough in who I am that I don't have to make other people feel insecure. A little prank like that wouldn't bug me on a level where I would feel insulted or humiliated. Don't let it get under your skin like that.

That being said, if it did happen to me, while I wouldn't be offende or humiliated, I would be friggin annoyed. My friends tease me about lots of my characters on a pretty constant basis (again the whole insecure because of their flaws so they have to tear me down any way they can) but if they all planned to "prank" me in game behind my back, I'd be ****** that they wasted my time when I came to play D&D, not to play pranks. So on that end I don't blame you for being ****** and wanting to walk out. I probably would have felt the same way.

However I would have gotten over it after smking a butt or drinking a beer. And I would have gone back with Pun Pun or a CoDzilla or something and wiped the floor with them and everything the DM threw at me. You should do the same. Especially if none of them frequent the boards. Name Pun Pun, Pun Pun! And when they look at you **** eyed, just smile to youself. Because you know what's coming.

But if the "pranks" continue, i would find a new group. You didn't ask to be in the group because you wanted to be the DM's guinea pig for his practical jokes (to be fair, though, this was a friggin stupid practical joke) and if they call you a baby, just remember that you're the bigger man, the better person who respects his friends enough to not make them feel humiliated or whatever.

Yes, friends tease eachother. A lot (especially males). But there is a line between friendly teasing and just plain being an **** hole. Find that line and figure out if they're crossing it

To the posters telling him to grow up or cowboy up or whatever: A little compassion never hurt anyone. The boards is a place for people to discuss D&D, and that will involve people seeking advice on how to deal with issues. It is not a forum for you to tell people that they are immature or too sensitive or whatever, and that they're problems don't matter. Maybe to you they don't. Good for you. Get off your friggin high horse and be a contributing member of this community. Don't be a jack hole. If you want to be a jack hole, go post somewhere else. Adults are discussing issues here.

I never called the OP immature, I called his outburst in response to my first response childish.

You yourself say that friends tease each other. A lot. Thats exactly what the OP was describing. They weren't malicious in what they did, they were just having a bit of fun at his expense. It's going to happen time and time again throughout life. Everyone experiences this. Chances are, next time it happens in the group, it will be at someone else's expense. I suggest rolling with it and having fun.

I do think that if this becomes a regular occurance and the OP is the target of this teasing every time, then of course he needs to do something to rectify the situation. But so far this has happened one time as far as we know.

Kill them all in their sleep (their characters...), animate them as your undead slaves, then say "WHO'S LAUGHING NOW?!" and laugh maniacally, as you make their corpses square dance with each other. :evillaugh

It was April Fools Days yesterday. It's a day for jokes and pranks. Friend joke with each other. Here is a group of people that invite you to their homes, include in their recreational time and seem comfortable enough with you to play a joke on you (on April Fools Day no less). Get over it and be apart of the next prank on the next guy.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gifThe OP is the one that let them ruin his day by letting this little teasing affect him so much. Good friends do apologize if a prank or joke goes wrong. Smart friends think up pranks that can't go wrong. I don't think the OP has smart friends (based on the quality of this prank).

I will say that plotting for 6 months for such a stupid joke was stupid in itself. But one poorly planned and executed prank does not mean you get to revoke their people license.

For those of you suggesting that he retaliate in game. Good ideas there. Just remember, OP, to take it back after you're done with the prank. The DM did say "None of that ever happened" so you should do the equivalent.

And if the DM and the group gets upset over your actions, just say "Hey, you can dish it out but you can't take it? Relax fellas. I've been planning this for 6 months now."

About the joke: Stupid joke. Only because of April 1st, this is tolerateable.

What the book of repartees sais about this: When a really bad joke is on you, make sure, the one playing it knows how bad it was in the end. Best ask him to explain the joke into every detail. Especially questions like "Okay, and what was supposed to be the punch line?" and "Ah! And finally could you tell me, what about this is funny. ... Nono, I mean funny." and finally, when he has explained the joke and it's defninitly not funny anymore, then you can burst out into loughter, too. You know, this fake, zynical laughter. An: "Oh, yes, now I get it. Hahaha .... No, it's defnintly not funny." is optional.

As for the situation now: Yes, a little payback, in form of a misplaces fireball or something sounds like a freat idea.
Also known as: "You are nightwatch and spot some <monster> sneak towards the camp, what do you do?" - "Get away with the group's loot, silently, sell it in the next city and start a simple (financially carefree) tavern (or other buisness of your choise)."

First of all...I agree with Cartigan, if it took someone 6 months to come up with that prank, that being had better be goldfish that got his head caught in a revolving door....a miniature, underwater revolving door.

That being said, I have a strict policy to NEVER play in a group GONAD'ed by a goldfish.

Seriously though, these threads always end one of 2 ways. Either you talk to your group, tell them how you feel, you all sit down and tell ghost stories, talk about the opposite gender (or the same gender, whatever your thing is) eat pizza and roll a few dice. Or, you get offended enough to roll up your sleaves and ditch your group for a more self actualized group of people.

See the recurring theme here people jeez....Hey someone get Dr. Phil to get a membership to the boards.

I think you are being a little sensitive if this was a one off event.

Sensitive or not, the hurt was very real. But at the same time friends often joke around, it was not a particularly malicious prank. They thought enough of you to plan that whole thing. It could just be a joke among friends, next time it could be someone else.

Only you can decide how significant the prank was. I really don't know enough about you to comment. You could be a whiner that always wants his own way. Maybe you are too paranoid and the other players simply don't care. Or maybe you take the game too seriously, get upset when you get hammered, always trying to eek out the advantage. In which case the players are sick of you're attitude and so they make fun of you. Maybe you are simply that person that's in every group of boys who gets teased the most.

So you should do what feels right. See Azerians post above..

While I agree it's a very bad joke(I am not sure if it can be called a joke, at all), I cannot draw the whole picture out of your post.
It's just they are jerks.
Or perhaps you might have an annoying playing style.
I can't really tell. So I'll say what I can.

1. You don't detect "Neutral" with Detect Evil. You see nothing on good and neutral people.
As such, your DM has been ruling alignment detection so wrong.
2. Undetectable Alignment spell conceals alignment.

Wow! That was extreme. You must get beat-up and have your lunch money stolen daily at school. I may be wrong but you sound a bit jaded.

The large problem with practical jokes is that they are rarely either practical or funny for the victim.

I hate humor based on trashing someone else. It's so low class.

I don't know about you, but I don't plan on having a heart attack in my 40's because I let others stress me out this much.

The OP is the one that let them ruin his day by letting this little teasing affect him so much.

Good friends don't prank each other. At least, good friends who have matured past 16. I don't plan on having a heart attack at all, because I don't associate with people who think along lines of "HURRRRRR we sure did **** our friend off good! DURRRRRR http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/smileys/downs.gif". There's a difference between good-natured ribbing, and being a complete asshead. I'll let you take 3 guesses as to which catagory these "friends" fall in.

well, The other guys and I have been friends for a while, and some teasing (although on a much smaller scale) does fly freely, this one stands out becuse:

1. It was everybody kinda focusing on one person
2. it was a secret for 6 months
3. they changed a store bought adventure and tarnished the game by seroiusly role playing this in-game.

I suppose there is a first time for everything, but none of the above three have happened in our group before.

thanks all for your input- by my reaction that night they know that I dident think it was funny. I think what I will do is go back and never cast any divination spells ever again. screw that- if they dont want me to try and make sure the group isn't getting fooled-fine-I won't ever again.

as for if i've done anything to provoke this: mabie I guess.
it seems nobody but me cares when wether or not you porvoke an attack of oppurtunity drinking a potion.
or wether you can get cover vs reach weapons,
or the fact that you can choose you adjacent space to occupy after you escape a grapple.
when I dont know the rules-I want to find you what they are (that is-without stopping combat to find out) instead of the dm just making something up on the spot.

does that make me a bad player?
I know DND isnt chess but what would chess be like if everyone just moved the pieces however they thought was best without knowing the actual moves?

well anyway, they know how I feel, and if they pull this again, I'm gone. no $169 hotel cut for gen con, no wizard/mystic/mystic thurge for their final adventure.
I have better things to do.

if I play back(ie kill thier charecters) I'm afraid the whole night would be filled with stupid scenes that never happened-and I want to game!

Thanks for you input folks...

I'll answer frankly, note that this is from my point of view and previous experiences:
The group, obviously, doesn't like you, and when that happends, the whole group tends to act against you either in a slight or real matter.
For me, what they did is acting as 2 years old people, and a complete lack of respect.
There are other groups and even if not, if an alcoholic can stop drinking with some time, you can stop playing, it's not a need, and it's better to spend some good time, even alone, than spending whole game sessions with such....disgusting? people

Exactly how did they tarnish the game of Make Believe by pulling a "prank".

And what exactly was the "prank" Having someone not show up as detect evil? Is that really a prank or just slightly changing the module? Which a DM has the right to do. And what kind of prank is small than changing the alignment of a NPC in a module?

I mean if the prank was having you sit in a broken chair and having it fall on you, or soaking you with water then I could understand. But making it where your characters spells do not work as you thought it should.

I dont like pranks, and I dont like mean spirited jokes. This was neither. As far as planning for 6 whole months it could have happened like this

Other PC's: "Hey, Bob is dragging the game down with his detect spells."
DM: "I know. I tell ya what. When the next module come out, I am going to make his spells not work just to show him its a waste of time."
Other PC's: "Thats cool."
DM: "Now dont tell him ok."

No big secert. No evil motives. Nothing.

Now I might have missed the "prank" and if I did please enlighten me.

My question is sooooo annoying and I certainly don't intend this as needling or confrontational but why do you respond so strongly to accusations of paranoia? Is this something that you can let roll off your back or is this something you have difficulty with in other parts of your life?

Clearly your friends didn't take your feelings into consideration when they April Fooled you and you've stated that you let them know how it made you feel after they (the DM) pulled this stunt. How did they respond to you expressing your lack of appreciation for the joke? How is the friendship doing?

as for if i've done anything to provoke this: mabie I guess.

It also sounds like you are playing a very different style of DnD from the rest of your group. I played with a guy who played like you do in a group that was a lot more relaxed about little things like 'rules'. What ended up working out for him was that he worked with the DM to be a living rules book, he got to induldge in his desire for more consistency in the application of the rules, the DM became more careful and began applying the rules more uniformly and everybody else still got to play a game where they didn't have to worry about learning and knowing all of the rules in order to have a good time.

Good luck with your gaming, I hope this situation is resolved!

Awesome...
You know, someday I'll understand why DM's lack the two fingers of forehead needed to make of adivination a spell wich enchances gameplay instead of encouraging the players to not use that school and to even barren it.

Simply put...you need a more competent DM, as I said before, you'd do much better in a game o' mine if not for the distance >.<

so heres the scoop..

in a prevous session there was an NPC who was going to help us but I (apperarently bieng over paranoid) casted det evil on him and the dm told me "he doesent regester- you can't detect anything" and implied that somehow I could normally detect at least the preasence of other creatures even though they wernt evil, and that this was a special case where I failed to detect anything at all, let alone something evil.

well, lets ignore how det evil works and skip to me thinking it was odd and casting divination to find out wether we shuld trust this "non alignment radiating" NPC. after 1/2 hour he says "he will take you to where you need to go" and when we go there, the NPC betrays us and screws everything.

A good DM does not conspire with the other players just to put someone else down. They might have intended it to be funny, but they should realize by now that it wasn't received that way. Casting those Detect spells was a smart thing to do, and the DM should have rewarded you for that kind of thinking: not put you down.

If you ask me, that's a pretty bad DM. I don't know if this is too late, but I'd make it clear that it was not funny to you. If something like this happens again, try to find a new group.

Oh, and by the way. Maraxus had a nice idea. :D

the part where the table erupts with laughter and pointing fingers. at me. (ha ha bob your so paranoid!)

So you never laughed at a friend?

(ha ha bob your so cumlsy)

Just because they laugh at you does not mean that they do not like you. They can still be your friends. Now if this is always happening to you then that is a different story. But I dont think that is the case. You even admitted that you all pull small pranks on each other. I still dont consider it a prank. And I think your being a little childish. If you have taken part in pranks with these same people in the past, then you have to accept the fact that one day you will be pranked yourself. You are just upset that they got you. And that they Tarnished the game of D&D. If you had told them before that you dont like pranks and they played one on you anyway, well thats different as well. Even if you had never said anything, but refused to partake in the pranks in the past then I could see you being upset.
