| Cooconutmaster10-18-06, 07:58 PM | Well my dm is the one that complains and bands every character idea i come up with...and thinks of ways to make it bad....like he said that to use wepon finesse you have to use it on Melee Wepons only...with that you can use swashbucklers ablity on throwing daggers...basicly every one that he has known for a long time has characters that are min/maxed of the top...every time i try to make a ok character...then they try to make them selfs all big and bad....then one time i got a character by my dm and after the 7 session they thought they could kill me cause i was getting all big and bad....you know the ending of that one....i killed them all...that what the funnest day i had |
| Godzilla10-18-06, 08:09 PM | Why don't you tell him that you're tired of all that stuff instead of make it one giant sentence here? That'd solve a lot more problems, and maybe he'd understand you. |

| Titan W10-18-06, 08:26 PM | Not only that but there are only 11 core weapons that benefit, none do more than D6 damage and with using dex to attack it means your damage + is inevitably lower than your "to hit" + from ability scores as you still add STR to damage. meaning that you are really less effective than the greatsword weilding barbarian until you start using two weapons... and if he says that the greatsword rage and power atttack are broken show him the druid spell list and abilities. However looking at your last sentence it seems that your characters are stronger than the rest of your party, if you could kill them all off. As a result maybe you should look at that angle of things as well. (Also, sentences are your friends, as are single periods. three of them mean you are insinuating something that remains unsaid, or are continuing at a later time.) |
| Alacar_Deathstone10-18-06, 10:50 PM | G-g-g-grammar? *shivers* Anyways, coming from the viewpoint of a DM, I somewhat understand where he/she is coming from; what is the fun of one of the players in the party completely overshadowing the rest? Perhaps he has attempted to shoot down your attempts at character creation in an effort to balance out the party. What was the justification for the character killing? I rarely (A.K.A Never) see any reason for a character in a party to turn on the others. Is it not the party's job, in a sense, to cooperate? Dungeons and Dragons is not a competition to make the "uberest" (sp? forget it...) character. I've run into players before who try to come up with the most outrageous character concepts, merely trying to see how far they can push the limits of the DM's acceptance. Not saying you are doing this, but that could be the case. There isn't anything inherently wrong with that, as it allows one to become more familiar with the D20 ruleset, and become adept at its usage. However, it can become tiresome for a DM to encounter this constantly. Maybe he is tired of your powerful characters? I really have no clue. All in all, your best option is to talk directly to him/her. Explain to your DM what the situation is, telling him/her that you're tired of being shot down every time you come up with an interesting idea. I've had players come to me before, and believe me, it really works. Players showing actual interest in a campaign beyond merely showing up makes the DM feel great :D The fact that you are WANTING to get this resolved says enough : you like the DM enough to want to continue playing in his/her game. Take a few Tylenol, sleep it over, and talk to your DM in the morning :P |

| ressurrector10-18-06, 11:19 PM | It sounds like everyone else is incapable of making an effective character, or they just don't know the rules. Try to help them make effective characters, if they still suck than just downplay your character to their level. It's no fun if one person overshadows everyone else. |
| Reversefigure410-18-06, 11:59 PM | he said that to use wepon finesse you have to use it on Melee Wepons only... Assuming I haven't completely misintepreted what this means (very possible), your DM is entirely right. Weapon Finesse does only work on melee weapons, and only light melee weapons at that (and a handful of exceptions like rapier). |
| Alacar_Deathstone10-19-06, 12:22 AM | I think what he was saying was that his party turned on him and tried to kill him, but he managed to kill them instead. I'm sure such a situation could have been avoided, but sorry, I didn't catch that. Really tired here, when I posted that I was on the tail-end of the midnight shift at work. Now I'm home, and even more tired :D But that wasn't really my main point. My main point, and I reiterate it now, is that he should discuss this with his DM. Like I said, coming from the perspective of a long-time DM, he could work more out in 10 minutes than with a week of getting suggestions on this board, if he had a chat with the 'ole Dungeon Master. EDIT: Perhaps if that was my main point, I should have wrote more than a few lines on it...sorry about the confusion, it was in no way an attack on the OP. |
| fullmetal8011010-19-06, 12:46 AM | I had a DM like that, I made an Ogre barbarian, which is fine in itself but then went frenzied bezerker, my DM said if I switched characters I could play whatever I wanted. |
| Mitchell10-20-06, 03:51 AM | So, you are telling us this because...? Your question is...? My question is why don't you just find a new group, then? It's obvious that you don't care too much for the people you are playing with now. I would rather not play than play with people that made my time playing miserable. |

| Cifer10-20-06, 09:16 AM | meaning that you are really less effective than the greatsword weilding barbarian until you start using two weapons... Depends... one has only so many good ability scores, after all. Dexterity has quite a lot of uses and is often argued to be a "stronger" stat than Strength - adding one isn't exactly "less effective" or "more effective", it all depends on what other options there were. I had a DM like that, I made an Ogre barbarian, which is fine in itself but then went frenzied bezerker, my DM said if I switched characters I could play whatever I wanted. Well, as I already said in the other thread: People who play FBs say to me "I don't care about my group squishies as long as I can deal lots of damage!" |
| dragonseth10-20-06, 11:34 AM | Well, as I already said in the other thread: People who play FBs say to me "I don't care about my group squishies as long as I can deal lots of damage!" Personally, I like Frenzied Berserkers. And I warn my party well in advance if I'm going to play one. If they say 'no', fine, but usually they take the risk so we can have fun (the point). FB's are perhaps the most fun PrC I've ever played. Coming up with creative ways to neutralize him, or run away, what have you, is always fun. And, if for some reason they can't stop him and I keep rolling 1's on my Will save, we get to see if I'm strong enough to kill the rest of the party (which I always wonder about). Either way, fun stuff happens. To add to the discussion, could you repost that with proper grammar? I can't understand what you're saying right now, my eyes are bleeding. |
| On_the_wings_of_TPK10-20-06, 01:54 PM | To add to the discussion, could you repost that with proper grammar? I can't understand what you're saying right now, my eyes are bleeding. Here let me give it a shot: Greetings. Recently my DM has developed an alarming trend. That is to say that he is concerned about the power level of the characters I am presenting for concideration in his game. For instance he ruled that the insightful strike ability of the swash buckler class, found in the complete warrior does not aply to ranged attacks including thoughs made with my set of throwing daggers.(TPK's Note: The DM in this case is correct as, the insightful strike ability specifies melee attacks only. TPKs note II: I interprit it as insightful strike, becuase one uses the dex to ranged attacks anyways. Having to make a ruling about weapon finnesse and ranged attacks is silly.) I believe that this is becuase other players, and myself, have presetned overly power characters, whitch he allowed. They then proved to be unbalancing for his DMing style, and it left a bad taste in his mouth. Such as the time he allowed, one character of mine, that after seven sessions became very powerful indeed. So powerful infact that the rest of the party attempted to attack and kill my character. Unforchunately for them, it proved too strong for them to handle, and they perished in the atempt. I am only trying to build a character that is ok, and not overly powerful. But I would like it to be very powerful after a few sessions. TPKs note III: At this point though it is unclear as to just what exactly he is asking for. I believe it is either advice on how to build a balanced character, or iperhaps advice on how to approach his DM, and reassure him that his character is not broken. Or maybe he is asking us how to sneak a broken character past his DM. Again, I'm not quiet sure, I do appologise. |
