| Mocab01-10-07, 09:25 PM | Ok, so the DM doesnt like my dwarf fighter cause at lvl 7 I get +19 to my attack and +13 to my DMG as a dual wielder. He tries to kill me each time we play. He says its cause I do double the DMG the others do and I have twice as much hit pionts. I dont think its me its the rest of the group. I carefully select all my feats and weapons to optimize my dwarfs fighting ability. He says that he has a problem cause I can kill stuff by my self that would kill the rest of the group and that to save the rest of the group he must lower the monsters so they dont die but I kill them to fast. So what should I do? Make a new charecter? |

| Reversefigure401-10-07, 09:54 PM | So what should I do? Make a new character? Bluntly, yes. Your character is obviously ludicrously over-optimised for your group, and it's unbalancing the game. Either make a new, less optimised character, or, if you like your current character, ask the DM if you can switch around some of your dwarfs weapons, feats, etc, and make him less potent. |
| Kas01-10-07, 10:08 PM | Don't change anything about your character. Obviously, this DM has no idea how to completely render a melee type useless. Tell him to modify his monsters and how they attack the group, such as flying monsters or spellcasters or whatever. There are lots of ways to negate that high attack bonus and damage. And honestly, those attack and damage bonuses aren't obscenely optimized. You can attain close to that, if not higher, at lower levels relatively easy. |
| BloodSpill01-10-07, 10:15 PM | The other, more fun option, would be to rebuild everyone elses' characters. That said, +19 at 7th level! Wow! Him trying to kill your character at every opportunity is BAD. He should have obviously talked to you about it. Handling it any other way is ridiculous. Remind the DM of the following: No matter how awesome a fighter is, spellcasters are going to catch up in power as levels increase. A front-line fighter is supposed to have double the hitpoints of any other character, as well as being able to deal damage out to everyone/out damage everyone in melee. That is what they are for. Reducing your effectiveness is as simple as sending more monsters at the party. If he just sends big, single CR 7 creatures at the party, you're expected to decimate them. These encounters should be balanced out by ones where there's as many creatures as there are members of your party. That way, the creatures are weaker but everyone gets a turn at killing. |
| trapspringer01-10-07, 10:18 PM | We need more information. With more information we can probably solve this problem without having to change anything at all. Post the build, your dwarf's gear (I get a kick outa' the way you talk about that: "I carefully select all my feats and weapons to optimize my dwarfs fighting ability," definitely bonus points for that), and anything else you think is pertanent to the situation (like the party make-up and allowed source material). |
| Yokomohoyo01-11-07, 01:19 AM | Dont make a new character. Just chill out and sit back during some fights ( you know... "A giant is infront of you what do you do?" "Well I just reserve my action untill everyone else has gone" Type thing) and just set your character to guard mode for a wile. It should help. |
| EscherEnigma01-11-07, 02:38 AM | Couple of ways to approach this. As I see it, main ways are 1) Try to help the other players make their characters more effective/optimized to catch up in power to your character 2) Try to help the DM design encounters that are still a fair challenge to your character as well as the other characters or 3) Design a new character that is more in line with the power level of the other characters Specific strategies for any of these three goals will vary, but thats how I think it breaks down. Oh, and how the heck did you get +19 at level 7? With two-weapon penalties? Is the DM way too lax with treasure along with obscene stats or something? |
| christOrisen01-11-07, 02:53 AM | Ok, so the DM doesnt like my dwarf fighter cause at lvl 7 I get +19 to my attack and +13 to my DMG as a dual wielder. He tries to kill me each time we play. So what should I do? Make a new charecter? Are you a straight fighter? I think it is DMs responsibility, not yours, if he wants a balanced game. he can always make a point of placing magic items that favor the other PCs if you are too powerful. AS long as you are not improperly stacking or using loopholes, I see no problem with the character. |
| Cold Napalm01-11-07, 03:07 AM | Okay I too wanna know how your getting these number...I smell something wrong here. |
| Ryu Katsuragi01-11-07, 04:25 AM | Especially with Two-Weapon Fighting... if you're straight Fighter, you have at least +21 to hit. Assuming Strength 18, being generous and saying a +4 belt: +6. Greater/Weapon Focus: +2 +2 weapons: +2 BAB: +7 There's +17, to +15 from Two-Weapon Fighting. Any other ideas? |
| Potato Weasel01-11-07, 07:58 AM | you cant get greater weapon focus at seventh level though. I'm thinking it may be a joke post. Unless he has a +5 sword of why the heck do i have this already. |
| Ryu Katsuragi01-11-07, 09:01 AM | Ah, sorry - Lot of this is guesswork, honestly (havn't played a Fighter before, so. xD) |
| On_the_wings_of_TPK01-11-07, 10:32 AM | Hmm: Well for the damage bonus of +13, he either has a stregth score of 36, or a magic weapon of +lots. Assuming he has a strength score of 36 then his attack bonus makes sense as well. +13 strength, +7 bab, +1 from master work weapon, or weapon focus, -2 TWF/GTWF= Attack/per round +19/+19/+19/+14. I am howver at a lose as to exactly how to achieve a stregnth score of 36, by 7th level |
| starfire31101-11-07, 12:28 PM | ok lets figrue out the strength score level 7 fighter, with Weapon Focus, and weapon spec, and lets give him a +3 magic weapon, with TWF this gives us +9 to attack and +5 damage to get this +19 and +13 he needs at least a +8 strength mod, so he has a 26 strength, this still leaves him missing a a +2 unnamed bonus to attack rolls, maybe he si not counting his penalties from TWF this would give us a 26 str, +3 magic weapon, and WF, and WS and a +19 attack and +13 damage before TWF penalties. |
| Falln01-11-07, 12:43 PM | Maybe the DM doesn't like PC's that are only build for hack'n slash. Maybe he also likes some stuff out of combat. We have the same kind of guy with us: a halfling who only gets active when he can kill something or can loot some gold. If Dnd was for real we would have left that guy behind. |
| wonlee7601-11-07, 12:47 PM | Ok, so the DM doesnt like my dwarf fighter cause at lvl 7 I get +19 to my attack and +13 to my DMG as a dual wielder. He tries to kill me each time we play. He says that he has a problem cause I can kill stuff by my self that would kill the rest of the group and that to save the rest of the group he must lower the monsters so they dont die but I kill them to fast. So what should I do? Make a new charecter? First: Tell your DM to tsop handing out too many magical items. The only way I figure you can have a +19 to attack and +13 to damage is due to too many magical items or he's giving out templates like candy that is increasing your strength score. Based on the DMG wealth chart, I could easily see TWF bonuses to be around the +16 to hit, +11 to damage (+8 for offhand). Second: If its not the magical stuff, it may be due to you adding things up in the wrong way but without knowing more details who knows. Double check your figures. Third: Dude, you're the tank... is it that big of a surprise that monsters would choose to attack you first especially considering you apparently are dishing out damage a lot higher than the rest of the group? Any semi-intelligent monster will choose to take you out first since you're the biggest threat. Now if he's designing overpowered monsters just to deal with you, that's a different story. Your DM is in a tough situation with one highly optimized PC and the others being no where near as optimized. You can either bite the bullet and voluntarily retire and re-create your PC or deal with the consequences which will be either bad guys that are no challenge to you but a challenge to the group or bad guys that are a big challenge to you but an impossible challenge for your group. |

We have the same kind of guy with us: a halfling who only gets active when he can kill something or can loot some gold. If Dnd was for real we would have left that guy behind. A bit of assumption there, isn't it? Just because his character excels in combat doesn't mean the player nods off for the rest of the game. Optimization and roleplaying aren't mutually exclusive. |

| goldjas01-11-07, 06:32 PM | hmm, if hes really a straight level 7 Dwarf fighter theres no way he could get to +19 attack (though he could get close...but not with TWF) unless is DM gave hiim Treasure way beyond his level, or his ECL actually isn't 7, but something much higher from templates, etheir way, that would be his DMs fault(from using the Template rules wrong or from giving out way to much treasure), and not completely his. |
| Animae_Draconum01-11-07, 06:46 PM | Last time I checked gloves of true strike were well within the affordability of all players second level and above. While your DM would have to be an idiot to allow such insanity. |
| Mocab01-11-07, 08:50 PM | Sorry ive been gone. Any way I have 26 str, +3 weapon, and Weapon Focus, and Weapon Specialization. Feats are just basic PA, cleave, greater cleave. See at lvl 4 we did a gladiator pit type thing and I won alot of money.... This isnt my fault. I am just gonna hit harder now cause I got like 25k gold and when I get to a town im gonna upgrade more. |

How does a level 7 dwarf have a 26 strength? 18 Starting +6 Strength Enhancement Item +1 from Level 4... 25 max unless its a dwarven subrace that gives a +2 to Strength... Either way the "bigger" problem is your DM gave out too many goodies and gold. That's the "real" reason things got messed up but if you are that wealthy in items, the rest of your allies should also be equally wealthy... |
| Animae_Draconum01-11-07, 09:38 PM | How does a level 7 dwarf have a 26 strength? The same way anyone else has high stats at low levels, they pencil it in on their character sheet, or they have house rules that allow for obscene stats. I play in a campaign that uses such modified rules but fortunately for us the campaign has remained balanced and we dont have DM vs PC hate. A_D |
| Lord_Panda01-11-07, 10:04 PM | Any way I have 26 str, +3 weapon, and Weapon Focus, and Weapon Specialization. Feats are just basic PA, cleave, greater cleave. See at lvl 4 we did a gladiator pit type thing and I won alot of money.... This isnt my fault. I am just gonna hit harder now cause I got like 25k gold and when I get to a town im gonna upgrade more. That's your problem right there. As wonlee76 mentioned, the issue isn't with you, it's with your DM. The expected wealth for level 7 is 19,000 gp. In other words, a typical 7th level character could afford one of your +3 weapons, and not even have enough money left over for a normal suit of full plate. Even with your obscene wealth (you didn't give us a complete list, but I'd estimate that you have at least five times the expected amount) the other party members should be doing a great deal. A cleric can hit at +15 with a lower base strength than yours, just two spells, and no magic items whatsover. Add in a +3 weapon and the Weapon Focus, and suddenly he hits as well as you, and can also do deccent damage. This all but ignores the main strength of the cleric class: the number of very powerful spells that they get. A wizard can cast Haste to greatly increase the offense of the rest of the party, Slow to keep the enemies from taking full attacks, or Evard's Black Tentacles to immobilze and hurt the foes unless they beat a +15 grapple check. Even the lowly Magic Missle will average fourteen damage, which should be almost as much as you do on your first attack. Fireballs and Lightning Bolts do damage in the mid twenties to multiple foes, and can strike at range. Meanwhile, a simple, unoptomized rogue should be putting out about twenty damage on a sneak attack, which should be easy to get when you're standing in the thick of things as a flanking partner. Sure, it's not as much striking power as you have, but rogues focus as much on non-combat abilities as combat ones, while just about the only thing you can do as a fighter is fight. Are you the only one with this much loot? Even if you are, the rest of the party should be able to do a lot. If you aren't, then the only way that they can be ineffective is if they don't care about combat at all. If you are the only one with all the money, talk to the DM and tell him how imbalancing it is. I'd say that it's worth considerably more than the half-dragon template, and that template costs three levels. You may want to retire the character, donate some of his loot to charity, have the money and items stolen, or one of any number of other solutions to the problem. |
| Prime36101-11-07, 10:14 PM | The other, more fun option, would be to rebuild everyone elses' characters. I second that idea, don't rebuild your toon, help te rest of the group to make their's better. |
| Salla01-12-07, 12:46 AM | I think the correct option is to look at the DM and say, "Well, if you hadn't handed me five or six times the anticipated wealth for a PC of my level, I wouldn't be overpowered. Now that we've got that straightened out, let's work up a decent way to get some of this stuff off me and gotten rid of that doesn't involve killing my character." |
| Cold Napalm01-12-07, 02:47 AM | Okay...so your overpowered because you have in just TWO items over 5 times what your suppose to have with 25k in gold LEFT?!? Okay monty haul anyone? If the other players aren't hauling around that much treasure, no wonder they are so behind. This means you need to get in line with their treasure level. Also if your in CR 7 enounters, with that much over equipment, your actually closer to ECL 10 or even 11. edit: PS I think your DM needs to get on here and get some advice/explain himself. I'm hoping he's new and he just doesn't know what he is doing at this point. |
| Knight991001-12-07, 03:14 AM | Dude...YOU'RE A DWARVEN FIGHTER. If you DIDN'T deal more damage and have more hitpoints then the rest of the group, THEN there would be something wrong. |
| Mrloki01-12-07, 03:20 AM | I think the question nobody is asking is....do the other players mind? Cause this ain't dm v.s. PC. If the other players are having fun, then by golly the DM is already on the right track to success. Also how long has your DM been DMing? Cause if he hasn't been going for very long you might want to give him a mullagin on your loot. How long have you been playing as well, long enough to "optimize" your character. So you should try to understand the problem your DM is having. |
| Cold Napalm01-12-07, 03:36 AM | actually by the way the DM is accused of acting, even if the players don't mind, the DM might. Happy players at the cost of the DM's fun is bad just as much as the reverse. Like honestly, there is something seriously fubared here that it warrents a group sit and talk session. |
| starfire31101-12-07, 09:25 AM | this would give us a 26 str, +3 magic weapon, and WF, and WS and a +19 attack and +13 damage before TWF penalties. Any way I have 26 str, +3 weapon, and Weapon Focus, and Weapon Specialization. just wanted to say, I called it. anyway if you are Feats are just basic PA, cleave, greater cleave. Ok, so the DM doesnt like my dwarf fighter cause at lvl 7 I get +19 to my attack and +13 to my DMG as a dual wielder. ok so since you didn't take the TWF feat(I seriously hope you jsut didn't mention it(because you only listed 5 feats and you should have 7) you will have massive penalties on your attack roll, even if you did take it, you are still only +17/+12, which is very nice at level 7, but IMO not enough to make your DM cry foul. The big problem is your vast treasure, at level 7 with the amount of treasure you have you are more like a level 9 character. Oh and the fact that I can't figure out how you got that 26 str, maybe you got a manual of strength. |
| Animae_Draconum01-12-07, 10:17 AM | I'm still laughing about Great Cleave every time I see this thread. What a joke... Anyway its party wealth, all you need is an uber high level rogue to gank your stuff while you sleep and the problem is solved. And tell your party to stop playing Commoner 20 |
| Grogmir01-12-07, 10:51 AM | Don’t know why people think Great Cleave is a joke. I do understand that the way a lot of people play D and D is to chuck 1 hard guy at them because they can’t be bothered to run loads of creatures but if you DO then great cleave is great. Once a (large) group of goblins IIRC, were attacking our base at night. It was a major plot hook and the DM was determined to catch us alive. The fighter (not very high at most Level 4, took out nearly 20 of em in his first attack, this carried on for a few more attacks, 15 killed then 30 you get the idea. The DM then had to rule that the whole Goblin tribe had been wiped out in this one attack, Hundreds dead in the space of a few seconds! I don’t know anyother feat that can do that! Just my two cents Grogmir. |
| trapspringer01-12-07, 12:51 PM | Great cleave can only kill eight guys under normal circumstances. Supreme cleave sounds more like what you are thinking of, unless the goblins were swarm-fighting. Anyway, for this particular dwarf it was a great feat because he can deal illogical ammounts of damage against opponents with not-too-many hit points. Back on topic: Your DM screwed up. Donate a bunch of money to 'da church along with that girdle and you'll be fine. Talk to your DM and see if he won't recompense you with a +1 enhancement bonus to your strength for being such a co-operative and helpful player. |

Just my two cents Grogmir. The situation stated above is impossible under normal rules, how are you getting to 20 enemies? The below situation is only possible with a Spiked Chain after you are entirely surrounded. XXXXX XXXXXXX XXX*XXX XXXXXXX XXXXX Neither Cleave or Great Cleave allow for a 5 ft step between attacks. Youre right there isnt any other feat that allows you to do that because even this one doesnt work that way. Not to mention that your DM was just dumb to send that many weak goblins at a party, absolute slaughter is a given. I can only hope you were not awarded full exp. Its not even the Chuck one hard guy at the party set up that shuts down Great Cleave, the likelyhood of dropping more than one opponent in a single round is so unlikely I shouldnt even have to mention it. I challenge you to present a situation where your claim is possible using Fighter 4. A_D |
| Kursk01-12-07, 06:40 PM | 26 Str @ 7th level? Are you playing D&D? |
| DmMagnus01-12-07, 06:54 PM | 26 Str @ 7th level? Are you playing D&D? My thoughts exactly... +3 weapons? [W]hiskey [T]ango [F]oxtrot? This is way to huge strenght, and way to good magic items:P Well Its your game.. I think its a joke post. But If it isn`t the point is what do the other players think? do they get borde because you are to powerfull (then something has to be done), if they are ok with it.. It doesnt matter.. Everyone is having fun no problem! |
| CrimsonEric01-12-07, 07:03 PM | My question is this: Is your DM really trying to 'kill you' or is he realizing he fudged up and trying to find ways to challenge you (and you're just being a poor sport)? Seems likely to me that if you're that advanced compared to your group, and your DM - for whatever reason - dosent want to take anything from you (possibly to avoid more 'poor me' *****ing) that he would deem it fair to sick more challenging opponents on you until your pals catch up. Im not saying that its a great solution, but since you're whining about it here my guess is that you're whining about it to him too, and he probably realizes that this will get less griping and moaning than admitting he messed up and taking stuff back from you. |
| kelvinaw27301-12-07, 08:38 PM | Your wealth level is the real problem, and your strength. Just running into somebody with a wand of enfeeblement is going to be BAD NEWS for this character. If he really wants to get you and the party though, a foe who can use Domination is going to do untold damage. Then there are simpler ways of getting you - op[ponants with Improved Initiative, high dexterity and Grapple you will cause trouble. One to grapple, one to sneak attack you, for example. Foes at range cannot be fun. Is your DM trying to kill you? Well, any foe that sees your party comming will know about the Invincible Fighter and be ready to take you down with some cunning spells and tricks. I recall a dwarf fighter being taken out with an assassin vine once ... he had to be rescued by the rogue and monk in the party who eventually pruned him free ... Thing is, your fighter has a number of weaknesses that you haven't covered: low Will and Reflex saves are two of them. Poor Touch AC is another. You cannot expect a wily foe not to exploit them. |
| Mocab01-12-07, 09:45 PM | Well in battle the other day he gets mad and says, " Ok 3 stone golems pop out the ground and attack you. Im tired of how you hit so much. It all just pisses me off so much. |

It all just pisses me off so much. Your DM made a mistake. From what I read here he has told you about it a few times. Maybe he's afraid to simply ask you (the player) to correct some of the mistakes he made. Maybe you've said to him: you gave it to me, it's your fault, I'm not changing. If your character isn't balanced in his campaign and you refuse to change your character, then you need to find an other play group, your DM has to change or your PC needs to die. |
| kelvinaw27301-13-07, 03:15 PM | To players and DMs out there: The lesson of this thread is - (1) don't let the PCs get hold of too much treasure, it unbalances the game. (2) If you find the game is unbalanced, don't try to rebalance it by punishing the PCs - talk to the player in question and work out a way of redressing the balance everyone is happy with. (3) If you are the player that has too much wealth, be prepared to sacrifice it for the good of everyone's enjoyment of the game and the DM's blood pressure. |
| Cold Napalm01-13-07, 05:53 PM | Ok, so the DM doesnt like my dwarf fighter cause at lvl 7 I get +19 to my attack and +13 to my DMG as a dual wielder. Actually from reading everything that happened, I think the problem might be YOU. You have 5x the normal treasure and you think it might be the other players?!? I think the DM might, just might have been asking you to change and you took it the wrong way if you can't see past this point. In anycase the situation has gone beyond repairs since you didn't bother to talk with the DM about the treasure issue when you had the chance like we ALL TOLD YOU TO. Sigh...why bother posting if your not gonna listen...oh well. |
| bholdr_mage01-13-07, 08:05 PM | Dwarves don't move fast. Many monsters do. Spring attack negates your TWF. While dwarves get +2 bonus on spells, simple spells like suggestion and hold person can be your worse nightmare. Heck, paralysis from ghouls work just fine. Your DM is giving out waaaay too much stuff. Heck, I don't even let my players have access to a +3 weapon until 9-10th level...and that's just one! I generally put items in 5 categories divisible by wealth. 1-4 is the first category; 5-9 is the second, 10-14th is the third, 15th-18th is the fourth and 19-20 is the 5th. Stopping a dwarven fighter at 7th level is never a problem. Sunder? Disarm? Slow spell? Geez. Tell your DM to not monty haul and to think outside the damage box. |

| Azar_of_Faerun01-15-07, 12:44 AM | Wow, this thread evolved from * wanting to help the OP to -> * curiosity and calculation over his "build" to -> * criticism of the OP and his DM as if it brought satisfaction, and offering no real resolution to who needed it most  |
| Cold Napalm01-15-07, 02:02 AM | Umm no we did give advice of power down the items. Talk with the DM about it, but he went ahead in another game with the DM without doing so which lead to the DM calling the final straw and pulling a TPK. The DM obviously partially to blame, but since we have NO input from him we have no idea exactly how much...but we do know the OP did not take the advice given and the OP is oblivious enough to think that him having 5x the normal treasure isn't him, it's the other players... |
