My DM is farely easy going when it comes to charecter creation as long as its in a book we or he has we can use. I recently purchased the psionics handbook because i wanted to try sumthing new. I created a 1st level soulknife to play for our most recent game. I showed up and he said no to me charecter. Are psionic charecters overpowered and i just dont see it or do you think my DM just doesnt want any psionics. What should i do.

Thanks

Psionics are not overpowered, as long as the campaign is at least moderately psionic. As a stand-alone character in an otherwise nonpsionic campaign, I can easily understand disallowing your character.

I suppose you can ask him if he'd want to run a psionics-heavy campaign.

It is a full 20 level class now.

There was a long discussion over this and the general consnesus I believe was that most DM's don't allow it because they simply don't know much about psionics. Just one more set of rules that the DM must identify and adjust too.

Personally I really don't like psionics, but I do not think that they are overpowered though. I even have players who use them. Just a DM's discretion.

In my games I'm very liberal with what I allow as well. I allow the psionics, but I am familiar with them from all editions. One of the DMs in our group personally dislikes them and therefore has never gotten to know them. He disallowed psionics in the games he ran. When we decided to run a full campaign with rotating DMs we had to figure out what to do. One of the players wanted to play a soulknife. We decided to allow it with the caveat if the character is too powerful then the player will need to create something new. So far, every DM (including him) has enjoyed having that PC in the group. Ask your DM if you can play one under the same circumstances.

As to your question why your DM doesn't allow psionic characters, I think he may be better suited to answering that himself.

Just ask the DM why he rejected the character. He may just not want psionics of any kind in his world (“psionics” doesn’t exist in mine).

I don't allow psionics in mine, because its a whole other rules set when I'm still not entirely grasping the details of the main set. It adds another level of complexity and your DM might not want to deal with it.

If your DM does not own XPH, then loan him your copy so he can get a feel for the system. Once he gets used to it, he will see that the Soulknife is not too much.
And shame on your DM!! If the understood rule of his game is that if it is in a book that is available, whether his or yours, it is allowed, then your DM has committed a breach of etiquette.

Most DM's I've known since 1st Ed don't like psionics. That's why it was taken out as a standardly available character choice in 3.x Ed. Just the way it's always been. Nothing wrong with wanting to try it though. Probably your DM just doesn't care for it.

Sounds to me like you picked up a book and made a character from it, then brought it to play before the DM ever had a chance to read the rules for it. Any DM in there right mind wouldn't allow that. Give him a chance to read up on it himself before expecting him to let you play with those rules.

Psionics seem to me as a sorceror who casts spells, but can only cast 1st level spells. The benefit being he can upgrade his 1st levels spells to higher levels*. I dunno, psionics seems to have lost much of it's flavor as a unique system since the incarnation I saw it in (2nd edition). But it is much more functional (my opinion of course).

What do you think we are; psychic? Why are you asking us why your DM didn't allow the character? Why don't you ask your DM?

And while I'm on a run of questions; why do I see some many of this type of question on these boards? Do people not speak to each other outside the game or something? I just don't get it.
