| Arcturos12-05-07, 04:08 PM | At the end of our last adventure the DM declared that(among other things) my character was now a lich(no alignment change). I hadn't really planned on my character becoming a lich in this campaign, so I hadn't really planned my character around it and now I need some advice on how to work with it. My character just leveled up to 12(Wiz-6/Ftr-1/EldritchKnight-4/Spellsword-1) and I have two spells to choose(up to 5th level). Advice on a few good ones to keep my character alive(undead?) would be helpful. Also, for some reason or another he made my phylactery a rune-engraved hunk of metal melded with the flesh on my chest, some advice on how to deal with that would also be appreciated. I also have a feat to choose. Thanks.:D |
| pokemaniacbill12-05-07, 04:21 PM | Stupid question here, but, uh... What flesh? |
| Arcturos12-05-07, 04:36 PM | The dead flesh. Becoming a lich doesn't automatically make me rotted as if I was already dead for a century. |
| Mindolin12-05-07, 04:42 PM | First of all, you can not become a lich unless you decide to. Thus, the DM cannot just make you a lich unless you want to become one. Second: get that hunk of metal off of you! If it's there, you are easy to kill. Take it off and bury it somewhere in a graveyard. Should have PLENTY of bodies to use if you die. Third: A lich can have flesh, it will just decay in short order, but they still have it if recently deceased. I'll look up some spells you might want, but anything that enhances Fort saves works wonders, since you'll otherwise be at the mercy of Disintigrate (trust me, if I took out the Lich Queen of the Githyanki with that spell, you can be taken out) |
| Grand_Commander1312-05-07, 04:47 PM | First thing I'd do with that phylactery is rip it out of my chest, polymorph myself into a form I could travel in disguise as, and then bury it in the middle of nowhere. Perhaps at the bottom of the ocean, using a Transmute Mud to Rock scroll (of the waterproof variety). I mean, come on, what self-respecting undead would walk around with the ONE object that sees to it that he is revived if he is killed? |

Your best option is to become melancholy and despondant and disintegrate yourself. |

The kind that travels with a goblin cleric wearing a red cloak and a mysterious monster that allways walks around surrounded in darkness even on a bright sunny day. And is a whiny little twit |
| Balseraph12-05-07, 04:55 PM | I apologize for the flippancy, but the first thing I thought of was: "Your DM made you a lich? Awww, that's really nice of him, I only made my players cookies!" Seriously though, dump that phylactery somewhere safe! More importantly, a friendly chat with your DM might be in order. Asking why he has just arbitrarily (from your perspective) made you into a lich without consultation could help perhaps. |
| Arcturos12-05-07, 04:57 PM | Oh yes, my restricted schools are Illusion and Conjuration. For anybody that was gonna suggest spells. This happened at the end of the adventure so we haven't had a chance to do anything yet, but I suspect just ripping the chestplate off probably isn't gonna be just that easy. The DM did something to all the other players, mine was probably the most straightforward. |
| toucanbuzz12-05-07, 04:57 PM | Rip out the phylactery and put it somewhere safe. You're dead, it won't hurt. Maybe Secret Chest (5th) is a good place to hide things for now. Make sure he lets you reroll d12 for hit points now that you're undead (all current and future rolls). Don't be afraid to stock up on spells you normally wouldn't drop at your feet as you're immune to Mind, Cold, Electric, and stuff like Stinking Cloud and Cloudkill. Certain spells help undead. Enervation (4th) on yourself will give you 1d4x5 health for 1 hour. To prevent Decay, cast Gentle Repose (3rd) on yourself every week or so. Be prepared to get the best seat at your local bars with a Fear Aura. Just don't expect any swift service as it's likely the bartender will flee as well. :rimshot: |
| Salla12-05-07, 05:09 PM | Got a cleric in the group? If I'm remembering the rules right, a double Resurrection combo will work; the first one kills you, the second brings you back to real life. |
| Arcturos12-05-07, 05:10 PM | The kind that travels with a goblin cleric wearing a red cloak and a mysterious monster that allways walks around surrounded in darkness even on a bright sunny day. And is a whiny little twit Honestly we have a goblin swashbuckler with a goofy hat and barb/sorc that is half-shadow in the party. I have gentle repose and two clerics in the party(and I believe one can cast inflict spells spontaneously) but I don't want to be rid on the lichdom just yet and I don't want to have to rely on other party members for healing. |
| Etarnon12-05-07, 05:31 PM | I say go with it. Go to town, embrace your lichness. Don't hide your bones under a shroud. Terrorize the village, and claim, "BEING CURSED BY THE GODS MADE ME THIS WAY!" When the DM gets freaked out, claim "I'm only playing my character." Happy holidays. |
| Kiioro12-05-07, 05:52 PM | How are you going to get the Level Adjustment thingie done? Talk to your DM on the phone, because this will take some time to do. Are you going to forefeit some of your levels? Or just get the horrendous +7 (I think...) adjustment? Thankfully, you're very resistant to turn attempts and have various immunities, but it doesn't make you invincible. As most have said... GET THE PHILACTERY OUT OF THERE. Your (soon to be) bony a$$ depends on it. If you can hurl it inside a chest with 10 contingency spells and traps that's buried inside a complex cavern that's near a large orc community with no knowledge of your existence but territorial enough to fight to the death for it, you may be safe. Get bodies. If your body is destroyed, you can come back to another body (that's what the philactery is for, as long as it exists, you aren't killed). Gentle repose is a good way to preserve yourself. There are weapons that, when wielded, give off a blast of negative energy (can't remember the property's name). Negative energy heals you. Use it. |
| ZiggZagg12-05-07, 06:09 PM | You have two clerics, and you don't want to rely on other characters for healing? What else are clerics for, especially 2 of them |
| Ace_of_time12-05-07, 06:21 PM | What alignment is your group? On the bright side that is one of the best undead monster to be. With the right planing you could live forever. However this has the feel of some weird story plot. What kind of a DM breaks the rules just to make a PC a lich? |
| Ace_of_time12-05-07, 06:34 PM | Honestly we have a goblin swashbuckler with a goofy hat and barb/sorc that is half-shadow in the party. I have gentle repose and two clerics in the party(and I believe one can cast inflict spells spontaneously) but I don't want to be rid on the lichdom just yet and I don't want to have to rely on other party members for healing. You can use your touch attack on yourself to heal. |

| Arcturos12-05-07, 08:52 PM | I have played a lich before and know all the stats. If he tries to force me to take the level adjustment, then I'll probably just get resurrected back to life. Becoming a lich wasn't the worst one of the character changes. Some of the changes were not just breaking the rules but impossible in every way. |
| Ace_of_time12-05-07, 09:02 PM | If he gave everyone something that = +4 LA then nobody would need one. |
| Arcturos12-05-07, 09:24 PM | Well, not all the characters were the same level(lvls 10-12). Let's see, I got lich, somebody else got half-red dragon, a werewolf-vampire, the human barb/sorc became a warforged(ripoff)(but he got some stuff in an earlier adventure) , an aasimar, and here's the kicker... the human ranger, she became a hound archon. Well, the DM is saying that he isn't gonna apply the level adjustments normally. He say that he is gonna do something with them later. Alright, he's telling me that the chest plate is actually connect to the inside of my body, so i need a spell to get it off without killing myself cause he says that if I die I'll just come back to life with it attached again. |
| Legdiwena12-05-07, 09:32 PM | Hope the barb/sorc doesn't have ASF from armored plating. |
| Ixon12-05-07, 09:41 PM | He does. (Hello. I'm the friendly DM.) However, he plans on going Rage Mage to overcome that. Without spilling out carefully planned game sekrits, they have entirely new bodies. They have their old souls, but new bodies. Some are stronger, some are weaker, but all of them are under the control of a higher power. The Level Adjustment hasn't been factored in for a reason. |
| Legdiwena12-05-07, 09:43 PM | I say let the sorc take Unarmored Body |
| Ace_of_time12-06-07, 12:06 AM | Just add twilight to him/her self. That is the best part about the warforge. About the lich. Kill some one take that body some where private, maybe have your party members gaurd you. Destory your body in a way that destroys you body but not the stone. After your take back over the dead body you have with you then you can take the soul container and hide it safe away. Is the werewolf born were wolf or infected? |
| Wih12-06-07, 12:23 AM | I'm assuming the character in question has Practiced Spellcaster, as his CL is only 10 by levels and the CL needed for a Lich is 11... |
| metalmayhem8011012-06-07, 12:31 AM | [QUOTE=Balseraph;14509241]I apologize for the flippancy, but the first thing I thought of was: "Your DM made you a lich? Awww, that's really nice of him, I only made my players cookies!" QUOTE] Thank god I wasn't the only person to think like that... Honestly, I would go with it. Dark heros (Heros that use evil powers etc.) are my favorite thing to play. Or you could make yourself slowly slide of to the "dark side." When confronted about it, just say you don't know what is happeneing, it must be the undead part slowly pulling against your soul. |
| Ace_of_time12-06-07, 12:37 AM | PS feat would allow up to +4 to caster level upto his HD. |
| Kiioro12-06-07, 01:31 AM | Well, not all the characters were the same level(lvls 10-12). Arcturos: This means that the party's story will get quite interesting, the DM is here, so he can help you with the mechanics. This quite reminds me of the time we wiped out Talona's most important temple of evil followers, but then, our chaotic elf (*cough* my girlfriend *cough*) destroyed the Big Statue overflowing with unholy power. Hell, we went under quite... interesting changes. If you can't take the philactery off because of story needs, make sure you carry a bunch of defensive spells and a bada$$ armor. |
| Ayra12-06-07, 08:05 AM | You'd need caster level 11, the craft wondrous item feat and a whole lot of money and experience to become a Lich. Now that is only a book-rule, if the DM rule 0's it you're lucky. Of course if you don't want to play a lich, you should tell your DM so that he can devise a way for your character to return back to normal. Being a lich without meeting any of the prerequisites and possibly getting a low LA doesn't sound like a bad thing to me though! You can use things like alter self to look like a human. It would be rather interesting though to play a character that one day found himself in the body of a lich, without actually wanting to be one ;) |
| Nephlite12-06-07, 11:17 AM | Get bodies. Use it. 2nd edition advice only. In 3rd, you just regrow body. No other body needed. |
| PhaedrusXY12-06-07, 12:17 PM | Magic Jar works very well for a lich, though. ;) If your "host" gets killed, you return to your original body. If you are out of range... you still do, unless the DM makes you regrow a new one, even though your original is perfectly unharmed. |
| Ace_of_time12-06-07, 12:38 PM | Dracolich still works like that and it is 3.5? For them the dracolich returns to his box so to speak when it is destroyed. The it can take over any dead body near it. Once it has done that it reforms to a dracolich. Most think of the dead body as a Material comp for the reforming. |
| Legdiwena12-06-07, 12:56 PM | What is twilight for warforged? |
| Grumman12-06-07, 01:08 PM | What is twilight for warforged? Twilight is an armour enchantment which reduces the armour's spell failure chance when worn by an arcane spellcaster. |
| Legdiwena12-06-07, 01:23 PM | Would hope it would be a free enhancement for him. Otherwise, it's a case of DM screwing over the player. |
| Ace_of_time12-06-07, 02:36 PM | I think it is only a +1 bonus type but I don't have my book right now. |
| Ixon12-06-07, 08:09 PM | It is a +1 bonus, and is perfectly viable for the Warforged. |
| Legdiwena12-06-07, 08:19 PM | I wasn't saying the bonus was bad, just that it would suck to have to burn a feat or toss away money to cover for the DM hosing the character. |
| Grumman12-06-07, 11:58 PM | It is a +1 bonus, and is perfectly viable for the Warforged. It still sucks that the DM decided to screw around with other people's characters, seemingly out of a belief that the PCs weren't special enough. |
| Avatar of Kokusho12-07-07, 07:12 PM | If I were this player, I wouldn't complain...much. You're getting virtual indestructibility, decent abilities, and a party of others that can keep up with you even if you're very different (though I do kind of feel sorry for the vampire; I hope he has the ability to live through daylight) all for nothing. No LA. No XP cost. If it's something you honestly don't want, talk to your DM (He seems reasonable) about getting yourself fixed. Myself, I'd go with it. Having DM'ed for two lich PCs in the past, I can attest to their durability. I'm also assuming you got to keep your original alignment. Good man, Mr. DM. You sound creative. |
| Ace_of_time12-07-07, 08:54 PM | They said that they were in new bodies, Doesn't that means new racial bonus on physical stats? Wonder if the DM added those in also? |
| Arcturos12-08-07, 11:32 PM | The main reason I started the topic was to get advice on what my character needs to do, with my limited options, because we're not gonna be in a town quite a few adventure sessions, and I wasn't really prepared to be a lich. I do wish he would have asked first, though. |
| Avatar of Kokusho12-09-07, 10:02 AM | I can understand about the asking part; that isn't too much to expect. As for what to do, protect yourself from Disintegrate effects. You're pretty much immune to anything else that affects most creatures, and your fear aura can chase off foes that would otherwise be an annoyance. You don't have to worry overmuch about lack of food or water, and you only need to rest if you need to refresh your spells. Healing might be a problem- as an intelligent undead, you do heal naturally with rest, but all those Cure potions (if any) do you absolutely no good now. Don't forget that as a lich you can use your Charisma modifier rather than Con for Concentration checks. If you have access to a cleric and you're friendly with him or her, you can ask them to prepare a few inflict spells for healing purposes- Inflict spells are NOT evil, despite what some people seem to think, and even a good cleric can prepare them as normal. Some DMs allow you to use your negative energy touch to heal yourself. Paralyzation touch is an interesting tool, as well- and hilarious for RP usage. As for your phylactery, sonce your DM has ruled that you have to use some sort of spell to remove it rather than simply prying it off, I suggest some sort of object teleportation, then Nystul's Magic Aura, then Sequester. Or something similar.:D |
| IceFractal12-09-07, 03:28 PM | Actually, having the Phylactery on you while you're "alive" isn't necessarily a bad thing, you just don't want it falling into the wrong hands while you're regenerating. So get a Crafted Contingent spell on it to teleport it to a safe location if you're destroyed. |
