DM's First time ever being a player [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-19-06, 12:56 AM I have never played DnD as a player.. i have been DMing for about 7 years now... i finally found some one else that is half decent to DM in DnD so that i can take a break for a chance to try playing a player... i would just like your opinion on what i should play.. that would be interesting enough for an intermediatly seasoned DM.. but not too crazy as to take the spotlight from the rest of the party

05-19-06, 02:12 AM I am usually DM, and occasionally moonlight as a player. I find it best to play support classes. Cleric works nicely. My experience DMing means that I can voluntarily keep the power level appropriate, and use the character to support rather than dominate. I tend to prefer the Combat Medic prestige class, because it gives fun tactical options, like dropping sanctuary effects on combatants in the middle of melee.

But really, it depends what the rest of the group is playing. If they've got all the main character types covered, consider a bard: they don't excel at anythign in particular, but no matter what sort of action is going on, you can participate. You can fight melee, you can lend skills, you can participate socially, you can cast some arcane spells, and some spells that are traditionally divine. There's basically nothing you can't do at least a little bit of, so it means that you'll be "on camera" continually, but never front stage.

05-19-06, 11:14 PM I find that the best solution is to find a character that sounds fun. That means different things to different people though. Like, for me it means uberizing my chracters to the nth power. Just think of a kind of character you would like to play and go with it. If you really can't think of anything, I find that monks are a LOT of fun, at least when I play them. :D
