I'm currently a Psion6/Thrallherd6. I have an AC of 30 normally, 36 if I pop up inertial armor. I can get an extra 55 HP with Vigor, or 110 effectively if I use share pain. My DM got mad because I held off an assassin by myself with Touchsight and Telekinetic Maneuver. Now he's claiming that I'm way above the other players in terms of power level, and I don't know what I can do about it. Any advice?

That doesn't sound particularly overpowering at level 12.. What is the setup for the other PCs?

A Human Favored Soul/Entropomancer
A Human Rogue/Master Thrower
A Minotaur Barbarian.

I can't quote stats or ACs, but the minotaur and favored soul nearly died. I took a total of 10 points of damage.

~Monster Races are usually almost always underpowered compaired to pure level characters and the Entropic PrC is just a really bad class altogether unfortunetly. I love the idea of the class but it needs to be re-vamped.
~To me, psionics has always been a little over-the-edge compaired to almost anyone, but the Thrallherd PrC is very good along with Psions, so dont worry about it.

All your DM is doing is trying to beat a high AC? At level 12? Um, glancing at your class and PrC in my copy of EPH, he really should be going after your fort and reflex saves, not your AC. So, you're inability to be hit is more your DM's fault rather than your own.

You're level 12 and he's trying to kill the mage-type with hit point damage?

Let me put this another way.

I currently have a 9th-level illusionist. I should note that his AC is a whopping... 11. He's been hit TWICE since we started playing, thanks to his careful use of things like concealment, misdirection, cover, and defensive spells like Mirror Image and Invisibility. If he cared more about transmutation, he'd be flying as well.

Wizards avoid damage by simply not being there when the attack lands. Psions convince their bodies that they're less damaged then they actually are (through effects like Vigor) and manipulate pain empathically (Share Pain). It *would* balance out, if the wizard spells didn't negate the attack altogether (meaning not just the HP damage, but anything like poison, spell storing weapons, Improved Grab, and the like).

If he wants to take down your psion, he'd have used a grappler (forces Concentration checks to manifest powers), a Fortitude-based save-or-die spell, or effects based on countering your allies (Dominate the minotaur and tell him to bash you, for instance).

There's nothing with your character that suggests he's particularly strong (although I'm curious as to how you got a constant AC of 30 at that level...). As for the others, you have a MINOTAUR (HELLO level adjustment) and an entropomancer. No wonder you seem strong by comparison.

AC = 10 base + 4 armor bonus (mythril chain shirt) + 3 shield (+2 buckler) + 5 DEX bonus + 4 natural armor (ectoskin of the defender) + 3 deflection (ring of protection +3) + 1 insight (dusty-rose ioun stone) = 30 total.

Did you craft any of those yourself? It would make it cheaper because some of that would be expensive if not.

I think he was just annoyed that his rogue-y type couldn't really do anything to me. Against the werelord, I wouldn't have faired nearly as well. I'm really resistant to HP damage stuff, but save-or-die spells are still a problem. I know he has a Fatespinner PC that could kick my butt. I think it was just a matter of my character (buckets of HP) vs. a class that relies on HP damage.

Just for reference, you've been doing something wrong that violates the rules. Inertial Armor gives you an armor bonus, which doesn't stack with your chain shirt. So once you turn that on, you'd have an AC of 32, not 36. That right there might solve your problem.

Not really, he'd have an AC of 30. Unless he augmented Inertial Armor. If he fully agumented it, it would provide a +9 armor bonus at this point (4 base, +1 per 2 extra power points, and his ML is 11), which would raise the total AC to 35, not 36.

Wow. I can hit that AC (30) by around level seven. Assuming the DM allows you to buy whatever gear you need (which I personally don't. Though the guys I play (not DM) with do). Keep in mind though, by doing this you have almost no offensive punch (see: No magical weapons) and your attacks are probably going to be sucking pretty bad as well.

Base +10
+2 Full-Plate +10 - 4,000 gp
+2 Tower Shield +06 - 4,000 gp
Ring of Protection (+2) +02 - 8,000 gp
Amulet of Natural Armor (+1) +01 - 2,000 gp
Dexterity +01

TOTAL AC: 30
REMAINING GOLD: 1,000 gp

ON TOPIC:
If your DM is worried about you having an AC in the thirties (which seems a bit high to me, but oh well) he's going to have much bigger fish to fry once you start getting some of the even higher-tier spells.

Out of curiosity, does he throw any casters or manifesters at you guys or is it all melee/ranged attackers?

He must have built that assassin poorly. And I don't think AC 30 would be too tough. CR 11 Hill Giant Dire Wereboar has +29 to hit with it's greatclub in hybrid form.

CR 12 Purple worm has a +25 to bite and has poison.
ZypherX

I think he just overreacted to the situation. When something has +25 to hit, which many things do at these levels, I don't believe having a 30 AC is overpowering. And yes, I do give them access to my artificer for a reasonable commission.

i had a DM once, that we started out playing first level characters. i used standard starting gold found in the phb. I believe we were using the basic starter game(?)

b/c i was the only player (it was my brother, his wife, and myself as players, and then the DM) with any gaming experience, i made 4 characters. My brother played a bard (found out exactly how useful that was), my sister played a fighter, and I played two characters, a ranger and a paladin. So I brought with me to the game the 4 character sheet. We set out on the little mini-adventures.

to make a long story short, b/c of the monsters we were fighting, and the way I had constructed the characters (dodge is an excellent feat), the DM couldn't even touch the bard. my ranger had the lowest AC at 17 (with dodge), but i kept her in the back out of range, and the two tanks were beefed up to like 24. the only way he could hit was a nat 20, and even then he wouldn't crit.

the DM whined on that..

If your DM played his NPC's better then your 30AC would not matter. Honestly you cant be blamed for that. After all he played an assasin he could have casted heart ripper on you and with your low fort save he would have one shotted you. What else can I say?

So your character is great at staying alive, how is he at dealing damage or otherwise overcoming challenges? One often needs to choose between a better offense and a better defense. If you're practically impervious but also do minimal damage, that could easily be a balanced and fair character.

I am somewhat concerned about the DM's attitude. What was the goal of the assassin? This is D&D where the PCs are expected to win, which means surviving in most cases. Someone needed to have been able to hold off that assassin, how did the DM expect that encounter to play out?

Well, I can sympathize with the DM... My first campaign ever I had a dwarf rogue who became a duelist (and something else, i think) and took all sorts of feats to up his AC. If he was fighting defensively it was somewhere in the mid 50s by level 12.

That wouldn't have been such a problem... but there's the dwarven build, which gives bonuses vs spells, etc. So spells didn't work, attacks didn't work...

The only thing that would work was to force balance checks... but Grease is an annoying one-trick pony.

Sometimes you stumble upon a build that is a little better than the rest, and the DM has a hard time compensating for it. Save-or-die spells aren't a great option either, cuz the DMs goal shouldn't be to try to kill this psion at every corner...

Your DM's a dolt. Why go after AC and hit points? He should be throwing PP-eating monsters at you, catch you with traps, spells, etc, not sending assassins after you. Sneak-types rarely catch spellcaster/manifesters by surprise... unless they're sleeping, and then it'd be just cheap.

You're not hard to kill, he's just not using the right tools to create a challenge for your character.

Explain that your character is optimised for AC and hit points, but vulnerable to rays, level-drains, PP drains etc. You are well able to defend against a physical attack ... but that's about all.

[QUOTE=rice830;12251201]~Monster Races are usually almost always underpowered compaired to pure level characters /QUOTE]
Exceot the Minotaur is a VERY strong option - as a level 8 characrer they have good reflex saves, FULL BAB, 6d8 for HP and a Can Bonus, +5 Natural Armor, Large size big strength, never surprised. Lots of goodness. IN general you might be correct about LA, but monstroue humanoids are generally quite powerful with pretty low ECL adjustments for what they get.

I'm guessing your DM doesn't like using spellcasting or psionic enemies. Your range touch AC isis hittable and is a perfect way to get some damage on you if that was his goal.

Touch AC 19 (or 18 if insight bonus to AC doesn't count towards touch AC) vs. Level 10 Wiz/Psion (+5 BAB + 2 or higher dex) = decent chances of hitting you with a ray type spell.

If range touch is the problem, some basic AoE spells would do some damage. A LB, fireball, or spells that don't even require a hit roll such as enervation or the like.

The topic should be changed to "My DM is too lazy to come up with ways to hurt me or kill me."
Zoycitenega

04-30-07, 01:44 PM
Has your DM ever heard of touch attacks? Those could hit you with a 19. If you use feinting in combination, it could hit on a 14. Not that difficult.

In all seriousness, it's not that difficult to hit you at level 10. One of my retired characters(a fighter sorcerer) needed a 9. The DM probably should also give you more battles to day, which would eat up your power points faster and equal you out with the others.

I talked with the DM and he told me that the problem was that I was too far ahead in power from the other players. I've pretty much got all the players thinking that Psions are overpowered, and he says I'm not doing much to change their minds. I didn't mean to overshadow them, and I think I'm far from optimized (I only have a 17 base INT at level 12, plus I'm at -1 ML for thrallherd), but at the same time the DM twinks out his villains and I don't want to die.

I know against a caster I'm not so great, which is why I try to avoid confronting them myself if possible.

Oh, the other players also freaked out when I got split ray disintegrate at ML 11.

Oh, the other players also freaked out when I got split ray disintegrate at ML 11.First, you can't do split-ray disintegrate at ML 11 unless you have Overchannel, which deals you 3d8 damage every time you use it this way (note: Forces Concentration check to manifest the power in question, DC 16+damage dealt).

Second, you have an idea of what you're doing, which the others don't (the only one of them that could honestly be dishing out serious damage at this level is the rogue). The minotaur may be strong, but he's a melee type at level 12 (he can dish out big damage if circumstances favor him, but spellcasters can utterly own him at this point.) The cleric took entropomancer, and apparently has no idea how to make his character strong or else you would look like stroganoff by comparison. If they're just looking at damage, of course you'll seem stronger.

Third, the DM has been catering to your strengths. You are hard to kill with hit point damage and avoid spellcasters; he sends HP damage at you and lets you avoid spellcasters. (At level 12, wizards have access to Teleport and Scrying. Unless you're actively taking nondetection precautions, you can't avoid dealing with them.) You are not too strong if your DM is an uncreative putz (which is what people on this thread have been saying).

Finally, I highly suspect these problems will exist regardless of what character type you play. These are problems with the players and DM, reflected in their characters and choices. You have to deal with this out of character -- I'd suggest building a few sample characters of other classes and clearly showing what they're capable of, and how far ahead of your party these simple experiments are.

Poison, sickening, nausea, entanglement, touch attacks,.....there are dozens of ways to take AC out of the equation.

I once as a DM created a Knight with every feat that lead to ridiculous AC and hit points. The pc's cursed, debuffed and conditioned him into helplessness, then took turns with coup-de-grace.

And there's always things like a medusa monk with improved sunder. What AC? What hit points?
Khan the Destroyer

04-30-07, 04:11 PM
If I knew my player had a monster AC and a metric ton of hit points, I don't think I'd send a wily rogue-type after him, with his mediocre BAB and piddly damage.

On the flip side, if I knew my DM twinked out his villains, I wouldn't play a minotaur, a rogue, or an entropomancer.

You have group issues here.

If the DM constantly pits you guys in melee, then you will constantly overshadow the rest of the group with these tactics.

Further, it is very apparent with your tactics and build that you are familiar with optimization. The rest of your party... not so much. So, while the DM is essentially going easy on you and making you take the blame for doing well, you are also playing at a level beyond where your group is at.

Either the DM needs to hit you in other places (like your fortitude save, or with area effects, or with dispels), you need to tone your character down to stay level with your party (in this case, play a healer or something) or they need to step it up to keep up with you (perhaps make some suggestions that they might find interesting).

That minotaur can do well with battlfield control as a chain-wielding Warhulk. As a halfling master thrower, that rogue can do some sick stuff with boomerangs. And the cleric is already potentially strong, but if the DM actually grants him a Sphere, he'll be even better.

At the very least, this seems to be more of a meta-game issue. You guys are playing at different levels. Something has to give.

Have your thrall make items for the other PCs that bring them up to your power level.Seconded. If you can get the other PCs up to your level, the game will be better for everyone. Also, your DM needs to learn a bit of strategy... he's going after your strengths with an assassin, who ought to know well enough to go after an enemy's weaknesses. Go figure.

Incarnate for the Win! My group thinks that my base AC of 25 is high. I've let them know that I could easily hit 30s on some days if I decided that it was necessary. My next character will be a Swiftblade. I'm not sure if I want to focus on melee for him or not. I'll have a decent beginning AC of 23 for most battles, but that's not saying much. If played right, I won't need to worry about being hit.

hmmm...

here's a possible look at an elf wizard at level one.

Dex 20 (lucky rolls do happen), providing a +5 to AC
Mage Armor, providing a +4
Shield, providing a +4
Protection from..., will proper execution, this can give a "possible" +2 to AC.
now, let's say he has the Dodge feat and is fighting defensively. That's another +3.

And for the sake of argument, I'll take Obscuring Mist for the win.

Now, what we have here is a Wizard 1, with an AC of 26, possibly as high as 28, with concealment. This is level one. Sure, this wizard is most likely using a wand or scrolls if he's doing this on a regular basis, or maybe his initial spell book is padded for effectiveness.

Too many things can pad an AC. Get your DM to read some of these posts. A lot of what is said in this thread is gold: concentrate on attacks requiring a Save. Mind control against the minotaur. Heck, bribe the halfling with a sandwhich. After all, it is a a role-playing game. Maybe what he can hit you with the hardest won't even require referencing a rule book....

Except you can't cast that many spells at level 1, nor can you afford any wands

... but even after a short adventure or two, you may have enough gold for scrolls. Mage armor scrolls are 25 gp, and so are shield scrolls. A lot of DMs I know provide max starting funds. Plus, there are feats that increase this (characters of noble background, inheritances, and the like). FR has regional equipment as well, which can and often does include a padding to the coin purse.

Remember that I said possible. It's not going to always happen, but that can be said for anything in this hobby of ours. ;)

An AC of 30? At level 12? That's pretty high, don't you think? I'm not familiar with psionics, but at level 12, I don't usually see such a high AC. I have a level 18 Ranger with a 30 or 31 AC. But level 12? What's he got for armor?

I'm a level 3, now, rogue, and I have 21 AC. >_> I wouldn't say that was too high. Of course, I'm wearing +1 Mithra/il chain with +5 dex modifier...and a +1 natural armor.

Thank you. I was worried that sort of message might get lost in the shuffle of "Your DM isn't trying hard enough to KILL YOUR CHARACTER DEAD, what a doofus!" comments.

I have a Ftr20 that can pump himself to 60AC:

10+13(armor)+3(max Dex)+3(TwDefense)+5(NA)+5(Ring)+up to 20(ICE)+1(monk's belt)

+5 mithral plate mail (13)
Amulet of NA +5
Ring of Prot +5
Monk's Belt (+1)
TWF block
TWDefense
Imp. TW Defense (CW)
Greater TW Defence (CW)
Combat Expertise
Imp. Combat Experise (CW)
+4 dex mod (can only use +3)

Uses a longsword and shortsword (like it matters, with ICE, he's not going to hit the broad side of a barn.)

Not the most broken build, but more than enough to give the DM a run for his money. (it's for a joke campaign, however, he'll never see Epic)

Actually most of the "Your DM isn't trying hard enough to KILL YOUR CHARACTER DEAD, what a doofus!" that I see on this thread are not "Your DM isn't trying hard enough to KILL YOUR CHARACTER DEAD, what a doofus!"

Most of them are more like "Your DM isn't trying playing his NPC's and BBEG's as well as he could be or if he wanted to really kill your character he should be playing. And he's angry at you? What a doofus!"

Most of this thread is agreeing with the OP that his AC is just fine at 20+ for his level and that the real problem is not the player but the DM for acting childish.

Any advice?

This happened to me. I had an AC that was about 8 points higher than anyone else, damage reduction, fast healing, and saves through the roof. I also consistently hit things more often, and for more damage, than anyone else in the party.

The DM had a lot of house rules, that I learned, and he allowed all sorts of non core material. I took advantage of this stuff to make a character that I thought was a really cool character. The other players didn't spend nearly as much time as me building a character, and their PCs all sucked in combat compared to mine.

This made things tough on the DM. Anything that had even a chance of hurting my character, was strong enough to easily wipe out the entire rest of the party. Combat usually consisted of me doing all the fighting, and other players doing nothing, because they couldn't do anything useful to help.

It wasn't fun for the other players. It wasn't fun for the DM. And it wasn't fun for me, because I knew that the other players resented my superior character.

What did I do? I bit the bullet, scrapped my super cool character, and create a new character, who was much more of a sissy, to bring him in line with the other PCs. Now when we are in combat, everyone contributes.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but if the party isn't ballanced, it won't be fun. And the only way to get balance, is to tone down your character.

I noticed that I goofed, the monk's belt can't help if I'm wearing armor!

But still, The DM may be pulling out the wrong monsters, there are plenty that have insane Attack bonuses, but not much on the damage. Giants, without weapons they have somewhere in the neighborhood of 1d6+Str x 1.5. Painful, but not terribly deadly. Of course a giant with half a brain will rip up a nearby tree(club or greatclub) to beat you with it if it has to. You run them through some Barbarian levels and that attack's going to go through the roof.

um, were-eagle hybrid form?

What kind of LA is being placed on your 'lvl 2' monk to get lycanthropy?

+3 for the lycanthropy +1 for the eagle HD of 1d8. 2 monk lvls in addition to LA +4

It isn't fair for a DM trying to kill you to take offense at a character built well for defense. In this scenario the problem is your weak allies.

If a DM is simply trying to run a fun game with appropriate encounters I'd retire the character and introduce a new, weaker one. It would be a good reason to play a weaker class. You could also play a support character and optimize the hell out of it. No one will complain if you're making everyone else stronger.
