DM trying to kill us on perpose [Archive] - Wizards Community

I am currently playing a level three Wemic fighter, and my brother a level six Minotaur.his ECL is 10, and mine is 11..my DM, after telling us that we wouldn't survive the next campeign, is setting us up against a fighter5/rogue5/talon of Tiamat10 NPC named Sha(Chinese for murder and slaughter), who rides a mature red dragon! He didn't tell me this, because my brother at first was in on my death planing. now he told me that my DM said that if we survive him, not only is it impossible and that the d20 system is messed up if we live, he is putting us up against the most insane evil paladin that I'm pretty sure is at least over level 25. Previously i captured a small keep to use as our stronghold/branch of mercenary band we are part of, and it had a huge gem mine. so after is was ransacked by unknown enemies, we found 1,000,000 gold pieces in the mine itself. Me and my brother, knowing what we know, have formed a list of items that would allow us to survive, but i doubt my DM would let us have most of it. I'm thinking of wording it as "i'm going to take some of the money and go purchase some items"...because he normally skips over to another player and says "While he's doing his thing, what are you doing", meaning he wont ask about what i bought. please, someone, tell me what else i should do. all help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks All

Your DM sounds like a Steve.

Say to him "Steve, you're being a douchebag. Stop it. Stop it now." (It is important you call him Steve)

If he refuses or retaliates, hit him with a folding chair, repeat your request.

Do this until he cringes at the sight of a folding chair.

Your concern shouldn't be how to survive your DMs encounters... It should be how you can acquire a hammer with which you can shoot your DM in the face.

That DM doesnt sound like he knows what hes doing at all. DM's should never just try to kill his players, so he either has a inferiority complex or is compensating for somthing...
Anyway, I'd say to find a reason why said evil villains would be attacking you and avoid them. If Sha wants you dead because you having somth8ing, give it up and run!
That's not very good advice, if a DM wants you dead, then you're dead, you can't control "fate" or in this case a Dungeon Master who enjoys toying with friends that are eventually get mad. Good luck and be brave!

Maybe the DM's stupidness is also on display when he is a player. Then both ways could work.

Use a hammergun, and then hit him with a folding chair.

i like the chair idea, but he is my wrestling coach...and around 270 pounds...and as I am only 127 and 15...i doubt th chair aproach would work, though the Steve idea is great...and the hammer..humorous as it is...I'm dead serious to my problem, so please give me a reasonable suggestion in the future.

Technically he's not perposefully "trying" to kill us(only me:P), but he's sure stretching our characters pretty far.

Bah, you're just saying that 'cuz you don't have a hammergun.

Here, borrow mine.
Edit: ShadowDragon, you stole my friggin' hammergun! Give it back!

After you're done shooting the heck out of him, it might be a good idea to tell the DM exactly what you know. Then ask him what the purpose of killing the entire party is.

If he gives you a reasonable answer ("I need to start fresh," "I accidentally gave you too much power," "I want to give this campaign a feeling of dread to it, it improve performance"), then you can either accept that as a reasonable answer, or suggest an alternative way of solving the problem (Just retire the old PC's, rebuild them to suit the new power level, or tune down the bad guys so that they are, in fact, barely beatable.

If he gives you an unreasonable answer ("Not telling," "I like watching you suffer," "I hate you outside the game") then let loose with my hammergun again. You should probably (threaten to) leave the game at this point, assuming that you have easy access to another game nearby (For some reason, I doubt you will. People with this sort of problem have the strange coincidence of being in the only group within miles of your neighborhood).

If he gives a reasonable answer, as above work with with, as above. If he doesn't, Stop! Hammagun time! Actually, if it doesn't work, offer to DM, because you and the other player aren't having fun being slaughtered, but nicely! If he doesn't agree, or if you suspect he wont, give it a good run, but in the end, screw the characters and ask to DM after they die and are unwilling to be raised.

Over and out!

I'm the inventor of the chair treatment, and while it CAN be used on DMs, I recommend the hammergun for such a situation.

This is is not to say that a chairgun is out of the question, however.

Did it occur to you that this level twenty character might be at the END of the campaign? I know I personally like taunting players.

Also, it Is possible that you're not meant to kill him. Here's an idea. Take a look at your classes or items. When/if you face these creature, I would seriously considering running. Using all your resources to slow down the beast and flee.

Tell him your next character is going to be a kobold wizard, with a certain template. After a good dose of infinite damage to every creature on every plane of existance I'm sure he'll reconsider his method of approach to game. If not just start using the character optimization boards against him relentlessly, if he's going to ruin your fun you should pay him in kind.
Seriously though, it is better to simply ask him why he seeks to decimate the party, odds are this Sha fellow is just your new villian. I recommend running and going into caves that twist nicely. Once sufficiently lost in the underdark you should begin planning a counter offensive while checking you character sheet for any possible light sorces.
It is possible that your borther has merely misunerstood the situation, Sha could just be there to prove there is always a bigger fish.

I suggest you confront him. Tell the DM you know he plans to kill you in the next session, and ask him why he thinks your character needs to die. At the very least it will make it tough for him to look you in the eye and say he did not expect you to die when the time comes.

The first campaign I DMed was about 15 years ago. About 4 months into the campaign I realized I had given out WAY to many powerful magic items, and my group at level 10-ish was powerful enough to take down every NPC in my campaign. I decided I needed to kill them off and start fresh, this time giving less gear during adventures.
As we started the session I backed out of killing them because I realized I was about to punish them for my mistakes. I talked to the players about where they wanted the players to go from here, and explained to them how I thought they had become over-powered. After a long discussion they decided to retire their characters, and I made each of them into important NPCs.
The point is this..........I was a bad DM, anytime a DM sets a senario that cannot be won or fled he/she is a bad DM. There is never a legitamate reason to intentionally kill PCs, however there are times good DMs allow PCs to die, but only because the players made a series of bad decisions.
Matthew77

he is putting us up against

This is your problem right here.

The DM does not "put you up against" anything.

The DM creates a world. The players decide what they want to do within that world. The DM then applies the consequences of those actions.

If the actions of a level 10 party has attracted the wrath of a level 20 cleric of Tiamat, (possibly he wants a chunk of that million GP in gems you are too weak to defend) then you need to either flee (abandoning the gold), surrender (giving him the gold) or find allies (donate a large chunk of the gold to a temple of Bahamut).

Hmp.

This is like convincing someone in a wheel chair to walk. If they can they will, if the can't they won't ... they don't want to they won't.

I would recommend talking to him about it.

But you want INGAME solutions ...

- wish spell
- miracle spell
- teleport (teleport a bulette into his stomach)
- polymorph (polymorph him into pot roast, and eat him)
- illusion spells
- anti magic aura, mind blank, traps
- divine intervention

Hehe. Well that Ken may have been an absolutely horrid DM, and may have had halitosis, but he was a nice guy. I liked him, despite his weird fanboyish fetish with dragons. I wouldn't have become friends with him if he didn't have other redeeming traits.

In fact, if it weren't for that guy and Galahad the Pure, I never would have been introduced to D&D in the first place, and I love the game way to much to ever take back my decision to give it a chance and play it.

"DM trying to kill us on perpose"

This is rather funny :D If a DM wants to kill a character, then he can allways kill it. He doesn't need to try, since he's handeling the encounters, handling the enemy attack rolls, saving throws, ...

So I guess he isn't only a bad DM because he wants to kill his players, he's also a bad DM because he needs to try it and isn't sure he'll succeed.

When I'm DM and I don't like one character, then I talk to the player who plays it. If the reason why I don't like it is clear (like a greedy halfling who does nothing besides robbing other players) then I'll try to convince the player to change. If it's my mistake (like allowing a player to play a race which is hard to handle in the campaign) then I tell the player I made a mistake that needs to be changed.

If I was a player in that campaign, I would look for an other DM I guess ;-)
Roivas

01-04-07, 02:48 AM
If I were running a game and really wanted a player dead I'd smack them with the seagull of exp. drain, giving them negative levels equal to their current level +81. Or if they are immune to negative energy and I still want them dead they simply choke on a pretzel, even if they are undead this still kills them somehow.
To be honest if your GM is really trying to kill you he either doesn't know what he is doing, or you have misunderstood what he is really doing.

Because a cat will often leave you alone if you don't **** it off, but aggressive dogs will go out of their way to bark at you and bite you if they don't like the way you look.

Which is why I'm a cat person (Not really... I'm a cat person but not exclusively because of this reason)

To OP:

First off, if your DM is trying to kill you and your brother you should call the local authorities immediately. :P

Now that I got that out of the way...

Normally, I would say "Well of course your DM is trying to kill your characters! He controls all the bad guys!" But this guy is either messing with you (or your brother) for no particular reason. (Unless we're missing something here.)

I have run a sustained campaign for a long time (see my public profile), and I'm always on the lookout for new and interesting ways to kill the characters (but never the players). But I also ensure the characters have a reasonable chance of success. I seldom kill characters, but my new ideas keep the players on their toes.

The idea of a person calling themselves a DM, then pitting a level 3 character against a level 25 character staggers the imagination. It is insipid in it's obvious-ness which is compounded by this DM telling your brother about it beforehand!

This situation begs further questioning:

1. How old is this DM?

2. Is he retarded? :looloo:

3. Did you actually say that you are worse than him as a DM? Because that doesn't seem possible.

4. Are you leaving something out?

5. Have you possibly misunderstood what your brother is telling you?

6. Has your brother possibly misunderstood what the DM told him?

...

Okay, now that I got those questions off my chest I'm going to tell you what I would do in your situation. If push comes to shove and your 3rd level Wemic finds itself facing down a 25th level paladin...

Put away your stuff and leave the room.

If the DM asks what you're doing...

Simply tell him that since he's made certain that your character will die, that it's obvious to you that he no longer wants to play D&D. So you're accomodating his wishes and packing up until he decides he's interested in something other than character homocide.

What I really don't understand is why the DM would tell your brother all of this beforehand. This makes me think that your brother has become an unwitting pawn of the DM, who is just trying to mess with your head.

While messing with your head isn't as bad as the other situation, it's still dirty pool (or D&D) in my mind...

While I thoroughly enjoy the joke, I have to say anyone who states that they have never in spoken or written word referred to their character/party as 'I, we, us, etc' is either a liar or a lousy role player.

OP, if your DM is maliciously trying to kill off your party for no good reason;

Find. another. DM.

However, I suspect it may be more of a balance issue. Your ECL 10/11 party of two(?) has amassed a bankroll of proportions my ECL 16 party of 7 would LOVE to get their hands on. If that is the case he is picking a VERY poor way to go about it and you may want to consider my previously mentioned solution anyway.

Well, it looks like the usual options have shown up. The 'shoot the DM in the face', the 'vote with feet' option and the 'sit down and talk' option.

I predict that the rest of the thread will alternate between those options and debating whether a bad DM is called 'Ken' or 'Chad'.

Excepting the next post or so, which will invariably be something just to contradict what I just said. (Hah! Pre-emptive strike!)
mato_hibiki

01-05-07, 04:38 AM
I'm going with the 'shoot the DM in the face' option. Sounds like fun to me.

Also, is it too late for a third option? The name for a bad DM should be 'Rick' because it rhymes with di- Whaddya mean I can say that? Ok fine, phallus. Happy?

I got sick of my former DM killing off the part whenever he 'ran out of ideas'. I opted to instead find ways of becoming unkillable.

Sadly, I picked 'unkillable by tenacity', bad choice. After the next five sessions, he needed the equivalent of a tactical nuke to kill me off. I just plain refused to die. I also refused to cheat, so don't even go there.

I also liked to be a human shield for the rest of the party. I wish I had known about the char ops board back then, I just used straight fighter, and later, rogue.

So, unless you're incredibly lucky, ALL THE TIME, like I am... Well, lock and load baby.

It's hammer gun time!
