DM unwilling to change PC's alignment [Archive] - Wizards Community

Well, this requires some introduction...

I'm playing a campaign in the DM's homebrew world, and although I'm enjoying the game immensely, and the campaign is very interesting and fun, there's something that keeps me slightly annoyed.
My character is a chaotic neutral sorcerer. He's a dark elf, but not a drow... in this world, dark elves are less powerful than drow, and not innately evil... they are staunch enemies of evil, who is represented in this world by a huge legion of monsters called The Host. When I created the character, I wanted him to be chaotic neutral, since all he wanted was to fight the Host, not for the good of the free people, just for hatred and revenge... Not caring too much for "collateral damage" and such... I told the DM that I wanted my character to grow and evolve during the campaign towards Chaotic Good, learning during his adventures that the protection of innocent lives is more important than merely fighting the objects of your hate... I believe in actions more than in words, so I've been playing him more and more as Chaotic Good with time, so he's definitely Chaotic Neutral no more...

Well, now the party is at 6 level, almost leveling up to 7, and as so far the DM has ignored my roleplaying efforts and has not made even one comment about changing my alignment... What bothers me is that he sometimes threatens some other players to changing their alignments to evil... so, this DM believes in a negative change but not in a positive one? Or perhaps he views alignment as a reign over character's actions, a tool for him to punish or limit pc's actions?

Perhaps this particular DM's views on alignment have something to do with it... for example, he insists that charming people is evil! Not charming people for stupid or capricious motives, but like charming prisoners (instead of brutally torturing them to extract information) or for the sake of crucial missions or quests in behalf of an entire city... If charm person or suggestion is evil, all the jedi in star wars would be evil!!!!! He also insist on some extreme views on alignment... I have come to think that in his mind, good=lawful good... paladinesque lawful good at that!

Well, that's the matter... Overall, the guy's a nice DM, reasonable and fair, and the campaign is well designed and fun, but this alignment matter is completely screwing my character's development, not as a spellcasting machine, but as a well-portrayed, multi-dimensional character...

Have you tried talking to the DM about changing your allignment and what else he may want from you to accomplish that?

Some DM's just don't think about moving a player to good, but because of the innate hatred of characters being evil that is more often in their mind. Talk to him, maybe he hasn't thought about changing you to good because it wouldn't make a big difference in the game to him. Maybe he's more open to it than you think.

I explained it to him at the beginning of the campaign, and I bring the point every now and then, just to be sure he remembers it, but he never does anything about it...
Perhaps it's unimportant to him, and he pays more attention to other aspects of the campaign... I mean, if I'm already playing my character as good, why has he to worry about what it says in my character sheet... let's move to the action...

maybe he's hard headed. Sit him down and say.

"I know it makes very little impact on the game play but for roleplaying reasons I very much would like for my character at some point over this campaign to become chaotic good instead of chaotic neutral. What do I need to do to accomplish this as it's very important to me and my character development. Have I done enough to get there already, if so could it change soon, if not, what do you suggest my character do?"

This will allow him to either say, no it's not going to change or force him to think about the issue. It sounds to me like you told him at the beginning of the campaign and are just hinting at it now. Well don't act like my fiance does to me, don't expect him to pick up the hints and read your mind. Just go be straight up with him. Worse thing that happens is you'll find out he has no intent on changing it.

That's exactly what my wife does to me too... must be a class feature :D :D :D

No, i'm not hinting at it, it's just that I don't like to press the issue... I would really prefer that it came up from my role-playing efforts... But I guess you're right, Aladdar, the best thing I can do is talk to him and be straight about it... let's see what he thinks about it...

If he won't even address the issue of alignment with you, then you'll have to take matters into your own hands. That thing you use to write stuff down on your character sheet actually has two functions. The writing (which I'm sure you're familiar with), and the removal of writing (you have to use the other end for that). Just switch it over on your character sheet. If the DM starts to winge about it, at least you finally have his attention.
