So I have A DM he isn't always a bad DM ussually he's quite cool. My friend Wants to play a snake like humanoid that we both just decided to call snake folk. we both built the race ussing books and such making it in everyway right but my friends just wasn't as good as mine so we were going to use mine after fighting with my DM about the base rase he gose home and decides that he can make his own which ends up sucking even more than ares and says it's his way or the high way. what do I do to get through to this guy? any comments, suggestions?

IMO custom races are the province of the DM. He is the one that has to give them a place in the world and balance their abilities with the other races in his gameworld.

I think it is entirely fair for him to write up the race.

Although it can be more fun if he gets input (of course if you want something that doesn't fit in his world you are out of luck).

CKinda sounds like what was done. You gave input for a new race. Talked about it with the DM and the DM decided it would be cool and made the race.

sounds like your dm is a bit insulted that you didn't consult him before creating a new player race. this is ok, but also he should be more understanding. i think that he maybe feels threatened that he may lokse control, which is understandable considering it sounds like you jsut sprung the idea on him.

he is trying to get that sense of control back by giving you his alternative...what i would suggest is you try working with him instead of on your own 'against' him

or just start dming yourself

the thing is I have consulted the Dm numorous times and he was all for it untill he decided that he wanted to make one in his own image I do understand that it is the DMs world and his rules go but in my opinion the Dm should encourage the players to be more creative especially when he was there the whole way through the creation of the class.

good to hear!! the player-dm ratio is woefully high

if the guy wanted to make his own after you gave him the idea, thats fine, he's the dm and maybe he's just trying to incorporate that idea into his campaign world...he may just think that your snake people don't fit into his world, and tried to compromise by making his own version for you

Considering the DM has to take every single aspect of the game into account, I believe they are more qualified to modify or invent races, classes, items, and the like than players are.

Since you and your DM apparently had different opinions about what "snake folk" should be like, there is probably something you don't know about the campaign and it's style that it could somehow effect. More often than not, these situations are accidental, but they can quickly become very complicated and troublesome as the DM begins to try and recalculate for situations he really never saw comming in any way shape or form. Players begin getting suspcious and accuse the DM of flubbing rolls, railroading, playing favorites, and the DM gets insulted and begins flaunting his authority.

Sorry.

It's the DM's job to decide what is or is not balanced and allowable for his campaign.

Them's the breaks. You want your snake folk in a game, DM that game yourself.

A word to the wise: you say he took this home and studied it, then redid it to fit. Sounds to me like he knows what he's doing. Before you insist on using it anywhere, ask yourself: am I insisting just because it's what I want? Am I too close to my creation to realize how out-of-control broken it is?

I had a few such screw ups in my own early DMing days, in the long ago.

thats kool that you brought that up cause I asked myself that not even a bit ago although at first it was somewhat like that it's more twards the aspect that He limits his players to no creativity :)

Ok so, now you are DMing, adn 2 players get togther and work on this new Cat race idea they have without ever een talking to you about it. They come up with stats and show it to you, and you think it is either way over powered or not the right flavor. So what do you do? Seems to me the most logic idea would be to come up with your own idea for a cat race and present it to the players. What if they don't like it? Would you say ok well I guess I was wrong we'll use yours then?

Your DM seemed to do the correct thing, and you guys gave him crap because it "sucked" seems to me he is better off without you.

You should tell your DM that he is wrong and that next time a player approaches him with a race they invented and made up on their own he should not take it home and re-design it.

He should laugh in their face and hand them a player's handbook and say "If your snake-folk is in here you can play it."
Tell him that he's a fool for even taking the player designed race home and considering it. Tell him he could have avoided all the player's nonsense by just telling his group that he is only allowing races found in the player's handbook...What's next, is he going to start letting them pull prestige classes, spells and feats out of these ridiculous splat books? Now that would be really silly.

Actually there already are snake folk in the game. The Yaun Ti.

As for your DM not letting you play the race as you created it, well as it has already been said, it's his game, his call. Maybe he thought yours was broken. I would be very surprised and suspicious of any DM who let a character play a first draft race creation without doing any editing.
